"The pain medication is the fifth contaminant found in pet foods during the past 2 1/2 months and can be toxic or lethal to pets, especially cats. It is not known if any animals became sick with acetaminophen poisoning, or died from it."  (From the article by Karen Roebuck back in June.)

Hmmmmmmm, I wonder......... Huh

Here're a couple of articles from Klondike:

New UC Davis Study of Melamine and Cyanuric Acid Toxicity in Cats

http://www.news.ucdavis.edu/search/news_detail.lasso?id=8414

http://jvdi.org/cgi/content/abstract/19/6/616

Sounds like "someone" wants to determine the minimum allowable levels.  Wonder who funded the study?

Some info WRT fundraising at UC Davis with help from PF companies
(reposted due to lost in crash)
Red highlights are mine

"Committee Reports: (Pet Food Committee): April passed the chair to Brian Leonard to discuss the Pet Food Committee. The class representatives are now responsible for the pet food committee and collecting money at the food distribution sales. She will give cash boxes to the representatives and will be at the next few pickups to help with selling the pet food. The change has been made so that the work of selling the extra pet food will be distributed more evenly. April has been communicating with someone at the VMTH to work with them on getting the rule of selling pet food on campus changed for residents and staff of the VMTH. April welcomed the pet food representatives (Maureen Hurson-Iams and Bridget O’Connor-Hills) to the SCAVMA meeting and thanked them for coming to the meeting.

Brian Veltri e-mailed some questions to the food representatives about their companies feelings on selling pet food and its distribution. Brian said that as the Purina representative, Purina gives the food to the students and feels that the students can make decisions on what to do with the food. Purina will not dock SCAVMA if more money is made and they support selling the food to other people if it can be done. Purina wants to help SCAVMA make more money for the school if it can legally through the pet food sales.

Maureen mentioned that Iams donates over $1million to UC Davis each year, and is ok with SCAVMA selling the food, but cannot give more food to sell than they already give us.

Bridie, representing Hill’s, said she spoke with Barry Watson and he strongly encourages us to sell the extra food and would like to promote selling the food.

April mentioned that the best idea to make more money for SCAVMA with out fundraising from the students would be to sell the extra food to residents and staff of the VMTH. This would allow SCAMVA to increase funding for programs that can be given back to the students. Currently each company will have the profit made from each food company accounted for. Each company will pay $130 per year for the next 5 years out of the profit from food sales to pay for the shed that was built for storing of the extra food. For Hills, SCAVMA will pay $75 per month for 9 months to the clubs that assist with food pickup out of the Hills food sales. April feels this is a good use of the food sales money because the profit will go back to the students and clubs and directly.

SCAVMA owes Screaming Squegee $437 for the white coat ceremony and that leaves about $637 for the white coat ceremony next year. Last year Iams generated about $2100, and Iams wants the money to go to their Human Animal Bond Scholarship, which is traditionally $500. Iams usually donates $600 for the student directory and

Iams will receive advertising in the Directory for their donation. There was some discussion about the extra money from Iams to sponsor another scholarship or possibly the speaker committee which will impact more students that one scholarship. Jason Kidd mentioned that Purina may be soon sponsoring the Waggie newsletter and has previously sponsored the mentor lunch. Jason met with the Purina representative and gave her the budget for the Waggie publishing, filled out an application for funding, and will hopefully hear from Purina soon about funding for the newsletter. The funding will hopefully not come out of the Purina pet food sales.

The chair was handed back to April after discussion of the pet food sales.

And UC Davis can't find any toxins/contaminants in pet foods?  Gee, after reading the last post, I sure can't imagine why.......

You don't suppose there's any correlation between the money Davis gets from the pet food companies & the "clean" tests that cover their a$$, do you?

Naw.......that would be unethical & we know these people are all honest & would never try to mislead those consumers that have been loyal to them for eons.

Excuse me while I go bang my head against the wall....... Undecided

We should have warned people early on? WTF is wrong with that picture? Now they are paying the price with lost sales and the shareholders asking for heads to roll. Bad for business? YOU bet it is - see how many Itchmoer's and others who read this forum are not buying pet food anymore unless they absolutely have no other choice. And hopefully there will be something for those people too to feed their beloved fur babies. May all of you heartless let the pets die people all go out of business!

Dr. Peter M. Sandman is a risk communications expert who was commenting on what the FDA should have said in order to improve their communication during the recalls.

Scroll down a little past the middle of the link, to find the comment re: Melamine risk communication: acknowledgment and anticipatory guidance

TOXIN FOUND IN HUMANS YEARS AFTER FEED MIX-UP

By RICHARD SEVERO
Published: April 16, 1982

"Ninety-seven percent of the residents of Michigan were estimated to have retained residual levels of the toxic chemical PBB in their bodies five years after some livestock feed was inadvertently contaminated with it in 1973, a long study by scientists from the Environmental Sciences Laboratory of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine has concluded."

Don,

I wonder if it might also be possible to speculate that the presence of some cyanuric acid in the rendered protein might help raise a protein assay due to its nitrogen content and thus be helpful to sales, assuming that such tests are done prior to rendering and before other companies buy such protein? So, do other companies need to be testing their rendered protein and "animal fat" ingredient purchases for melamine and cyanuric acid, residual from the ingredients of rendering and by-products?

Of course, not that MY pet food will ever again contain such ingredients, because I won't be buying those that contain such ingredients...

hopefully you'll rid your food of those *additives* also  Wink remember, this crap is originally human food. pet food is just the scraps and waste of human food.  *puke*   my pets weren't eating pet food when this recall happened (except my youngest cat for nighttime snacks), but i sure was! and this is from a person who used very little processed food. OY!

Much as all of us would like to beleive 100% that the commercial petfood we buy is 100% safe and does not contain any contaminants, recent tragic events have shown ALL of us that there is no such guarantee and perhaps never will be.
