Excessive zinc?  Wonder if that is part of the ongoing problem with the dry dogfood?
Results on the tests I had done on my Bonnie's food came back pretty high.

People might want to call their vets even if they don't use this product and give them a heads up on this recall or email them the FDA recall info.  Just called mine.  Holiday weekend and all......

This recall is apparently due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in the finished product - an error made by a US-based premix supplier.  One batch had too much zinc and not enough potassium.  The premix batch had under-levels of potassium.  Affected dry foods:

Called my vet - they hadn't heard, yet, but they took it seriously and thanked me for calling.

OK, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.

What about the DOG FOOD?

Yes, I see what the recall notice says, but WHAT ABOUT THE DOG FOOD?

My indie store got a fax from Nutro...I hope they send them to ALL the retailers!  My vet gets FDA updates thank God!   Time for us to call our kitty owner friends and start spreading the word!

So how long ago was this food made?  The recall dates are May to Aug 2010, its not even August of 2009 yet.  Why are they just now detecting this?  Whatever happened to their wonderful quality control?  This is their QC statement on their site, so much for that.  And they wonder why pet parents dont trust them.  This should have been caught before it was put on the shelves.

And they claimed to know this past Monday...isn't today Thursday???  I hate the term voluntary recall...makes it sound like they are doing us a favor.... Angry Of course we know there is no mandatory recall authority for pet food don't we Itchmoers!!

"abundance of caution" should show up next...but where?

and what other pet food companies used the same pre-mix....as Nadine L said at Pet Connection...is this from a "ChemNutra" type problem...

An excerpt from Nutro's website:

Nutro ensures that only high quality ingredients go into the pet food we make. We procure ingredients only from qualified suppliers, many of whom we have worked with for over a decade.

Ingredient Sourcing
Suppliers and co-manufacturers must document the source and country of origin of all raw materials purchased for use in NUTRO® products.

Ingredient Testing
Our quality assurance personnel must qualify suppliers and co-manufacturers and their ingredients tested, before they can become approved for use in NUTRO® products.

Compliance Checks
Once raw materials arrive at a Nutro Products facility, we conduct tests to check for quality, safety, and consistency.

Adhering to Standards
Nutro Products’ testing of raw materials conforms to standards set by the USDA and AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials).

Wow, that's about all the kinds of dry cat food that they make!  Overdose of zinc can be toxic, especially to small animals like cats and kittens.  Angry  Note particularly that long-term over-exposure can be as bad as ingesting a large dose.

http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1677+1684&aid=2258

Putting this link here with symptoms of mild and severe zinc overdose, so that those who may have fed this food will know what to look for.
