I suppose that when Hill's sells raw pet foods, that Dr. Towell won't be so blind and misleading about raw meats, no matter if for human consumption or pets...

Maybe PetConnection will offer the Doc some enlightenment to Towell's one sided- pfc influenced "information"...

http://www.petconnection.com/blog/

Common sense doesn't appear to be a required resume ingredient for employees/mouthpieces of pfcs, some vets and seriously absent in the FDA/CVM/AAFCO, PFI, AFIA, NFGA etc....

Oh... and as far as "only one commercial raw cat food diet has passed AAFCO feeding trials" - one has to ask how that can be so negative or imply quality of product or quality of the trials. (Another PFC/AAFCO/Vet myth?)

The missing statement is that one official document says only 18 states adopted the AAFCO standards. Another missing statement would be that the feeding trials aren't exactly a good measure of quality...especially with the loopholes and science manipulated by the PFCs..

Now, if the industry were regulated, the loopholes for feeding trials closed, that nutrition was clearly supported by unbiased science, and with real laws and enforcement, it might be a different story.

This article is clearly of pfc/industry incestuous origin. (If we realize that we can make homemade pet foods that are safe & nutritious, then they'd all lose money - the vets & the pfcs)

and Melamine took them by surprise!
 Angry
they don't mention cyanuric acid....and why didn't they know about melamine if these bigger companies are so much safer...melamine and CA seemed to be the concoction of 2004 in Asia, maybe 2006 in China (as I just found that article) and then in Nov 2006.......

definitely an article to say all is well....they feel the hearings were a knee-jerk reaction....well I have a knee that is still jerking. Angry

There's place to leave an opinion about the article:

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/youropinions.php?associatednewsid=115688

I left one, but it probably won't be posted:

"Title:  No Surprise

The fact that pet food ingredients were contaminated with non-protein nitrogen sources, melamine and cyanuric acid, should be no surprise.

After all, the practice of using non-protein nitrogens (NPN's) to raise the apparent protein level of feedstuffs is not new.

In 2004, many pets in Asia were sicked and killed, and a lawsuit was brought in the U.S. Western Federal District Court.

Also, the pet food industry's standard "protein" test is 100 years old, and doesn't really test for protein.  Instead, it tests for nitrogen, and then infers the amount of protein.

A 21st Century global supply chain requires proper risk assessment and robust QA/QC procedures.

The Pet Food Recall of 2007 was a perfect storm, but one that pet food companies should have seen coming."

My knee is still jerking too.

Here we go again with the scare tactics; guess the PFC's don't want competition. If they posted those 20 diets - how many more consumers might they lose. It's all about the money.

There are worse images of what 'complete and balanced', sanitized food did to pets, but this one is just Poco's opinion of some of the disingenuous spin in that article.

Wink  That was the gentlest picture I could find.  I found this, too.

Multistate Outbreak of Human Salmonella Infections Caused by Contaminated Dry Dog Food --- United States, 2006--2007

I wonder if Ekedahl has our best interests at heart touting the FDA?

""Pet foods, which are already among the most highly regulated food products, soon will be under new federal regulations as the FDA expands its role in regulating pet food over the next two years," Ekedahl says. "The FDA needs to be reinvigorated with additional funding so it can fulfill its current charge, like ensuring the safety of imported food, while it takes on expanded responsibilities for pet food." "

Makes me worry about this quote:

""Pet foods, which are already among the most highly regulated food products..."

What on Earth can he possibly mean by that?  If that is the case, no wonder we are in such trouble.  Roll Eyes
