This has been kept from the public, I buy horse feed at least twice a month and have just heard of it.
Just thought I would pass it along in case some of the readers have horses, pigs or goats. Shocked

Edited to add: I did find this information on the Purina website.

Eastern U.S. Feed Product Retrieval
Land O’Lakes Purina Feed LLC has implemented a voluntary product retrieval
of certain feeds manufactured between November 3, 2007 and February 8,
2008 at our Statesville, N.C., feed plant; between January 1, 2008 and February
8, 2008 at our Harrisburg, Penn., feed plant; and between January 1, 2008 and
March 10, 2008 at our Guilderland, N.Y. plant.
This voluntary retrieval was initiated due to the possible presence of aflatoxin
contamination above acceptable levels.
To date, we have received no confirmed aflatoxin-related animal health
complaints involving any of the retrieved products. Nevertheless, we have taken
such precautionary action as our utmost priority continues to be our customers
and the well-being of their animals.
All dealers who purchased any of the retrieved products directly from Land
O’Lakes Purina Feed LLC have been notified. These dealers are located in the
following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina,
Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and
West Virginia.
Our investigation and product testing identified one ingredient of concern, which
originated from a single supplier. We have discontinued purchasing from this
supplier. Other feed companies that purchased from this supplier are facing a
similar situation.
For more information about specific products included in the retrieval, contact the
Statesville, N.C., Feed Plant at 704-924-5100 or the Harrisburg, Penn., Feed
Plant at 717-737-4581.

Thank you so much for this link and info.
We lost a very loved pet goat last year from complications resulting from nutrient imbalances and toxins in manufactured feed.
My husband and I are very concerned about what is in our horse and goat feeds...there is so little regulation concerning livestock feeds. So many times we have opened horse feed and found mold, shards of glass or plastic, wood chips etc--in premium feeds, not junk feed, ---. We have to inspect everything before we feed it and scrutinize the ingredients...manufacturers can slip in all types of animal byproducts and chemicals to boost the protein percentage....ok I will stop now...it is just such an ongoing problem...ugggh!!!!!
Thank you for posting this and thinking of us who have goats, horses and donkeys as pets in addition to our kitties and dogs.

Me, too, catmom5. I couldn't find this on the Purina website, searching for horse
feed retrieval or recall. Nor is it found on search of FDA recalls and alerts. Curious.
Must be AAFCO standards, though, don't you think, to allow some level?

Does anybody know if aflatoxin can transmit into bagged pet foods if stored in the vicinity of the affected bagged horse feed?  Would the bags both have to be open?

I'm wondering since one of the feed stores I buy from carries purina horse feed, too.

I think you are pretty safe if the bag is sealed and aflatoxin was not in the good bag of food. I'm sure if the bags were both opened then any bacteria could attach to the food inside if someone handles the bag and dust from the bag flew around and got into the other open bag of food or if someone handled the tainted bag and then put their hands in the good bag.... Kind of like washing coke cans before drinking out of them...."dust" gets everywhere and we don't always know what the "dust" is.

Just for clarification, Purina Mills and Nestle-Purina are two different companies.  Nestle-Purina (who I believe is a French owned company) produces the foods you purchase in the supermarket and grocery stores.  Purina Mills', which is an American company, products are ONLY available from your feed or farm animal supply store such as Agway.

In US they can use the same checkered pattern but are not the same company as the pet food company we see in Petsmart, etc... - good point Just Toby.

Thanks for the heads up. Just wondered why there is an acceptable level of aflatoxin . . . Huh Huh Huh

From what I've read, the answer is POLITICS.

Aflatoxin is a widespread problem in grain.  In countries that experience hot and humid weather conditions, it is expecially problematic.  The aflatoxin policy, which is determined by bureaucrats, politicians and lobbyists, sets a standard that allows grain to be imported/exported.

What's interesting is that USA standards allow a higher aflatoxin level than many other countries.  I'll try to find that link again.

As with many other things, the USA seems to be in "a race to the bottom" WRT import standards.

One import standard that we're very familiar with is the import standard for melamine.  IMHO, when the EPA deleted the tolerance for melamine, all hell broke loose.  The bureaucrats and politicians, being either very naive or very stupid, didn't anticipate that crooks (both foreign and domestic) would take advantage of the rule change.  To demonstrate how truly naive and stupid they were, the EPA "announced" the new rule in the Federal Register (it's online) for all the world to see.

The folks in Washington really need to get a clue.
