No excuse for Petco to have this problem, but I hope I can offer you guys some hope that this isn't an industry wide problem we have to add to our list of worries.  I have been in a couple of independent pet supply warehouses over the years and never saw anything like this.  My ex managed one of them.  I'm going to check with the owner of my local pet food store and see what her experience has been.  I know she's been to different ones than I have.

Welcome, bear!  Hope you find something good to feed your pack 'o goldies.  Sounds like your son is one of the many that will be hurt by this.  All for the want of a little effort to keep the place vermin-free.

Karen, before you get the pet food at Walmart - check out Trudy's latest thread!  She saw them pulling occupied mouse nests out of a sofa IN the store!

Note - I WOULD NEVER BUY PET FOOD AT WALMART (had to take time from reading to post this).  I was talking about supplies like Cat Litter and Cat boxes (no toys- I' ve learned to hand make safe kitty toys from On Demand).  I prefer buying all my supplies at the feed store, they are cheaper than Petco (so is Mud Bay).  My POINT  is that besides the contaminated facility issue, they are WAY OVERPRICED on just about everything they sell.

Well, one of the toys was using an old shoe string (they suggest string, but then you must put the toy away, cause the kitties can swallow the string).  Use old sock (preferably washed).  Crumple up Newspaper, put in sock (slightly loose for that crunchy sound).  I added catnip.  Tie up sock, and securely tie shoestring to sock (inter-weaving tie).  Walla, cheap and safe.

You can also use Paper Towels in Place of the newspaper (I think I did that)

I wonder what they would do if they knew about Wal Mart. the place where they were pulling out the [once alive] mice from the childs sofa at wal Mart is right beside the cat-dog- food ilse.
And every time i go to Wal Mart I come home with moths. i know a girl that works there, and She told Me they spray all the time for moths. They get in the bags somehow.  that's in the pet food ilse also. Huh Huh

Accompanied my daughter to Petco yesterday to pick up fish supplies... wandered to the cat food aisle and began picking up random kibble bags and sniffing them  Grin... they smelt like.... kibble.  Maybe the depot in Oregon had better sanitation?

More on the Petco Warehouse problem-

http://www.fox28.com/Global/story.asp?S=8534066

Fox 28, South Bend|Elkhart, IN

"While F-D-A and PetCo representatives say they haven't received any complaints about the pet food, veterinarian Sara Granberg says it could cause a virus.

""That can cause some kidney and liver problems.  The first signs we see of that is drinking and urinating more than normal," said Dr. Granberg.

"There may be some warning signs.  If you take a look at your pet food bag and notice any holes in it or stains on it...or if you open it up and smell an unusual odor...you may have one of those contaminated bags.

""If you are suspecting something...if you bought food from the store and your dog is starting to show signs, I would contact a veterinarian," said Dr. Granberg.

"PetCo representatives say they've fixed all the problems the FDA addressed in their reports and they welcome inspectors back to the Illinois warehouse."

Translation - they brought in some Ferals to eat/chase the rodents away (Just Kidding).  Roll Eyes

A virus that causes kidney & liver failure?  Does anyone know what virus that could be?

"if you bought food from the store and your dog is starting to show signs"

What about cats?  Doesn't it affect them too?

"US Marshalls and inspectors with the Food and Drug Administration seize a shipment and delivery from a Petco distribution center.  Inspectors say the Joliet, Illinois warehouse had a rodent and bird infestation near open dog and cat food containers."

OPEN containers?

"While Petco says they're not recalling any products just yet, Evans says it could happen in the future."

Ugh, recall it now if there is a concern!  This report raises more questions than it answers for me.  Thanks for posting it, Menusux

Menusux; thanks for posting.

I'm wondering too.... I can't think of any virus off hand, and the drinking more water and urinating more often sounds like a repeat of last years symptoms? I noticed that too - only dogs mentioned? seems with cats more sensitive than dogs - open containers? Wondering if the mice chewed the bags open and than contamination occured with "sewer water" -  or maybe the rodents took their poison into the bags to hide for future eating. If the opened bag smells? sounds more like a mold or bacteria..

Seems to me they should recall the food now and not take any chances - and my question; is that a shipment from Petco and a delivery from Petco?? or was that a shipment to Petco before it got into the distribution center?? lots of questions. I sure hope they notified the veterinary community.

I can only suppose that the virus can cause infalmmation of the kidneys and that can do permanent damage to renal nephrons... some viruses have been known to do that like the FIP and FeLV virus.

This is so worrying for those who have fed kibble bought from Petco --- and I have been one of them!

Do you suppose it's leptosporosis? Acccording to "pededucation.com"  cats rarely show signs of disease - dogs are greatly affected. And, rats and mice are carriers.  The first signs of lepto. can be increased thirst and urination. Lepto. causes kidney and liver damage.

Wish they would give us more information.
