This is the lab my vet sends blood work and urine too.  Just looked at their site.  This is from their June newsletter. Sounds like they are still seeing crystals, but less.

Here's an excerpt, remainder of report at link.  It's a brief report.

http://antechdiagnostics.com/clients/antechNews/2007/jun07_02.htm

At Antech's laboratories, these round, yellow crystals from urine sediment have been seen in 20-30 cases a day, however the numbers of urine samples containing these crystals are rapidly decreasing. Now we see less that 10 a day. Follow up on these cases revealed that these dogs and cats have been on the recalled diets.

All I can say is thank god I got off the Gwainy Cwap food.  And thank goodness for the boards on EBay which led me to this site.  I don't know what I would have done if I'd ignored the whole thing (I'd feel really bad about poisoning kitties).

Wow, that's an amazing number, makes me think the estimates are low on numbers of pets affected.  Someone should do a follow up to see what happened to each case back at all the vets' offices.

As a point of interest that I observed. Yesterday when we brought Piya in because of the blockage, one of the first things the vet did was take a urine sample and analyze it for crystals, blood etc.

Apparently this is now cause for concern. It isn't only us that have been "hyper sensitive" about this food poisoning, even the vets are testing first thing.

well that's interesting--shows there was a really widespread problem after all & many pets have been affected, unlike what some people would like us to believe.

I assuming you mean the fda, and the gov and the hypnotized public, would have us believe. Grin

That was actually the first thing they did, we walked her around outside so the vet could see the problem with her and she squatted and the vet got some urine. After testing that and removing the 'melamine' option, then we did the blood, xray etc. The first thing though was the urine.

This is quite a widespread problem, testing labs are still finding melamine, CA, and other noxious chemicals in food that people are sending in for private testing.

my friend had a check up for her 2 dogs before boarding (and after moving, so new vet) sometime in April (if I remember correctly) and the first part of questioning, even though it was a wellness check was about diet, food/water intake, etc. in a manner that was different from past visits. Granted the new vet seems very on top of things, but the focus was first and foremost making sure they weren't showing any signs of *food poisoning*. And my friend was feeding Nutro until all this came down. Thankfully her dogs were/are fine! Her one pup is around 15 and in great shape, especially since the food change! I just remember her vet visit because she was wondering if she was being hyper-sensitive or her vet was aware and on top of it Smiley

the internet is a wonderful thing. where else could we get Antachs results/info? if the gov had their way, no where. THANKS for the post JustMe!

db--do you have info on the labs still finding toxins?  that might be good for itchmo to post on front pages.

I just went through the pet food cabinet yesterday & found some foods that I would have liked to test but threw them out instead--one of the diabeties vet formulas - Purina DM, NB canned venison & pea for cats, Natural Value cat canned, NB dog treats, NB venison & rice dry for dogs that I bought in March & they ate for a short time & started having digestive problems so I quit with it.  These foods were probably all produced last year, so it would have been interesting to see if they had any traces.  Too bad I'm not rich.

I believe that is where I saw it last week or so. Would have to do a search either here on the forum or on the main itchmo site to find them. Or maybe petconnection.com would have them.

Brain overload, too much info, head exploding.

Does anyone know yet how often we need to test our pets urine?  All 3 of my cats had eaten some recalled food and I had their urine tested in March.  1 of the 3 was tested again in May - Not sure when to do follow up urine, so I thought I'd ask.

Lisa

What did all the tests show, were they clear, have some crystals??

If they showed clear I would think you would be fine, if they had some crystals I would think that you would test every 30-90 days until clear.

IMO

My one cat ended up having a UTI - not sure if she actually had the crystals present.  She went on Clavamox, was eventually retested and is okay now.
