I want to organize a section that lists foods that have made your animals sick (or show any signs of illness) weather they are on the recall list or not.  Also, if you are feeding your babies something that they seem to like and is not making them act unusual or seem ill please post here.  Please say if you are feeding cat(s) or dog(s) and how long you have been feeding them the food, and with what symptoms if it applies.
I understand that different animals will respond differently, and of course, ultimately the choice is up to the parent, you.  This is just food for thought.  Which I haven't heard of being poisoned, yet.

Hi,

Good I idea to keep it all organized.

Food:  Hills's Prescription Diet Feline Z/D Low Allergen Dry Cat Food and canned wet Z/D cat food

Cat:    2 1/2 year old pure bred Ragdoll

Problems:  3 days before some constipation, lethargic, but still eating, but drinking more water.  Totally crashed on March 24th and died of complete renal failure - could no longer move her legs, went into pulmonary and cardiac failure with the renal crash.

Yes the FDA knows and they have asked me to keep Sapphire's food for testing.  And yes I am making life miserable for Hill's/Colgate Investigations with 7 phone calls.

Hill's Z/D is still available to be bought at your Vet!  It is not recalled as of yet.

Regards,

This post is a great idea.  Some will say that the responses will just be "anecdotal" reports; but in my opinion, these anecdotal reports often give people like myself the first warning bells that a food may be unsafe.  Right now, like many pet guardians, I feel like I am wading through a mine-field with my beloved cats... trying desperately to get them from point A to point B without getting "blasted" by a false or mistep.  I scour blogs daily and since I work from home, i have find that I spend more than 50% of my time trying to stay abreast of the current pet food situation.  What pet foods have problems and what do not will be an enormous help to people like me.  OK... thank God and the angels my cats and I seemed to have just scraped through the recalls.  I fed them brands implicated in the wheat gluten recall (Eukanuba and Iams) and the now rice protein concentrate recall (Natural Balance)... but someone must be watching over me becuase the varieties I fed them were not included in the recalled batches... I am on "High Alert" and have been sice March 17.  I have returned the Iams and Eukanuba even though they were suposedly "safe".  Admittedly, my cats did not seem to have any problems while I was feeding these to them (Iams Weight Management Entree for cats, canned; Eukanuba Flaked Select Tuna, Seafood, Chicken; Eukanuba Indoor dry).  Then I switched to Natural Balance Indoor Ultra Preimum canned and other varieties... no problesm but I have "quarantined" these cans becuase of the NB recall.  Wait, let me make reading this simpler.  Since the March 17 MenuFoods recall... I have fed my two cats (one is 9 yrs old, the other is 1 yr old - both neutered males):

1.  Natural Balance Indoor Utra Premium canned - no problems apart from cats not being too thrilled with it
2.  Natural Balance Tuna (something) can - NO problems; cats liked it better
3.  Natural Balance Venison and Green Peas can - NO problem; cats loved it
4.  Natural Balance Chicken and Liver Pate can - no problems; cats liked it
****  set aside ALL NB cans since the rice protein concntrate problem even though none of the above has the ingredient - but can't bring myself to trust any pet food manufacturer that runs into trouble
5.  Castor and Pollux UltraMix Indoor Dry - NO problmes; 9 yr old cat loves it; 1 yr old will eat it but prefers Solid Gold ... has rice protein concetrate but the bad was nearly spent by the time of the RPC recall... OMG - not buying this for now
6.  Solid Gold Katz-N-Flocken Dry - NO problems: 1 yr old loves it.
7.  Solid Gold Blended Tuna can - NO problems: 9 yr old absolutely loves it; 1 yr old will eat it
8.  Natura Evo can - NO problems: both cats love it
9.  Natura Innova "Light" can - NO problems: both cats eat it OK
10.  Natura Innova dry - still untried (unopened)

11.  Home-made RAW food (beef, egg yoke, crushed egg shells, carrots, parsley and pumpkin)  -  cats eat it if I make sure they are hungry enough and if I sprinkle a little kibble over it

I have been wondering about Performatrin canned cat food the one made for Pet Valu stores here in Canada. I have been feeding 3 of my cats Performatrin canned usually Whitefish variety along with Iams Hairball dry food for a long time. The other cat gets Fancy Feast as her canned food because she won't eat anything else.

