JanC I tried one bag of Canidae , it also had white crap all over and through it. I put it out on trash burning spot and set it on fire . It burned for over 4 hours . When I called Canidae they told me the white stuff was from their adding the vitamins after the food was baked.

I have several varieties of Natura products being tested. The results are not back yet.I will continue to test them until I find what ingredients made my pets ill.

I think when anyone open a pet  food product that looks unsafe if you can not afford to have it tested or get your State Ag & MKts to or state health dept. return it to the dealer if these people have to refund enough money maybe this will get a little of the message across.  Check with universitys and colleges in your area. I am glad to see these law suits being filed I do not care who makes money off the suits as long as it gets these companies much needed  negative public exposure.

We wonder what made our pets sick look at the selection we can choose from melamine, chemicals used in rendering plants, vitamin premixes , chemicals used in applying vitamins , GMO'sand chemicals used in GMO's , moldy grains, chemicals to keep rodents out of grains and the list grows and grows.

yl it burned for over 4 hours? What's in there - petroleum oil? Motor oil? The oil from the rancid 55 gallon drums from all the restaurants and fast food places that they spray on the dry kibble to get the animals to eat it? FOUR HOURS? Un-frigging believable!

I'm thinking about getting a pellet stove and burning pet food . Cheap way to heat.

I totally don't trust any processed food to be healthy. But I still eat potato chips dangit.
I don't know what to feed my pets so I've been feeding Wellness. Knock on wood.

I'm not a huge fan of lawsuits, either.

But if that's what it takes to hold the PET FOOD INDUSTRY accountable, then, so be it.

We had several bags of cat food we burned recently, including:

Purina Cat Chow Indoor
Nutro Natural Choice
Natural Balance Indoor
Diamond Maintenance

All burned/smoldered for hours until we finally put it out and buried the charred remnants. I don't know what's in the stuff, but I couldn't believe how long it burned.

Another thing I've done is put various foods in water to see if the food dissolves, or whatever. Hill's and Purina foods sit at the bottom of the water and simply expand as they soak over a period of time. Hill's especially will sit at a bloated state for days. KumpiKat and Wellness Indoor (Wellness especially) on the other hand seemed to dissolve rather quickly and simply left a bit of film on the top and bottom of the water. I would be willing to bet this all has something to do with the chemical preservatives used in some foods, that aren't in others. But the test certainly isn't scientific, so make of it what you will.

Another thing I noticed about the commercial canned cat food:  When there's some of the canned food left on a plate and it gets dried up, it's really hard to rinse off with hot water before I put the dish into the dishwasher.  I had to rinse and rinse and sometimes scrape it off with a spoon.  With the raw food I'm feeding, the dried food rinses off the plate right away, just a little warm water and no scraping.  And with the Gerbers jarred baby food I fed occassionally, that crap is the toughest to get off!  I can rinse it under hot water and scrape with a spoon and it takes the longest to get off.  So I'm wondering what's in the commercial foods that make it stick like glue when it dries up, as opposed to the raw food that rinses right off.  Then I wonder what it's doing to their tummies for digestion if hot water doesn't dissolve it quickly.

Nabiya,
I know what you mean about canned food and Gerbers baby food sticking to dishes. However, the Wellness canned that we've been using is exactly the opposite. It easily washes off the plate, even with cold water...and our water pressure sucks! I'd like to know if anyone else has noticed this?

EricV,

Now that you mentioned it, I noticed the same thing with Wellness (which is a plus in my mind, the more liquid I can get into my cats, the better).

I commented elsewhere recently that I had 2 dishes for my senior most kitty that I put aside for a few hours, one had FF in it and the other had Wellness in it.  The FF really dried up to a crumbly texture.  The Wellness was actually still pretty moist.

I tossed both as they had been out too long and gave him fresh food.

Does the Wellness rinse off the plate easier than the FF?

JustMe and EricV,

I've noticed that some canned cat food contain guar gum.  Don't know what are the properties of guar gum, or why it's added to the food.

Have noticed that some flavors of Wellness, Friskies, AvoDerm, Iams, Solid Gold, Evanger's, Innova, and Evo contain guar gum.

Regarding guar gum,

"Unipektin has issued recalls after a testing laboratory in Germany found levels of dioxin above EU standards in an additive made from guar gum produced and exported by Unipektin."

I wonder if US pet food companies are testing for dioxin.

5CatMom,
If there is anything wrong with Wellness canned, my cats aren't showing it (knock on wood).
