Interesting link, yl.  Another poison my cats were eating.   Angry

Phantom apparently has a taste for poison.  She liked those d**n Nutro pouches too.  There isn't much wet food that she will eat.

great find, yl. Catbird, I hope your toxic basement has this stuff contained!

I WOULD RE-PUT OUT AN URGENT REQUEST FOR IAMS WET CAT FOOD, ACTIVE MATURITY FISH AND RICE, OR CHICKEN AND RICE
IN 3 OR 5.5 OUNCE CANS. Barring the ability to get a sample of that, looking for just plain adult maintenance IAMS CANNED CAT FOOD, 3 or 5.5 OUNCE CANS SOLD AT KROGER GROCERY STORES IN THE FALL OF 2006 UP TO MARCH OF 2007. THIS WAS THE "OMG I'M OUT OF CAT FOOD" BACKSTOP for my 3 cats. The cans I'm looking for were IAMS' orange and then kind of a sky blue on the label. The flavor was something like "Oceanfish." This was adult maintenance food, not for seniors.

In view of catbird's and my memories of the silent disappearance of a lot of Iams cat food products in the fall of 2006, this could be
important. I know it was fall 2006 because I had been special ordering cases of Active Maturity Fish and Rice from PetSmart. Then
walked in one day and was told Iams had stopped making the fish variety, and then a short time later the Active Maturity Chicken and Rice
became hard to get. So please check your sample closets, wearing gloves and gas masks, and let me know if you have samples.

3Cat, sorry, my poison pet food stash doesnt have any Iams in it.  Do you know if these cans have 2 or 3 year expiration dates?  In other words, would any still be on shelves right now with expiration dates of fall 2009 or spring 2010?  If so, I would be happy to go see what I can find where I live....

All sealed in large metal canisters with tight-fitting lids, on a high shelf that the cats can't get to.  Wink  Marked "BAD CAT FOOD--don't use!"  But I don't have any Iams cans.  (Have some dry Iams, though, but not in its original bag, and it's mixed with another kind.)

If the Iams varieties that "went missing" are still on the shelves, where would they most likely be?  Convenience stores or small groceries, maybe, that don't have a big turnover in cat food?  As I recall, even Walgreen's sold Iams.

Does anyone else remember a "supply problem" with Wellness cans, I think in late 2005 or early 2006?  I remember all the pet food stores around here having very little of it, some with signs apologizing for the short supply.  Although Wellness was never recalled, I started wondering about that when the big recalls happened.  (I still use Welllness and have not had problems.)

well I found these two today..--I don't know whether to call the Dept of Ag as this is really old food (at least one is for surely expired) that I think should be off the shelf....however here's what I found..

Science Diet canned 5.8 oz dog food-Senior-savory chicken entree best by 09 2006.

and

IAM'S canned 3oz cat food-Iams weight control-Chicken and rice formula -there is no best by written just the date 070307 on the top bottom of the can so I don't know if that is best by or the manufacture date?
edited to add...
according to the IAM's website that date is best by...so i am able to buy some real old food here in good ole RI...think I'll be making another trip later----this is not my usual pet food store...

oh I also bought a Merrick treat "Thanksgiving day dinner"  with an expiration of  31 JUL 05 but had bought it for Lucy so I did not see that til I got home....and the last time I bought Puppy plate there I had told the cashier that the last 5 lb bag had expired in Feb of 08 and they said thanks--but today it was back on the shelf and the only one.............so I want to call somebody but want to make sure I don't need more expired food for testing. Good luck, Don. Would give my eye teeth for a sample can of Iams Active Maturity Fish and Rice from
late 2006. I'm rooting for you on Thursday, Don.

http://itchmoforums.com/help-with-my-sick-pet/iams-active-maturity-cat-food-mystery-why-did-it-disappear-t987.0.html

The good news is I do have a sample, one 5.5 ounce can of the Science Diet savory chicken entree senior 7+ Cooked in Savory Juices.
The other good news is, thanks to two very kind posters here, I believe I have samples of the Nutro Natural Choices located; thank you
so much, you two.

The real quesion mark is still the Iams canned wet cat food samples, but I am hearing from a lot of you. The closest to the fish
variety I can come is what I'm looking for; then active maturity chicken and rice or as close as I can come. Help if you can.

It's answers I've never gotten or any of us I'm hoping would pop out of tests. Maybe, maybe not; but I'd sure like to try with
your help.

well, I am off to the same store as yesterday to see what else i can find....and when I get back I am going to call somebody....to sell food a couple weeks or months  outdated is an oversight....to sell it 3 years past best by date is not! Angry

After talking to my Dept of Ag and at their suggestion...I am now calling the pet food co's to let them know and the Merrick customer service rep  informed me that the sausage was not made before last year so they think it might be a printing error...they said it was 2007 when they started making them so I did want to correct that date....they were glad to know about the Puppy Plate however...
I don't want to post incorrect info without correcting! (Wish all the PFC's felt the same) Sad

Iwonder what adverse reactions occur when ca mixes with any of these or other chemicals? Lead, creosote, fuel oil, kerosene, citranella or carbolic acid?

yl, any of those chemicals plus the chromium you pointed out earlier can't possibly be good things with
the combo of cyanuric acid, the great facilitator, that we now have evidence of at least Nutro adding
prior to the recalls imho.

Found this FDA guidance for raw food makers:

http://www.fda.gov/cvm/guidance/Guide122.doc

"FDA does not believe raw meat foods for animals are consistent with the goal of protecting the public from significant health risks, particularly when such products are brought into the home and/or used to feed domestic pets."

With prices going up accross the board, I expect we will be seeing a lot more reformulations in petfood ingredients... changes will include generic protein sources like "fish meal" or "poultry meal" etc.  Watch out also for new or novel but cheap ingredients to be included in many more pet foods, some of which will be devoid of any nutritional value but given a positive spin by the PFC.  An example is the inclusion of beet pulp in pet foods as a source of fermentable fiber.  Beet pulp is a by-product of the process of extracting sugar from sugar beets.  IAMS uses this cheap fiber in many of their formulations and in order to justify it, they sponsored a "study" showing the benefits of beet pulp in the diet, without adddressing some of the potential problems in its use (bloat, plugging of the intestinal villus, etc.).  A better, safer and more nutritious fiber is that of the squash/pumpkin family - but of course, this is more expensive.
