Funny, my cat used to love Innova until a couple of months ago and then he suddenly refused to touch it.  I ended up switching to Eagle Pack kibble and tossing the Innova.  I have occasionally fed him the canned Innova (though it's made by Menu so I only used it once in a while, he didn't really like it much anyway).  Today, with this news, I decided enough is ENOUGH and cold-turkeyed him over to Feline's Pride (raw food diet, fortunately I was able to buy it locally) with baby food on top until he gets used to it.  So far, good.  I will NOT keep feeding him commercial PFI crap and being scared **itless that I am poisoning him every time he eats.  I would not be at all surprised if this turns out to be a vitamin contamination problem, which means all commercial food is suspect.
I've been feeding Felines Pride for about 3 months now for my crew, with amazing results.  And I mean everything has improved!  Transitioned them over by a little bit of baby food right before each feeding; also slightly cooked the raw at first and still supplemented with Felidae canned.  My 19 year old looks absolutely beautiful after shedding her entire coat and growing silk back.  Skin rashes on her back legs cleared up.  Tearing eye cleared up.  Plays like a kitten, barks at me like a dog, hasn't done that in years.  Glad you made the switch!

This explains why the [mean/disagreeable person]s have not replied to me on both issues. When I wrote on Melamine right away they were emailing me. When I wrote on these two toxins  they NEVER replied to my emails again which I found odd because they had been so good about emails....F OFF to this company I won't deal with them again...One strike and you are OUT when it comes to MY pets health

Nabiya, I am about to order some Felines Pride. Would you tell me if your cats prefer one flavor over another? Also, you mention that you cooked it slightly when first starting out. How did you cook it and for how long? Last question, what type of baby food? I must seem really ignorant, but as this is my last hope I want to make sure I have done everything correctly to have success in my kitty taking to it.

I called Natura Pet Foods yesterday afternoon...The highest ranking person I got was Veronica.
I was on my computer and directed her to this thread on her computer as we were talking....

After reading this thread, she said she was not aware of this problem and would contact her Superiors about this problem !!!

I said it would be a good idea for one of the owners or a very high ranking official to respond to this, and respond here on this Itchmo thread.....with real truth and facts..

Remember the old saying that " you can't judge the book by its cover"..
These days we can't always judge the food by the pretty web site....Even reading all the ingredients isn't good enough anymore... !!!

I believe the only one left that makes their own kibble is Eagle Pack...But how do we know the quality of the ingredients or origen of their ingredients as well...

What went wrong at Natura pet foods to cause this HuhHuhHuhHuh?

Eagle Pack also makes the Artemis kibble. I believe Fromm also makes their own kibble, although I think it is VERY high in carbs. I am not sure who makes the Wellness but I was always under the impression that they made it themselves. Anyone out there have this info on Wellness?

Laurie- I had called Wellness several times. The last time I asked if they could put in writing [on their website or to me]that the facility had no recalls. The answer was no. Its made in different plants & at least some was from ANI.They used to make their own but now its all done elsewhere. If this problem is in the vitamins, there is no safe commercial food or additive. Most of the vitamins come from China & all pet food has vitamins added. Except Sheba cans. It says right on the top its not a complete diet. Maybe Evangers cans also. But a lot of people have complained of finding things in the cans of both.  Bone, plastic, guar gum etc.

Nabiya and Laurie: I am so excited about the Feline's Pride!  Rufus's energy this morning was 100% improved; he was zipping around the house like he hasn't done in months!  I think it only comes in one formulation (chicken) but there might be others.  Also, I used lamb baby food to get him going on it - first I fed him a little of the baby food from a spoon, then mixed it in with the Feline's Pride. I think any meat baby food would be fine and I've never fed it to Rufus but *wow* did he go for it Smiley  FP comes frozen, so I hacked off a chunk and defrosted it in the refrigerator, then put the amount I plan to feed him on a plate in my toaster oven for about 3 minutes until it warmed up a bit, then mixed in the baby food and he jumped right in to eat (and he's usually pretty picky).  Also, it's nice because it doesn't stink like canned food.

