mary blonde - you mentioned that Nutro was still on the shelves. From the Ultra Holisitic my dog had the same symptoms and that was before any reports on Consumer Affairs. I caught it in time and then this surfaces - just reinforces that there is something not right about this whole thing. Would anyone be taking money to look the other way. Yet, how could they - they must not have a conscience either if they can not feel for all the cats who suffer and dogs too from this stuff.

JJ- Don Earl emailed a lawyer to me who was looking into the Ultra line for a possible lawsuit. I can't find my email at the moment with his name but I'll keep looking. Perhaps it's on Don's website.

Thanks mary blonde. I was feeding the food back in 2006 from April thru August then took my dog off of it altogether.

http://www.cbs6albany.com/news/food-1264728-death-cat.htmlWRGB-TV, Albany, NY July 12, 2009 Toxic pet food blamed for cat's death; Are your pets safe? "A Saratoga County woman blames a pet food manufacturer for the death of her cat, and claims the store where she purchased the food failed to warn her about a voluntary recall."Karen Beshara, of Moreau, said her one-and-a-half year-old Siamese named Simona first became sick in early July. The animal's decreased appetite, lethargy, and swollen abdomen led to veterinary hospitalization. The night before scheduled surgery, Simona died."“I loved spending time with her,” said Katiya Beshara, 9. “ [After she died], I'd look around and I'd look for her, but I'd forget that she's not here.” "A few days later, Karen Beshara stopped at PetSmart to purchase more food for her surviving cats. She found the Nutro Max Cat shelf bare, with a sign notifying customers of a voluntary recall due to incorrect potassium and zinc levels.
"Beshara said she believes the Nutro caused the toxicity which resulted in Simona's death. Further, she said another of her cats -- Sly -- recently tested positive for a dangerously high zinc level."Doing her own investigative work, Beshara stumbled upon ConsumerAffairs.com -- an advocacy website that reports more than 900 complaints related to death or illness resulting from Nutro products. The website cites an anonymous source as claiming the Food and Drug Administration is investigating the company.
"However, on Nutro's own website, the company claims it has received no consumer complaints.
""I was told that nothing is confirmed," Beshara said of a conversation with a Nutro customer service representative.
"The mother of three is also angry at PetSmart, where she purchased the food. Though the company claims it notified all Pet Perks members of the voluntary recall, Beshara said she never received any calls or emails that her cats' food could be toxic."A PetSmart spokeswoman told CBS 6 that all members should ensure their contact information is active, but Bershara insisted hers is up to date. As proof, she showed CBS 6 several emails she has received detailing PetSmart sales and special offers. "Do you believe your pet has become sick or died as a result of Nutro foods? If so, email sflamisch@wrgb.com." Steve Flamisch is the Albany, NY reporter for WRGB-TV who is asking for the e-mails. I hope all who have had any first-person issues with Nutro foods, cat or dog food, will take the time to send him a note.

Thanks, menusux! Just sent him a long email detailing my Bonnie's losing battle with ARF. Hopefully enough people email him so he can cause a BIG stir and get picked by AP & the TV news.

Did anyone email Lisa McCormick about him ? She might be able to contact others from consumeraffairs to let them know about him.

Distressing to see the recent dates of these letters at Consumer Affairs: http://consumeraffairs.com/pets/nutro.html#ixzz0LfOSuAPS"Barbara of Ludlow, MA July 22, 2009 I purchase Nutro Adult Indoor cat food for the first time from Petco, as I was looking for an improved diet and nutritious cat food for my 2 cats. I became aware of the recall after feeding my cats this food for approximately 3 to 4 weeks. I returned the large bag of Nutro and purchased a smaller bag of Nutro in another flavor (adult oceanfish). I did notice that there were bags of Nutro on the shelf that had been recalled and mentioned it to the store manager, who stated that he had to check the listing again. I fed my cats the recently purchased Nutro for 2 days. My cats began to have diarrhea with blood. I checked on the internet and found out that the new bag I purchased was one of those listed as a recall. I now have to find out how to treat my cats and find a new cat food, but slowly weaning them off of the Nutro brand. It is difficult for me to believe that I am dealing with this rediculous chain of events, as I strove to find the best cat food to feed my pets. I am angry that the Petco store did not remove the recalled Nutro cat food from their shelves and continued to sell it. "Joanne of Mountain Top, PA July 17, 2009 I have a 6.5 year old female cat who has been fed Nutro Natural Choice Cat Food since we adopted her as a kitten. @ weeks ago she began acting funny by not eating and isolating herself. This quickly led to vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and loss of appetite completly. We have had her to the vet, and she has just returned home after being hospitalized. We have missed days of work and spent hundreds of dollars trying to make her well. She has all the symptoms of zinc poisoning, but we were unaware of the recall of Nutro cat food. I was feeding my cat poison, and did not know. She is still very sick, and we hope she will survive. We could not afford to keep her at the hospital any longer, so we are trying to handle this at home. We were devastated when I went to the internet tonight and found out about the recall! I have read many posts of similar stories, but on the Nutro website they claim they are not aware of any animal getting sick. That just can not be true."

While I think it's disgusting that stores still have this product on the shelf, I don't know what this person was thinking as she said she knew about the recalls and continued to feed her cat Nutro and didn't even check to see if the new bag she purchased was on the recall list before feeding it as she found others in the store that were on the list. This, in my opinion, is her own negligence.:

I agree, Bug. I was confused that she said she pointed out some recalled bags to the store manager but then she bought a different (also recalled) bag. ? Whoever is negligent (I believe it is ultimately Nutro and its marketers), I feel badly for the cats. I mainly wanted to keep this topic active and searchable

I just don't get it - why would someone purchase a food that has had a recall without first checking if that they had purchased was on the recall list first? Gawd , wonder how they would take care of a child

Not to mention the author of that complaint is "slowly weaning them off of the Nutro brand"!!! Are you crazy, lady? The food is making your cats sick, stop feeding it! I hate to dog, er..., speak roughly of folks who're dealing with food that by every right should at the VERY LEAST not poison our pets, but, come on, have some common sense, people!

I think we have to remember there are lots of people still out there with the mindset that the company will protect their pets and they did the right thing by recalling the food, yada, yada, yada. The lady is upset that the food was still on the shelves, rightfully so, but what about the fact that the whole recall was avoidable if they had good QC in place. I think the thing Im most steamed about besides cats getting sick from this food, is that no major TV news covered this recall....if anyone is reading this and their cat was made sick from this recalled food, please contact CNN or MSNBC or whatever major TV news you choose and report it to them. Its the only way they will find out and perhaps there is still a chance it would be covered and save some other kitties who might still be eating this food. Last I saw Nutro still has at their website, no reports of affected pets....

Were you expecting this from them - to list sick pets? That would affect the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. No such thing as information to help people with questions / cause there is nothing wrong with your television set - we are controlling it for the rest of your pets life.