I have noticed no problems with either any of the canned food. I really wonder though about Performatrin. On the Pet Valu website they do NOT mention that their food is made by Menu Foods, however, at http://www.thepetfoodlist.com/petfoods_pg2.htm
it says that most of the Performatrin canned food is made by Menu Foods.

It makes me very nervous continuing to feed this food when on the Pet Valu website they seem to ignore the fact that Menu Foods is the company preparing their canned food and only refer to the foods that have been recalled by Menu and other Pet Food companies.   I would think they would at least mention that their food has been tested and found free of any of the substances but maybe it hasn't been tested Sad Shocked  I find this whole situation reprehensible.

Unfortunately I honestly don't know what to feed my cats with the almost daily new recalls.  I have stayed with Performatrin only because I see no problems in my cats.

Has anyone heard anything else about the Pet Valu brand of cat or dog food?

I also have a dog who has been fed a very small amount of Ol'Roy dog food with her main food coming from Technical Senior. I did not feed her any of the foods that have been recalled thank goodness!!!  But I have stopped giving her any canned food until I find one I think I can trust.

One of my cats has bladder stones and my Vet has been trying to get me to switch to a vet diet but my cat will not touch the food. After all the recalls I am very glad that he didn't like the prescription foods! Smiley

I would love to hear any ideas on Performatrin or from anyone who uses it

I want to switch them all to mostly canned food to increase their hydration but

Ladywillow- I send my deepest sympathies to you.  Your dear Sapphire is in good hands now, watching over you!
Thank you for your posts.  As I said, I don't think this will solve my what to feed my poor sweet babies problem, but it helps to know other people's experiences.  I think we have all figured out that the pet food companies and the fda cannot be trusted to keep our babies safe.  One day the food is "safe" and the next it is on the recall list.  The grocery/pet store is now a mine field.  My babies are still eating the Purina ProPlan, not because I'm thrilled with the ingredient list, but b/c so far (thank god and my angel) they seem fine.  I watch them closely.  Normal water intake, seems normal urination/defication- thought it is hard to monitor individually when they all have access to the same litter boxes and I have to be at work (sometimes atleast, though since this recall I have been trying to be at home more-my boss is really nice), normal activity level (2 chase eachother around, the third cat is much more laid back, very calm, but I don't think she is lethargic, just a cat! LOL The dog is a hyperactive nut, like always -she eats Purina Little Bites, and is fine as well.  I have also fed the cats Pet Promise.  They acted fine, but turned their noses up at it after a week.  I feed no canned food anymore.  I cook organic chicken, steak etc. so they can have a change from dry food and to increase the moisture content in their food.  They were used to eating Friskies canned food.  Not recalled, and they were fine, but after the recall was first issued I refused to buy it again.  Paranoid.   And for good reason.
I am not familiar with Canadien stores or products, so not much help their.  I will search for info.

Thanks Blackcats In case anyone wants to see my babies they are all online at my babies.  Here in Canada we have most of the same brands you do but I believe we have a few other specialty stores that are not in the US like Pet Valu. We have Petsmart, Petcetera, Walmart etc. and the other big chain pet stores here as well as most of the regular big pet food manufacturers.

Pet Valu here has just changed the formulation on all their own Performatrin brand pet foods which makes me suspicious of what was in the previous cans. As I found that their product is made by Menu Foods and tried to discuss it with my local Pet Valu store, they slid away from the questions I was asking and told me they had never heard of Menu Foods prior to the recalls. Seemed odd to me, when a person owns a franchise you'd think they'd know about the brand exclusive to the company they represent ..hmmmmm

Hi all,
I spoke to a representative at Blue Spa Select yesterday about their adult canned foods, since they have a recall on the kitten dry foods.  The rep assured me that none of their other formulas contain rice protein concentrate.  However, on the recalled kitten food, they are merely switching the sourcing of the rice protein concentrate to another supplier and the formula will still contain the rice protein concentrate.  He would not/could not tell me the source of the new rice protein concentrate.
What was interesting however was that the rep "Tim" said that the reason the contaminated rice protein concentrate go into the kitten formula was because "Wilbur Ellis intentionally faked the documents" about the testing on this particular batch of protein!  So if Blue Spa is telling their customers this, why hasn't the FDA stepped in?  Why hasn't any site (Blue Spa included) reported this before?  What else did they fake/forge?  The FDA should shut down this operation immediately but they aren't even recognizing the problem!

