http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2008/NEW01854.htmlFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 19, 2008 "Today, at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Marshals seized various animal food products stored under unsanitary conditions at the PETCO Animal Supplies Distribution Center located in Joliet, Ill., pursuant to a warrant issued by the United States District Court in Chicago.
"U.S. Marshals seized all FDA-regulated animal food susceptible to rodent and pest contamination. The seized products violate the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act because it was alleged in a case filed by the United States Attorney that they were being held under unsanitary conditions. (The Act uses the term "insanitary" to describe such conditions).
"During an FDA inspection of a PETCO distribution center in April, widespread and active rodent and bird infestation was found. The FDA inspected the facility again in May and found continuing and widespread infestation.""We simply will not allow a company to store foods under filthy and unsanitary conditions that occur as a direct result of the company's failure to adequately control and prevent pests in its facility," said Margaret O'K. Glavin, associate commissioner for regulatory affairs. "Consumers expect that such safeguards will be in place not only for human food, but for pet food as well." "The distribution center in Joliet, Ill., provides pet food products and supplies to PETCO retail stores in 16 states including Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.
"FDA has no reports of pet illness or death associated with consumption of animal food distributed by PETCO, and does not have evidence that the food is unsafe for animals. However, the seized products were in permeable packages and held under conditions that could affect the food's integrity and quality.
"As a precaution, consumers who have handled products originating from the PETCO distribution center should thoroughly wash their hands with hot water and soap. Any surfaces that came in contact with the packages should be washed as well. Consumers are further advised as a precaution to thoroughly wash products sold in cans and glass containers from PETCO in the 16 affected states.
"If a pet has become ill after eating these food products, pet owners should contact their veterinarian and report illnesses to FDA state consumer complaint coordinators."http://www.upi.com/Business_News/2008/06/19/FDA_seizes_pet_food_products_from_PETCO/UPI-13561213907158/FDA Petco Seizure Story--United Press International June 19, 2008 http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/feds-seize-unsanitary-petco-products/story.aspx?guid=%7B96060B37-EF7A-4F9B-87A9-65F3F264A896%7D&dist=msr_1FDA Seizure at Petco--Marketwatch June 19, 2008 Please note--the food was not removed because of any suspicions that it contained anything toxic--the issue here is that PETCO's warehouse for its products was and is not kept in a sanitary way. For those of you who buy anything at PETCO and whose stores are served by this warehouse, I believe you'll need to try getting what you need elsewhere.

Disgusting to think what bacteria, toxic chemicals or animal droppings are lurking on the food wrappers, the bedding, the grooming tools......yuck!

Yuck! This is so awful. I refuse to shop at Petco but I understand for others it may be the only option.

let's see April...May ...June...hmmmm...only took two months...new FDA record (sarcastic tone ). Remember to wash those hands (too bad you didn't know in May and April) and food containers (IF you still have them )

We should be thanking the FDA for actually NAMING the offending SOURCE(S) instead of protecting them like they apparently did in the recent tomato fiasco. (sarcastic comment) Perhaps we forgot that the FDA is there to protect the corporations, not the public?

I just read from another list w/ permission to cross post: "At the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Marshals seized various animal food products stored under unsanitary conditions at the PETCO Animal Supplies Distribution Center located in Joliet, Ill., pursuant to a warrant issued by the United States District Court in Chicago."

I do applaud the FDA for sending a sanitation warning to this human garbage industry, even if a bit slowly, and a retailer, no less, who obviously deserved a raid.
However, I wish the FDA/CVM was more concerned with the overall ingredients of the product offered for retail in terms of chemical additives, by-products, bone and meat meals, mold contamination of grains, vitamin and mineral quantities and sources, non-protein nitrogen spiking -- the FDA could save many more pet lives by revamping and reforming AAFCO and refusing to accept the failed status quo which has caused so many pet food recalls in recent years and so much pet illness and death. Trash AFSS. Ban the use of bisphenolA in any food packaging material. Really reform pet food safety under FDAAA by starting over and doing your FDA job for the first time in a long time. I know; raids are much simpler ... but waste garbage product in pretty sanitary packages is still cwap awaiting its next pet food recall.

This has to make you wonder how many other distribution centers, for this company & all the others, have these same conditions. If there are rats & mice, there have to be many bags chewed open & spoiled by their feeding. Rats & mice don't just run around in warehouses full of food without getting into it.
Wonder if these are all the bags in the discount area of the stores with tape over holes, or donated to shelters. Yuck. My first thought is hantavirus, since that's on the upswing in some areas of the country.

Yikes, sharky! You mean people have opened the bags & found mice in them from the food being repackaged?

Okay, so are all the Petco stores being sanitized and posting warnings to wash the containers too? Something seems a bit remiss due the store in-stocks and backroom storage .. just this one warehouse and posting a notice....IMO it fell seriously short. Are there no more Petco stores in Georgia? That state seems notably missing from the region listing they published.... .. added: I really expected to see different stats on the hantavirus map... is there a more current map somewhere? It appears that humans are the ones at risk, not the pets, from hantavirus. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hanta/hps/noframes/epislides/episl5b.htm2007 stats over the listed distribution:Alabama, 0 Illinois, 2 Indiana, 2 Iowa, 0 Kansas, 12 Kentucky, 0 Louisiana, 1 Michigan, 0 Minnesota, 2 Missouri, 0 Nebraska, 7 Ohio, 0 Oklahoma, 2 Tennessee, 0 Texas, 33 and Wisconsin, 1 Hello? Colorado 55 California 45 and New Mexico 71
