Well I know companies are lining up to say their peanut butter stuff is ok but I wouldn't trust that.  Just like 2007 all the pet food companies were putting up on their websites that their food was affected and then a couple of weeks later OOPs I guess it is.

This just makes me so angry and I don't believe anyone.  It takes so long for anyone to figure out what is making people sick and then like a house of cards they fall down.

Good point, ranger.  I also wonder about cross-contamination.  What if manufacturers/store bakeries didn't thoroughly clean equipment between production of peanut butter and non-peanut butter foods.

I was wondering about cross-contamination also.

Newman's own is saying that their suppliers and manufacturers have done salmonella testing, but I kind of wondered why they were not doing any testing themselves.  In any case, I have stopped giving the dogs I walk any treats with peanut butter just to be safe.

Done.  Merged 3 threads.  Will also pin to top of list since this is a current, active recall situation.

This was posted just a few hours ago on the FDA Center of Veterinary Medicine web site

January 22, 2009

FDA Expands Peanut Butter Recall to Include Pet Food Products
http://www.fda.gov/cvm/PeanutButterRecall.htm

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to investigate potential Salmonella contamination of peanut butter and paste made at the Blakely, Georgia facility of Peanut Corporation of American (PCA), and is informing pet owners that the recall also includes some pet food products.

Many companies that received peanut butter or peanut paste from PCA have in turn issued recalls. A searchable list of all products being recalled can be found at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/index.cfm which includes a separate category of pet food product recalls http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/index.cfm#PetFood.   As the investigation continues and new information becomes available, FDA will update its list of recalled products.

Happy Tails Multi-Flavored Dog Biscuits Recalled

"Jewel-Osco, a division of Supervalu Inc. and leading Chicago supermarket and drugstore chain, recalled its Happy Tails multi-flavored dog biscuits. Like humans, salmonella in pets can cause diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain. It can also be transferred to other animals or humans."[/b]

I believe the Happy Tails store brand is sold in other Supervalu chains, not just Jewel.

http://www.supervalu.com/sv-webapp/

Supervalu Stores:

Jewel-Osco, Albertson's, Shoppers, Farm Fresh, Shop & Save, Hornbacher's, SuperValu, Lucky, Cub Foods, WNewell, Shaw's, Acme, Biggs, Briston Farms, Save A Lot,

There is nothing as of now on either the FDA website or the Supervalu one.

Jan 24---Jewel-Osco recalls Happy Tails DOG BISCUITS
Start Date: 2009-01-24  End Date: 2009-02-24

"Jewel-Osco said this morning it is recalling a brand of dog biscuits because it may contain peanut butter contaminated with salmonella.

"In a statement, the company described it as a "precautionary move" and said that the product has not been "directly linked to the salmonella outbreak" that resulted in a nationwide recall of some peanut products made by Peanut Corp. of America in its Blakely, Ga., facility.

The recalled products, sold at Jewel-Osco stores, are Happy Tails Brand Multi-Flavored Dog Biscuits in 26-ounce (UPC#: 41163-42406) and 4-pound (UPC#: 41163-42403) sizes.

"The release said that pets infected with salmonella "may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain." The release also said animals could carry the bacteria and infect humans or other animals.

"The company advised owners concerned their pets may have consumed the biscuits to consult a veterinarian.

"Owners can return the dog biscuits to a Jewel-Osco store for a full refund or exchange.

"The company said no other products are included in the recall at this time and that other peanut butter products in its stores are not part of the Peanut Corp. of America recall.

"Jewel-Osco, a SUPERVALU company, operates 186 stores in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana.

"Customers with questions can contact SUPERVALU at 877-932-7948"

Happy Tails and Shoppers Valu Brand Multi-Flavored Dog Biscuts Recalled

Shaw's is Recalling Happy Tails and Shoppers Valu Brand Assorted Dog Biscuits

"WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Shaw's is voluntarily recalling Happy Tails and Shoppers Valu multi-flavored dog biscuit products because they may contain peanut butter that has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. According to the FDA, pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Well animals can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The products were sold at Shaw's stores. The identified items have not been directly linked to the salmonella outbreak. However, because the safety of customers, and in this case their pets, is a top priority and out of an abundance of caution, Shaw's has voluntarily recalled the products.

This product recall includes all:

Product Name and Description: Shoppers Valu Multi-Flavored Dog Biscuits, 4 lb

UPC#: 41130-30507

Customers who purchased the recalled dog biscuit products can bring the product back to a Shaw's store location for a full refund or exchange.

No other products are currently included in this recall. Based on information from the FDA at this time, the peanut butter for sale in Shaw's stores is not affected by the recall issued by Peanut Corporation of America.

Customers with questions can contact SUPERVALU Inc. at 877.932.7948. Customers can visit the FDA Web page at www.fda.gov for more information and updates on the situation."

As shown by the Albertson's, Shaw's, and Shopper's Valu recalls, this does affect all SuperValu chain stores.

Just to reinforce that human peanut products are not safe for your pets either, here's
a report of a dog dying after consuming Austin crackers. So no peanut products
for your pets or be extremely careful:
