Pet Food Recall, but Still Selling Food

""Salmonella isn't something you want to mess around with and it could kill and the fact that they were continuing to sell even after I told them they didn't seem like there was any care or concern about it

We told you last night about a food recall that could affect your cats and dogs. We talked to a family who's been feeding their cats with this contaminated food, because they didn't know.

"There is a long list of recalled pet foods that could make your animals sick or even kill them. After hearing about the recalled food the family returned it to the store only to find it's still on the shelves.

"Tainted pet food with possible signs of salmonella has prompted a national voluntary recall. There is a list sent to all vendors to clear their shelves, but careful, some stores are still selling those products.

""We took our bag of cat food back to Walmart and told the customer because the cat food was on recall. We went back to find a different brand of cat food because we needed some cat food and we found that there was bags and bags of this still being sold on the shelves," says Jeff Metcalf.

"More than a dozen brands are recalled including pedigree, country acres cat and dog food, and even the special kitty that the Metcalf's purchased.

""I was a little surprised. How many people maybe didn't catch the news report? I didn't think it was right that they continued to sell that to unsuspecting people who may not be aware of the recall," says Metcalf.

"Other pet owners called Eyewitness News to say the same thing happened to them.

""In some sense I can understand these things happen. On the other sense it's irresponsible not to react promptly to those things," says Metcalf.

"According to local pet clinics, this could make your animals sick, but it could also be life threatening to your family if they get there hands on contaminated pet food.

""Like the lady I told at Walmart and she asked 'Did your cat eat any of it?' and I said yes, and she said, 'Well, I hope he's okay,' and I said me too because I don't think Walmart can afford to buy me a new cat," says Metcalf.

"After speaking with Jeff and his family I went back to Walmart, sure enough they had shelves full of this Special Kitty Food. The manager says they will clear the shelves as quickly as possible."

Whatever happened to the auto blocks on the UPC codes?

I wonder if the confusion may be that ALL of this food is not really being recalled - just those from that one plant with the very specific code under the Best By date.  If someone only looks at the name of the food and doesn't check that specific number, they may assume it is recalled when it is not.  The UPC code would be the same regardless of what plant it is made in because that code is just specific for the product itself.  Not every state is affected, so I can see how this could be confusing.   Undecided

I would also think its very possible that the food being referenced in the article is recalled food and its not being taken off the store shelves.  Its not the first time that stores didnt remove recalled pet food or if they did, only for it to turn up later on back on the shelves.

Sandi could this quite possibly be the food that no one ever heard of being destroyed from the original start of the recall last year? Might it possibly also have been re-packaged and put out as new batches when it may well not be? That was 60 million pounds of food - lotsa money lost if they couldn't sell it,  but we do not know for sure if it was ever destroyed now, do we? Is this 2007 all over again? Isn't this how it started with a few companies, then a few more, then more and more and more til our heads hurt from all the melaland food recalled week after week?

People should not relax and feel comfortable as it what they probably want us to do and go back to same ole same ole. The reports now state the food can make the humans ill also not just the pets.

I was at 1 feed store and 2 grocery stores in NJ today & none of them had been notified. Since the Pa plant is in the next state its hard to believe they didn't get food from there. My neighbor checked the farm & tractor store & they had been notified.

It doesn't help that it seems kind of difficult to determine if which bags are part of the recall.  Are all the stores going to go through carefully and check each bag to see if it's a problem bag?  I wonder if they can program their checkout scanners to reject bad bags like they did in some stores with other recalls.

We have another report re: the recalled Mars foods:

http://www.wsls.com/sls/news/local/article/pet_owner_wants_a_refund/17795/

WSLS-TV Roanoke, VA September 19, 2008

Pet Owner Wants a Refund

"Angel, Bear and Buddy are three dogs that pretty much live worry free.  They spend their days outside and of course the three seem to love their family and the feeling is mutual

"With all the pet food recalls in recent years, owner Steven Viar’s ears perk up when he hears the latest round and on Tuesday that’s what he saw on WSLS.

"He checked the numbers on the bag.

"“The codes matched up, so we stopped feeding the animals the cats and the dogs that brand food,” Viar said.

"On Friday morning he drove to Kroger where he bought the pet food and to his surprise left with what he came to return

“"They looked it up on their computer system and had no call backs at all on any pet food at this time and they will not refund my money for my pet food,” said Viar.

"When we stopped by employees remembered Viar trying to return the food, but was unaware of any recent recalls.

"The store manager says his employee made a mistake, because she should have taken back the food without any question.

"Either way Viar isn’t going to give the food to any pet of his.

“"I’m not going to feed them something, take any kind of chance and make them sick and hurt them and kill them,” he said.

"WSLS spoke to a number of stores in the area.

"Petsmart, Petland, and Food Lion, were aware of the recall although it did not apply to their products.

"Wal-Mart has pulled all recalled pet food from the shelves and will refund any customers who have bought them.

I was back at the Acme yesterday am & they have now been notified. Don't know about the other stores I visited earlier in the week.
