An article on Page 1D of Monday's Health section incorrectly stated the cause of typhoid fever. Typhoid fever
is caused by the bacterium salmonella typhi. It is different from salmonella typhimurium, which can cause serious
food poisoning and is the type of bacterium found in tainted peanut butter products.

Thank you, mandycat, for the information and the help.

The strain of Salmonella they found in the peanut butter is Salmonella typhimurium and is NOT the strain that causes Typhoid Fever.  That strain is called Salmonella typhi.  There are about 2500 strains of Salmonella, so it can get confusing.  Here is article from World Health Organization on Salmonella.

        http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs139/en/

Information on Salmonella typhi:

         http://microbes.historique.net/typhi.html

Information on Salmonella typhimurium:

         http://www.ebi.ac.uk/2can/genomes/bacteria/Salmonella_typhimurium.html

I'm not minimizing the seriousness of the illness that Salmonella typhimurium can cause, but I think that the article that stated that it caused "typhoid fever" is very misleading and wrong.  This kind of erroneous information can cause panic, and the very least I can do is to present correct information to those reading this forum.

Glad that questions are being raised. The degree of how sick one gets is important too. Those who wish to continue to eat peanut product may just be doing so at their own risk. I also posted on this plant using peanuts that arrive already roasted and where is the source of those peanuts from? Does anyone know? Is this place they come from contaminated too? I'm not eating any PEANUTS til more is know about this.

Like the pet food recalls - one after the other after the other every friday for weeks on end. How many more products contain this peanut product? Are they being recalled as a safety measure?

The peanutbutter that I have ate was from a lot number that was associated with Salmonella Tennessee.  I took my jar and the CDC printout to my doctors yesterday and am currently being tested for Salmonella.  Feeling somewhat better now, but this past month felt pretty lousy, the diarrhea was uncontrollable and unbelieveable and the nausea is still with me.  I was riding this thing along thinking it was either from a new medication I was taking or a virus that would eventually go away.  It's snowing today, so I can't make it back to my doctors office, so will have to wait until the weather clears up.

This outbreak began back in 2007, go figure.

Carolina Prime Pet Announces Nationwide Recall of Dog Treats

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Murphy, North Carolina – Jan. 27, 2009 – Carolina Prime Pet, a manufacturer and distributor of dog treats, is voluntarily recalling four of its dog treats that contain peanut butter made by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is the focus of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigation into potential salmonella contamination of peanut butter and paste.

The recalled treats are sold at various retail establishments in the U.S. and Canada. Although Carolina Prime Pet is not aware of any reported cases of illness related to these products, it has issued this voluntary recall as a precautionary measure.

The recalled products include only the following types of Carolina Prime Pet treats in single unit packages with lot date codes between 081508 and 010909:

6" Beef Shank Peanut Butter, UPC 063725542007
2pk Hooves Peanut Butter, UPC 063725542000
4" Rawhide Bone Peanut Butter, UPC 063725542003

"Report pets with Salmonella; send samples
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Veterinarians who encounter a patient that has eaten peanut butter or peanut-containing products and has signs
of a Salmonella infection are encouraged to report the information to their state and send samples.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asks that suspected or confirmed cases of Salmonella infection
be reported to determine whether an animal is infected with the outbreak strain, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. This can be done by contacting a regional Food and Drug Administration consumer complaint coordinator. For a state-by-state listing of coordinators, go to www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html.

The CDC also advises reporting any incidence to a state veterinarian or state public health veterinarian; see links
at www.avma.org/aa/peanut_butter_recall.asp. The product manufacturer should also be contacted.

Regarding samples, the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians recommends submitting feces
(preferred) or vomitus to a state veterinary diagnostic laboratory for Salmonella culturing and DNA fingerprinting. If a
state laboratory cannot perform the fingerprinting procedure, the laboratory will forward the sample to one that can.

These AAVLD laboratories will charge the cost of the testing to the veterinarian who submitted the samples. The
veterinarian will then determine how the charges will be billed to the client. Clients seeking reimbursement should be
instructed to contact the manufacturer.

To locate an AAVLD laboratory, go to the AAVLD home page at www.aavld.org/mc/page.do and click on the
"Accreditation" link on the menu bar.

At least three states have reported incidents of dogs showing signs of Salmonella infection. All had eaten peanut
butter products on the recall list."
