Here's the Highland, IL pre mix plant:

http://www.trouw-nutritionusa.com/displaypage.asp?page_key=844

BUT--go over here to their Companion Animal Products page, the links for these products are sourced to Trouw, UK:

http://www.trouw-nutritionusa.com/displaypage.asp?page_key=755

http://www.trouw-nutritionusa.com/global.asp?page_key=443

The map at this link shows you where Trouw is thoughout the world in green; it appears that the flawed Nutro pre-mixes came from the Highland, IL plant.

http://www.allaboutfeed.net/news/group-depre-buys-pet-food-division-trouw-nutrition-id3458.html

Group Depré buys pet food division Trouw Nutrition 06 Aug 2009
Group Depré from Beernem, Belguim acquired the pet food division of Trouw Nutrition Belgium.

This acquisition fits in the strategy of the company to increase its market share in the pet food market.  The pet food division of Group Depré - Fides Petfood – will therefore double its staff to 30 in the near future The production will be tripled to 45, 000 tonnes per year.

So is this Trouw pre-mix coming from France and/or Belgium?

3cat,
Total speculation, but I'm guessing that they sold the division that actually makes pet food, not the premixes.  The brand is Arion.

In the Trouw pre-mix info that Menusux posted above, Im am confused.  So I understand they made an official recall thru FDA but WHO are they recalling it from other than Nutro?  Why would this still be ongoing?  This is a nutrient pre-mix and base made by Trouw and sent to Nutro only right?  Me's confused....here's the info again:

I agree, Sandi, the notices are confusing. There's a mention of a French manufacturer in the notice posted
by menusux as a pdf, and a recall start time of April 10, 2009. It's pretty confusing.

Here's what the recall for the French company was about:

Laborie Medical Technologies Urodynamic Catheters, Twin Lumen 6 Fr, 40cm, for Cystometry.  Catalog #: CAT-20, Recall Z-1711-2009

Recalling Firm:
Laborie Medical Technologies, Williston, VT, by telephone and e-mail beginning April 10, 2009.

Manufacturer:
Prince Medical, Ercuis, France.  Firm initiated recall is complete.

Reason:

Mix up in the labeling and packaging. There were 8Fr catheters mixed inside the 6Fr catheter packages.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_catheter_scale

"The French catheter scale (most correctly abbreviated as Fr, but also often abbreviated as FR or F) is commonly used to measure the outer diameter of cylindrical medical instruments including catheters. In the French Gauge system as it is also known, the diameter in millimeters of the catheter can be determined by dividing the French size by 3, thus an increasing French size corresponds with a larger diameter catheter."

So this was the recall above the Trouw pre-blend for veterinary medical equipment with two sizes mixed and some mislabeled because of that.

On why the recall is ongoing, I would believe it's because they haven't accounted for all the bad pre-mix.  You're right, Sandi, that this is supposed to be pre-blends custom made for Nutro.  You also see where the mix was sent--to California (Victorville) and Tennessee (Lebanon), the two Nutro plants.

No idea how they're accounting for the bad pre-blend, whether it has some basis on Mars' recovery of all the potentially adulterated bags of these Nutro products or not.  We can be sure MARS won't give us any information on that!  Angry

Carol,

I remember when this began, you called Trouw and had your phone number passed on to Mars Nutro without your consent, so I think we can say that Trouw isn't going to answer questions about it either.  Angry

Nutro complaints from dog and cat owners continue at Consumer Affairs.

Tammy of Hoffman Estates, IL lost one of her labs, but the remaining one survived. Tammy called Nutro and learned of a formula change.

Tammy writes, "After speaking with Nutro yesterday, it seems that approximately 10 months ago, they changed formula from all beef to all chicken and for some strange reason (?) they are now in the process of switching all the US plants back to all beef. The Canadian plants will remain all chicken. This just seems kind of odd that all of a sudden, the formula is changing again."

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/nutro.html

While it's not uncommon for a pet food company to alter the formula a bit, doesn't the change from one protein source (beef) to another (chicken) seem extreme?

thanks for the post, 5CatMom. Wonderful to see you post again  Cheesy

...and I agree with you that a switch from chicken to beef is an EXTREME formula change!  And so cavalier about it too! That's what we get folks with an industry that has been left self-regulated for so long.

I love seeing the member 5catmom post!!!! Grin

and also on the link from consumeraffairs I read "Carole" wrote
We learned of the recall of Nutro MAX CAT Adult Food Roasted Chicken Flavor when we went to a local pet store to purchase cat food, and found that the shelves were empty. By then, our two cats had already consumed an entire 16 pound bag of the recalled cat food. There had been one incident of vomiting. There had been one incident of diarrhea. We were concerned, but not overly concerned, having been reassured by a representative of Nutro Products, Inc. that the recall was strictly "voluntary".

Read more: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/nutro.html#ixzz0OS2WSxJp

THIS is the impression a company gives when they say "voluntary" and we know that it is the only type of recall that can exist with anything but baby formula...This is the danger of people saying this---although it is probably legally true to say it---it gives an impression of "oh--everything may be okay--just in case--".  This type of attitude is so wrong---I remember when I joined Twitter strictly to help spread the word regarding this recent recall and the Twitter Nutro "ambassadors" were posting this was a voluntary recall too and I kept correcting them and would have it retweeted by others including PetConnection before they stopped doing it...One rep even "thanked " me for the info...yeah right---I say if you are going to work for a company and "speak" to potential consumers than it might be a good idea to get your facts straight before doing it...It is strange that companies can make consumers so afraid to speak up yet some allow their employees to not be completely upfront..and give completely false impressions...like this "Carole" at consumeraffairs!

Carol, thanks.

Just can't keep my big mouth shut, I guess.

Will we never have safe pet food?

5Cat, it is when we do keep our mouths shut that these problems continue to happen. I have serious doubts that we will ever have really safe, healthy pet food, but we need to continue to do what we do and let the pfc's know we're not going to turn away and ignore their disregard for our pet's health.

Glad to have you back on board!!!

RIP Bones - my big, beautiful boy

I just saw that documentary again last week on Documentary Channel (Canada). It was really tough to watch -- maybe tougher than the first time. Reliving the Menu crisis was harder than I thought it would be.