There are four flavors, and my cats like them in this order: cornish hen, duck, turkey and chicken.  I cooked it slightly in a regular skillet as a pattie (no oil or anything added), cooking it all the way through at first, then just lightly browning each side but pink in the middle.  I then cooked it less and less over a couple weeks period of time.  However, during the time I was cooking slightly I was supplementing with Felidae canned because cooking the raw is also destroying the vitamins and minerals (especially the taurine).  Before each feeding of the raw, I also gave a tablespoon of Gerbers jarred baby food to entice them into eating.  After about 4 weeks, they were eating the raw without the cooking.

I have grave reservations about Gerbers baby food because it contains corn starch which I believe comes from China.  I have emailed, live chatted, called, written Gerbers and have received nothing but BS from them about where/what country the corn starch is sourced from.  Since about 80% of corn starch comes from China I would guess theirs does, too.  I only use the baby food when I absolutely have to but I wouldn't tell anyone not to use it.

The Felines Pride comes frozen in 2.5 lb. containers.  I partially thaw them out (but not all the way) until there is still the ice flakes in the food, but to the point where you can scoop it out.  I put the food into smaller tupperware containers that hold a day's worth of food for my 3, and re-freeze.  Each day I take out a tupperware to thaw completely for feeding the next day.  The completely thawed food should only be used for a couple of days in the refrigerator.  After that I don't trust it any more since it's raw.

I feed twice a day, but you can't let this food sit out for more than half an hour or so.  I keep it refrigerated and I as I need to use it, I heat up a small plate in the microwave (without the food on it) for about 40 seconds.  I then put the refrigerated food on the heated up plate and it gets to room temperature in about a minute.  After about half an hour any food left on the plate is put down the garbage disposal.  This seldom happens though when you get them into a routine to eat twice a day.

I have had a couple of occassions where they wouldn't eat the food when I first put it down for whatever reason.  I immediately throw it away, just trusting their senses, and make up another plate full. Hope this helps!  Let me know if you have any other questions.

Nabiya, thanks for the good info!  I noticed the cornstarch in the baby food too and thought "hmmm" but at this point it seems to be the lesser evil.  I sometimes use cornstach in cooking and I know a little goes a long way, so maybe there's not too much in the baby food.  Also, I could tell Rufus was a little unsure about the texture of the raw food as he stopped every minute or so and smacked his lips a bit - I think I will try cooking it just a little and see if that improves the texture issue.

I noticed the lip smacking, too.  Seems like the raw food is a bit "stringy" so when they lick it up a little hangs out of their (cute little) mouths sometimes.  If Rufus is eating it uncooked, I would stick with that because cooking does destroy some vitamins and minerals.  But if you must cook, supplement with some canned food like Felidae or whatever he will eat that's not going to kill him of course....

Does anyone know if Feline's Pride is good for a cat with CRF?  Looks like the phosphorus levels are low but I'm not good at figuring out the math with the dry ingredient calculation Wink

SkepticalGirl, Here is the link to the Felines Pride nutritional analysis. http://www.felinespride.com/home/home.aspx   On this page there is reference to CRF. http://www.felinespride.com/customercare/vet.aspx

SkepticalGirl,
The link to the felines pride nutritional analysis shows the dry matter conversion for the chicken flavor at 1.7% phosphorous. (there's also a link to how to do the dry matter conversion on that page).   I'm no expert, but from my reading it seems for CRF the dry matter phosphorous is suggested to be under 1%.  If you do the conversion for their other flavors they range about 1.4 to 1.5, which still seems on the high end.  Personally, I had to use my judgement choosing a food for what the vet says is early CRF with one of my cats - the vet suggested Hill's and I said no thanks.  I'm using a nonprescription canned food.
