Hi Suebeecron
You said:

I didn't really think too much more about it until I stopped at Whole Foods today and saw the Dogswell chicken jerky treats, and I thought, hey -- they love those things. I'm at Whole Foods so they must be high quality and safe, right? It never even occurred to me to look at the back of the bag until I got home.

Would you mind very much telling me what you read on the back of the bag please? And who the manufacturer was? By PM if you prefer not to go public with manufacturer's name (though I'm sure it would do everyone good to know  Wink)

Thank you
TCM

Welcome to Itchmo, suebeecron!  I was really surprised to read your post about Whole Foods carrying Dogswell too.  It kind of ruins their whole motto, doesnt it and makes you question the rest of the foods they are carrying.  If you get a response from Whole Foods and can post it or summarize it, I would love to hear how they react.  Ive read of some other people petitioning certain stores to not carry Nutro, etc so maybe thats how we can get pet food companies to listen or do right and that is to ask the stores we use to quit carrying the stuff from companies who dont want to seem to change their ways.....

I'll be stopping at Whole Foods this week and will check out the back of the bag of treats unless suebeecron shares the info before I go there.

ETA - Didn't have a chance to go by Whole Foods last week. I didn't forget.

On a side note while in Petsmart over the weekend took a look at the Waggin Train bag of chicken treats and its says Made In China. On the front of the bag was the circle with the words in it: Irradiated for Your Protection. Could not find a company name but stated it was based in the US. Another food blasted with radiation for the pet owners protection. If any treat is that lethal IMO, I would not want to feed it to my pet in the first place. With or without a side of radiation.

Thanks JJ that would be greatly appreciated. I'm working with the Aust Govt re  providing info to support the position of stopping the irradiation of pet foods (not just cat foods) all info will help esp if the bag you look at has been implicated in any adverse effects on pet consumers. Thanks so much.

I agree - I can't believe Whole Foods is carrying Dogswell when Dogswell is lying about irradiation and also about all of the fillers in their products. They call their products all natural. Look at the Catswell chicken - anyone with half a brain can tell that that's not 100% chicken. It's amazing that Whole Foods sells products that are lying about ingredients. This needs to stop.

dogzcatz,
Do you have more specific information about Dogswell/Catswell to share?  Although there COULD be a problem with this food, one cannot analyze it by just looking at it.  Any concrete facts you could share would be appreciated.

Can you tell me if the chicken treats were intended for cats or dogs or both?

Either way, because in a mixed pet household one would feed cat food to the cats and dog food to the dogs but when it came to the occasional treat tossing a few treats in a game of play with all the pets involved could well be the go, these treats need labelling to state that they are not suitable for cats. There is a good precedent here in Australia now for you to go to your authorities and lobby for this. If it would help I can email you some correspondence on this for authentication. Please PM me if you wish. Thanks again for checking and letting me know.

Went to Whole Foods and this is what is on the bag of Dogswell dog treats. Did not see any cat treats from Dogswell. (this is in no particular order, just from what I wrote on a scratch paper) Made in China, Cage Free Chicken, Distributed by Arthur Dogswell L.L.C., 1864 Westwood Blvd. Ste 350, Los Angeles, CA 90025. Real Chicken Breast Jerky w/added Nutrients. No By-Products, No BHA/BHT, No Antibiotics, No Added Salt, No Added Hormones (?), No Artificial Flavors, No Fillers, No Wheat, No Flour, No Corn, No Soy, No Sugar. 888-559-8833, info@dogswell.com, www.dogswell.com and under this was We welcome your comments. There were 4 different varieties. Did not see the Irradiation symbol on any of the bags.

Thanks for that JJ
On the face of it you would think it is a healthful snack - no BHA etc just chicken breast etc. But if it is one of the ones causing problems it just goes to show you can't trust what's on the bag (and didn't we Orijen buyers learn THAT the hard way - jeez)
One thing I will say, at least your pet food/snacks show the Radura symbol and/or the word "Irradiated". Under Australian legislation it is not necessary to label irradiated food intended for pets, only food for human consumption.
This is what we want changed (one of the things - the ultimate on the wish list is a total ban on irradiation - a big ask and something that goes further and far higher than just our individual sovereign governments). This is what makes me so despondent and concerned.
But that's no reason to give up the fight, it just needs taking to a different level, step by step.

If you come across any more info do please pass it on and thanks again.

Look at Dogswell's website. They clearly state there is "no irradiation", but the factory Dogswell buys from only ships irradiated product. This is really dangerous for our pets, and I'm sure Whole Foods has no idea that Dogswell is lying. All they need to do is contact the factory and they'd find out that all product ships with irradiation.

Also - the Catswell thing is really worrisome. Look at the product - it's not at all pure chicken. It's definately filled with chemicals and preservatives.

dogzcatz,
You have posted similar statements on a few threads here, but they don't represent facts unless you can provide concrete evidence to back them up.  As I said previously, there is no way to look at a product and tell what is in it.  If you have a problem, have it tested and post the results here for everyone to see.  I don't use these products, but I know the members of this forum would be interested in any information you can give that backs up your statements.