Hi blackcats,

Thank you so much for your condolences it has been really heartbreaking.  But at least these forums help us to say what is harming our cats and what is good food for our cats too.

dbg10 I do not know if you are in British Columbia, but we have Tisol Pet Food Stores, and they are awesome.  They have every top line cat food - no grains at all. Tisol has all the top canned cat foods and raw foods too.  Also they have complete foods for dogs too.  If they do not have it and I would be surprised they will order it in.

And yes in Kelowna, British Columbia I phoned a pet store the other day for a friend to question on what they had, and the sales lady tried to push Nutro on me ... no kidding!  I told her not to quite her night job, but please do us cat and dog lovers a favor quit her day job fast!  She had no idea about Nutro ... that is down right scary!

Joanne

My heart goes out to all of you who have lost pets or whose pets are ill. There has been great wrongdoing here, and I hope those responsible pay for their actions. We may not see justice served, but I firmly believe that there will be an accounting - ultimately.

Our two cats (littermates, female, feral rescue as kittens, 100% indoor kitties) are both 8 years old this spring. They appear to be healthy, for which I am grateful. Like many of you, I've been through a lot of cat food lately. Here's what they've eaten, and my remarks:

Hills Science Diet kibble - various regular adult flavors, oral care, indoor cat, and hairball control - my girls have eaten this since kittenhood, topped off with a bit of canned food. They have always eaten it happily, except that Callie has vomitted it up just after eating on more occasions than we'd like to see. I always attributed it to a sensitive stomach until the recall. I've become more informed about cat nutrition now, and suspect she may just not digest all the grain easily. When the recalls began, I dropped the Science Diet kibble in favor of Natural Balance Ultra Premium Dry. (None of these Hills products have been recalled)

Natural Balance Ultra Premium Dry - Our girls ate very small quantities of this for about 2 weeks. I switched them to it, thinking it was safer. I was planning to ease them out of dry food altogether when the Natural Balance products started to be quarantined. I stopped feeding it at that time. The girls both liked the NB kibble and showed no ill effects. (This kibble has not been recalled)

9-Lives canned (various flavors, especially fishy blends) - They ate a lot of this over the years; no problems and loved it. (not recalled)

Sophisticat canned (various flavors) - I hadn't bought any recently, but over the years had given a lot of this to the kitties. They liked it, and were fine. I wouldn't trust it now, as some Sophisticat products were recalled.

Natural Balance canned (various flavors, except Venison) - The girls ate this for about 2 weeks. I switched from 9-Lives to PetGuard and NB, thinking they'd be safer and more nutritious. The cats loved NB, but I dropped it when NB started showing up in the recalls. No health problems. (None of the items I bought have been recalled)

PetGuard Canned - The girls had one can of this, and liked it a lot; no ill effects. (not recalled)

Felidae canned - I only tried one can, and the girls wouldn't touch it. I didn't argue with them. (not recalled)

Homemade raw food
- I am currently feeding the girls homemade raw food made with chicken and turkey plus supplements. I am having to mix it with some "people tuna" to get them to eat it. After about a week, Foot Foot has come around and is wolfing down her dinner and her sister's too (very unusual). I think she's figured out that she's a carnivore after all. Callie has eaten a little of it when mixed well with tuna, but she's still pretty averse to it. I think another day or two will bring her around, and then I'll reduce and eliminate the tuna over a few days. They have tolerated the raw food well - they just need to adjust to the change.

Over the years, the only ailments I've seen with either cat are:

  • Foot Foot has recently licked a lot of fur off her belly. We suspect she just missed us when we went away on spring break, since there doesn't seem to be anything else going on.

Callie has had a sensitive stomach over the years, and tends to throw up easily.

Callie has quite a few hairballs

Callie could lose a little weight (and stop stealing her sister's food)

Neither one has as shiny a coat as I'd like to see, but perhaps it's their fur type
