Looks like that distribution center serves the middle strip of the country.  East & West coasters have yet to find out if their distribution centers are also sewer pits.  Wonder how they will serve those stores now??

Just think, this food will soon be showing up in the near future in your local grocery store chicken & pork meat counters!

Sorry about the hantavirus confusion - it is humans that need to be worried about it.  I think it's at the worst out west, the first diagnosed cases were from a big outbreak in AZ, but we have had some fatal cases up in W WA the past few years.

I wasn't sure how much it has spread, so that's good to see there are fewer cases back east.  TX & Kansas look like hot spots though.  Infected people end up with their lungs filling with fluid & usually have to stay in the hospital on oxygen till they fight it off, if the person survives.  It is carried in mouse urine & feces, and inhaling the dust & vapor while cleaning up a mouse-infested area can result in infection.

You know what would be really reassuring & a great gesture to show that what we think matters?   If the pet food companies & stores would post on their websites - "this is an anomoly, all our distrubution centers & warehouses are kept up to code and very clean.  Here is a photo of each of them."

After all, it does affect their pockets to lose our faith like this.

But, guess that would be too much to ask......

Feds: PETCO Warehouse Infested With Rodents, Birds

"Federal authorities said the warehouse on Rock Creek Boulevard in Joliet was overrun with birds and rodents, some of which had been gnawing at bags of pet food. During two inspections in April and May, investigators said they found animals and excrement inside, including 26 live rodents, 7 dead rodents, 30 birds, 1,300 rodent droppings and what appeared to be urine stains in and around stored containers of pet food.

"Kevin Whalen, spokesman for San Diego-based PETCO issued this statement over the phone:

""Since the last FDA inspection of our Joliet facility, which was earlier this spring, we've really acted aggressively to look at and address all the concerns raised in the inspections. We are fully committed to complying with all the requirements of the FDA.""

***gaggg*** poopies, urine and dead rodents...

what's that the man said?  "we're fully committed...?"  ... fully committed to the almighty dollar, yeah --- can't even invest some money to keep that warehose spotless and secure!  I have to break the awful news to my daughter who buys her fish foods from PetCo...

Now many of us will be thinking, "But how much better are conditions in other petfood warehouses and holding facilities?"

The BIG worry are the kibble bags.  The cans are sealed and water-proof, so even if urine were to splatter on them, what's inside will still be "clean."  Not so dry food in bags... perhaps those brands that use thick plastic bags for their kibble will be less susceptible... but only just...  Just one more item to add to my list of worries over commercial petfood:

1.  I worry about the sources of the ingredients in pet food - country of origin and the QA of that country.
2.  Integrity and quality of these various ingredients: are they pure, organic, fresh, unspoilt by mold, endotoxins, salmonella, e-coli, antibiotics, phenobarbital, etc etc...
3.  Are these ingredients in the correct and safe amounts when mixed into petfood - some can be lethal at certain levels (Vit D, etc).
4.  The processing plant: what's the QA like?
5.  and now - the new worry: transit and warehousing

I am getting very depressed

Not yet, but getting there (will take awhile for them to get used to the various canned feedings).

My last bag of kibble, not purchased via PetCo, was in the plastic zipper (its more expensive - but hey, peace of mind seriously noted).

And yes, this does make me want to question the viability of other storage methods.  But then with the Plastic bags, don't some other problems come into quesion?

Oy!

Ummm....

I don't agree. If the top of the can is contaminated then the food content can become contaminated when it is opened, unless the consumer plans to wash all the cans thoroughly. Few are likely to do that.

So do the stores themselves keep extra empty bags to repack food from damaged bags?  That would be worse than I thought!
