this is just a reminder of how much money companies do make selling products to pet owners and therefore I feel there should be no valid reason that they can not afford to do better QC testing and more.... Angry

Yikes, 5cat - that post you quoted says another pet food has the same problem!  Now we need to know what that pet food is!

I can think of a few that have had recent complaints, but if all that is true, would be great to know exactly which one for the safety of our pets.  It's getting harder & harder to protect our pets when feeding commercial food, isn't it.

Edited - I just read that post and the person is in Australia.  It sounds like they have had awful problems with their cats on Nutro over there.  Very sad.  I wonder if they get the same lots of food from the same mfr facilities that we have here?

The person from Australia posted on that blog last year - her vet said the cats' symptoms were consistant with salinomycin induced polyneuropathy that killed cats in the Netherlands in the 1990's.  Salinomycin is one of those ionophores in chicken feed.  (not saying this is what is going on here now, just interesting recall and toxin info from another country):

This is an interesting synopsis of everything wrong with the PFI by a Harvard Law student, pre 07 recall.  The history section and different players are good background info:

http://leda.law.harvard.edu/leda/data/784/Patrick06.html

"The industry managed to sow the seeds of problematic regulation during the height of its power in the 1970s. During the pet food boom, the industry and the U.S. government were “especially close.”[17] The chairman of Ralston Purina’s board of directors, Earl L. Butz, effectively swapped jobs with the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Clifford Morris Hardin.[18] Meanwhile, the national guidelines for pet nutrition originated with Ralston Purina’s own research department.[19] No one seemed to mind the industry’s self-regulation."

Petslave,

Yes, I wish that poster from Australia had asked the rep more questions.

Don't know if we have any friends from "down under" here.  Maybe they could help us out.

Here're some current Nutro comments from Dogster.  Scroll down about half way - past the Consumer Affairs article repost.

There are hundreds of similar posts all over the www.

Here's a good article on manufacturing premixes:

http://www.engormix.com/manufacturing_a_quality_premix_e_articles_669_BAL.htm

Lots of opportunities for something to go wrong.  I wonder what happens to the "bad" batches.

And when the stuff gets to the pet food company, they have to pay attention to how much of it they dump in the hopper.

This Nutro business, and the Wellness buyout news has me so messed up!

Last night, I opened up a bottle to take my BP medicine, and popped kitties' worm pill in my mouth.

I found this document which talks about the micronutrients, supplements & the process - and the guy is talking to "friendly" faces:

http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/dailys/03/Nov03/111203/03n-0312-tr00001-vol2.pdf.DOC

"The second part of that process is to heat that product up again to a lower temperature where only the zinc is volatilized, so one of the checks that we have in place on inbound product is to make sure that the zinc concentration is correct because that's what our customer formulates to.  That's what he's after.  We want to make sure that he gets what he's after.
But secondly, you have to take a look at the process and the known hazards and in this case lead, cadmium and arsenic are three elements that we analyze on the inbound product and monitor on a close basis because we know that a failure in his process could result in product that's detrimental."

Offy,

That was a very friendly crowd.  We pet owners need to have a meeting like that.

PS   No, thank goodness.  I didn't swallow it.  It felt much larger than my tiny little BP pill and it tasted odd, too.

But I swallowed a couple of times.   Shocked  Usually I just taste.  Wink

The only pet medication I've tasted is Flagyl.  YUCK.  That is the most horrible, nauseating medicine.  No wonder it is so hard to pill.

That is a good article, Offy.  It points out the points in processes in the industry from start to finish where problems can come in.  Using coal trucks to transport materials, using formaldehyde to treat finished feed product to kill salmonella, trucks not being cleaned out after shipping beef meal thus upping the chance of transferring BSE material into cattle feed.  A comment about the auger in the premix production being stuck for hours, how very toxic selenium is, and how it needs to be mixed very very well to avoid hot spots.  They mention that water in the processes is the big transporter of salmonella.  Metal does seem to be a big problem in all phases.

And this conference was in 03.  So much for safey procedures.

You guys are so funny. It's OK to take a worm pill or whatever. I did it too, and My vet said it sure won't hurt anything.
I had such a bad headache one day, i took this very large pill. I thought at the time it was huge, but My head hurt so bad, i just cut it in half and took both parts. I found out later it was meds. for My horse. Now wonder it was so big. It did get rid of the headache though.
I also taste all My cats and dogs meds. and flagel is the worst.
