Spectrum Brands, Inc. F4Q08 (Qtr End 9/30/08) Earnings Call Transcript

http://seekingalpha.com/article/105604-spectrum-brands-inc-f4q08-qtr-end-9-30-08-earnings-call-transcript?page=2

"Turning to our global pet business, with the distraction of the now terminated sale process completely behind us, our global pet segment grew sales 7.7% for the quarter to $159.2 million with strong gains in companion animal and European aquatics. Our top line also benefited from pricing taken earlier in the year. With expanding market share and powerful brand name, sales in North American companion animal were up 13.6%. Our Dingo dog treat products continue to lead the way with sales up 38% year-over-year for the quarter.
Growth in this segment should continue as we continue to expand the product line and leverage the Dingo brand.
I’m also pleased to report for the first time in five quarters, North American aquatics saw positive year-over-year growth for the fourth quarter. Sales were up almost 1% reflecting a slow but stabilizing market.

Internationally, we experienced solid sales growth during the quarter of 11.9% and 6.8% in Europe and the Pac Rim respectively as we continued to see growth in aquatics in both regions, positive trends in Eastern Europe and the launch of companion animal in Europe which is now gaining traction. As you know, we invested significant marketing funds during 2008 to support the launch of the companion animal and are receiving good reception so far in the marketplace.

Overall, I’m very pleased with the performance of our global pet supply segment. During 2008, this team faced tremendous distractions but delivered very solid results. Full year revenue grew by 6% over 2007 and was up 3% excluding foreign exchange, led again by companion animal which was up an impressive 11%. Looking ahead to 2009, many of the input costs in this business are still at relatively high levels. As a result, we’ve developed a number of initiatives, some of which have already been implemented, to streamline our organization’s structure and reduce overhead costs.

We expect that fiscal year 2009 should also benefit from pricing averaging approximately 3% across a broad range of products implemented earlier this year. Fortunately, pet products, particularly consumables such as dog treats, birdseed, fish food and so on, tend to hold up well regardless of economic conditions."

If they don't have Chinese melamine or salmonella in them, they might.

On the salmonella detention list since 2001--went on the melamine detention list early this year.

I got the above from a certain little birdie, but wanted to add this about Spectrum Brands:  Some years back, they bought out two local companies, Ray-O-Vac and Remington, which were doing well.  Local opinion is that they ran both into the ground.  I don't like Spectrum Brands for a lot of reasons.  They tried to sell off the pet product section to another company earlier this year, but the deal fell through.  Even more reason to distrust their pet products.

I USED TO BE a big fan of Dingo.......Hannah loves their products........until last year when I started seeing them come up over & over on the Oasis report.  Yuk!

Every Wallys & big pet store has tons & tons of Dingo products.  Wouldn't buy them if they were the only pet treat left in this world. Angry

When you say "Melamine or Salmonella?".......do we have a choice? Wink

Once the tainted pet treats surfaced never again bought any that were MIC or not organic, produced/manufactured right here in USA. Or I made my own with carob. Now carob I've seen has soy in it-yech.

I thought the discussion of carob taking place here deserved its own thread, so I have moved that part of this topic to a new one.
