On Salmonella Detention List since December 28, 2001.

The three Eight In One/Ecotrition products shown in the December 26, 2007 FDA Enforcement Report may still be on pet store shelves.  Eight In One/United Pet/Spectrum Brands has certainly been aware of a problem with Peidi for quite some time.  They have been on the Salmonella Detention List since December, 2001, and have been repeatedly been shipping toxic pet products into the US as Eight In One/United Pet/Spectrum Brands' supplier.  From the salmonella recall with the Dingo products in March 2007, to the refusal of the Chinese supplier's dog chews for salmonella on OASIS for June 2007, to the continual stream of toxic products for birds, hamsters, gerbils and rats we see on the OASIS Refusals from September 2007 on.

These products are contaminated with melamine, pesticides, and possibly other toxic substances.  United Pet/Eight In One/Spectrum Brands was surely aware that the products listed on the FDA Enforcement Report for December 26, 2007 had been detained for those toxins.  When they were released to them in error, they were also aware that none of their testing proved negative, thus allowing them to enter the market.  Yet they saw fit to take these items and release them for sale.

I used to purchase one of their Eight In One dog treat products--not Dingo.  When I learned their supplier for Dingo and other products was Pingyang Pet Leather/Peidi, I stopped purchasing anything from this company.

For those of you who have birds and need US-made treats for them, here's two links to PetAg.  If you can't find their Vive brand at your local store, you can order them online at PetAg's Outlet Store.

Trudy -
I am going to try to offer you some reassurance.  I looked at the the Itchmo article on November 3 because I remember that you responded about the vitamins because you were concerned.  You have to look at the LOT NO., and not the UPC code, because the UPC code is going to be the same on every bottle of a particular product regardless of the Lot No.  The UPC code merely identifies the product.  The Lot No. of the recalled vitamins was SZ16371.  At the time of the recall, you said that your Lot No. was SZ09271 and so was safe.  Do you still have that same bottle?  Even if it is a new bottle, if it is not Lot No. SZ16371, you are okay.  The information above is just a repeat of what was originally reported on November 3, 2007.  Check your Lot No. and let us know.
