5CatMom, going back to Dr. Renata R for a minute, something's bugging me about
her work. The crystals were found in the 2006 3-dog Korean study in 2004 tissues, and by Kathy
Brown in 2007 in 2004 tissues and 2007 tissues. So something's not making sense here I think about
how fast these crystals disappear? Or am I not understanding? lol ... won't be my first or
last mistake.

Yes, 3Cat - it's bugging me too becuase I tought I read somewhere that the crystals formed by melamine+CA were virtually insoluble - that's why so deadly! So, according to Dr. R, these dissolve in formaldehide (sp?).

I thought they were insoluble in the body. Formaldahyde isn't found in the body.

But there is probably some standard method of mounting tissue samples
for microscope examination, like kidneys, etc. I think I recall something being mentioned
about 2004 Asian samples having been saved in parafin (wax) I believe and
then examined by Kathy Brown in 2007. Haven't read the 2006 Korean research
study and Kathy Brown article in some time. Just bells going off that there
are differing claims for lengths of time melamine/cyanuric acid crystals would
be findable here by Dr. Brown and Dr. Renata R, and I find it confusing. Dr. Renata
R seems to be saying that many veterinary pathologists couldn't find the melamine
crystals because something dissolved them. Freely admit my science background
sucks, too.

Whatever the explanation on what medium dissolves melamine crystals, bottom
line of what's bugging me is how it affected the ultimate pathology results of
the sickened and dead pets from 2007.

Thanks for the link 5CatMom - looks like all the Solid Gold dry dog food made by Diamond in CA & MO met their criteria. In all of the bags of Solid Gold Indigo Moon cat food I have purchased since last November, ONE obviously-not-Indigo Moon dry kibble (we identified as an SG dog kibble) has shown up in a bag. Don't know what other foods they are processing through these Diamond plants, but this would indicate they are running one companys dry brands in a series.

Is that a bad thing? I'm not a business person, so I really don't know what this means. My employer is owned by a private equity group. Not any mentioned on this forum that I know of. They only invest in good solid companies with great potential to grow. They've poured money into the company to help it grow. Maybe I'm naive. What's the downside? Teach me.

The good news is that it wasn't KKR.. allegedly notorious for stripping assets, getting rid of middle management & folks close to pension (ergo higher salaries), from what I've heard in the past, and often reselling.
Berwind indicates on their page they have 100% ownership on their acquisitions...
Catterton shows Wellness under "realized investments" - with that, I'm assuming it's most likely that Wellness repaid investment $ , can't tell if Catterton retained any stock/equity.
Catterton shows Nature's Variety under current investments - so I'm assuming they have outstanding loans/investment funds there.
It all depends on the company, and their philosopy & business practices..

Call me crazy, but judging from the history of the PF industry, companies that are bought out and/or grow large (Iams, Hill's, Purina) seem to lose their focus on providing safe, high quality products. Without knowing specifics such as who now controls these companies, and especially who makes the ingredient buying decisions, it's hard to know how such ownership changes will affect their products. Companies do need a certain critical mass. But, IMHO, when it comes to PF companies, bigger is not better. To be fair, I emailed both companies. So far, no response.  5CatMom =^..^ = |

More reports of Nutro problems.
