You are correct, Spartycats, thanks are in order.

If only there was, in fact, a requirement that all consumer complaints to companies especially in the food industry, human and pet, were filed and publicly accessible somehow, as well as company responses thereto.

I also want to thank haloemployee for posting.  We have all said at various times, that we wish employees of these companies would step forward if they knew more and it appears there is finally someone with the integrity to do that.  I think the "day one" statement that was made in that notice didnt make alot of sense anyhow.  In the Pet Food Express statement, they said initial testing didnt reveal any problems but the food was withdrawn and further tests were pending.  So, to me, just common sense would say they couldnt know for sure there were no problems from day one as they were waiting on additional test results to be sure.

3cat, one of the statements you made about wanting pet owners reports of food problems to pet food companies be accessible is something I totally agree with.  If there was a wishlist, that would be on it for me too, that they would have to maintain those records & that FDA could have access to them.

When a company withdraws food from store shelves, Im assuming store employees learn about it. If they learn about it and were using that food, would they continue to feed it to their pet?  I kind of doubt it.  So I just want the same knowledge they all have so I can take the food away from my pet.  Im sorry but Ive seen too much how pet food recalls and withdrawals have been handled just in 2009 alone and have personally experienced way too much when it comes to pet food problems to ever be able to go back to pre-2007 passiveness.

I also think its important to note that in 2009 there were several silent pet food withdrawals by other companies and it was pet owners that found out and put word out thru blogs and Twitter.  Prior to 2007 that would have never happened so we are watching much closer than we used to and are always on the look-out for problems.  And I dont know much about Halo's product, Im sure its fine but I thought Orijen was a good product too until I saw how they treated the Australian pet owners when they had their cat food problem.  A company can put prime rib in a bag but there is so much more and that includes their QC protocol, their treatment of customers, how they handle things when they learn of a food problem, etc.  I am hoping that the early warning surveillance system that FDA is trying to initiate will help towards some of this but I just dont know for sure..

Couldn't put that any better Sandi. Doesn't matter how good the food is if the QC & PR & CS are bad. Very disappointed in Halo, like Champion they had the opportunity to shine. Instead they look like another Nutro. No more of their freeze dried treats here.

Want to also thank the haloemployee for posting and I hope that anyone with these other 'best by dates' will post on here or twitter if those dates also had a malodor.

And 3cat put it so simply as to what we would like to find/see in a PFC.

Sandi k yes I agree 100% - we all want that same knowledge that the store employee has as their's is no doubt first hand knowledge.

leslie - yes this place gave itself its own black eye.

TO any PFC's, reps, etc who read this forum: We want honesty, no cover-ups, no holding back information on a food with problems, no silent withdrawals, etc. This is how you lose customers, not win their trust.

No one seems to be helping us get much further here as to odor producing ingredient. So at least here's the possibilities. Rotten meat, eggs, fats, veggies and/or fruits all seem to have the potential.

To add to 3cats summary of what the odor could be from - spoiled fish, alfalfa that is moldy (Diamond PF death of 100 dogs in 2005 from aflatoxin), rancid flaxseed, moldy fruit, vitamin's overloaded or lacking from batches.

Any more news on this issue?  As a user of this brand I have been watching this with concern.  I have a cat, not a dog but without knowing what caused the issue who is to say the same thing won't happen with the cat food.  If it was for human consumption you wouldn't be able to get away with that whitewash of a semi-hidden public statement.  Can you imagine if that statement came from the manufacturer of, say, baby formula.  "Well, you know, there are natural variations in the ingrediants and this batch just smelled spoiled, but our tests show it won't harm your child.  What tests?  Oh, we can't release that information."  That wouldn't go over for even a minute.  The public outcry would force them to be specific about the problem.  It's a shame we don't have the same standards for our animals as we do for people.

Welcome Cat-Man-Doo.

Animals are considered chattal and until classified otherwise no laws will truly protect them which is sad.

Hi, I’m David Yaskulka from Halo. We truly appreciate everyone’s passionate advocacy for our pets’ health!

That’s always our first priority as well.  Just to be clear, from day one we determined there were NO health or nutrition issues for pets. We’ve posted details on this web page: www.halopets.com/pfe

Please don't hesitate to contact us (contact info on web site) with any questions or concerns!

Whew this gives me a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. It's like deja vu. All the feelings from just over a year ago come flooding back.

This is absolutely none of my business as I don't live in the USA and the food is not available in Australia.

But tell me, are the PFC owners cloned over there in N America or is it just their responses in crisis situations that are cloned?

It's actually people like Haloemployee that should be cloned. That was a very, very brave act of great integrity and I take my hat off to you. God bless you.
