Syracuse.com May 11, 2010

New Dog Daze pet food pantry cares for animals affected by recession

"Ruth Sturgis loves animals.

"When she learned that in 2007, at the start of the recession, rescue groups received 4 million animals from Americans who could no longer afford their care, and that rescue groups anticipate 10 million animals to be abandoned this year, Sturgis was amazed.

""Those are staggering numbers. I said 'I've got to do my part.' "

"Sturgis and her husband, David own Dog Daze Healthy Pet Shop in North Syracuse. Now they also operate Hardeko Helping Paws Pantry, a charity that offers "free food and medicine to pets of proud people who have fallen on hard times.

""We're going to give you the food, and we're going to encourage you to pay it forward," Sturgis explains.

"Recently the pantry helped a family, whose mother and father had lost their jobs, continue to feed their dog. They hope people choose some volunteer work, or make donations to the pantry once they are back on their feet as a way to pay the good will forward.

"In addition, Hardeko is pairing with Dog Daze and food manufacturer, Vet's Choice to donate respirators specially made for dogs and other animals who are victims of fires. Some volunteer fire departments in Central New York already have the respirators, but many do not.

""We know we're going to need at least 10 of them, if not more," Sturgis says. "We'd like to cover a 10- to 15-mile radius from the store. We're just going to start from there."

"She said the respirator kit contains a training DVD and manual and a bright orange webbed leash for firefighters to use in leading dogs to safety during overnight house fires - when dogs may lack leashes or collars. It also has three sizes of masks. The smallest are designed to work for cats, ferrets, birds and other small animals."

How can you help?

Three ways:

Donate food, beds, crates, collars, any sort of pet care items to Hardeko; call 410-1278 for details.

If you know someone on the verge of giving up their pet for financial reasons, steer them to the pantry at 309 South Main St., North Syracuse.

If your volunteer fire department in Central New York lacks animal respirators, ask the department to notify Hardeko. The pantry will donate several respirators in the coming months.

Note the pantry is in the shop; the pantry's name is a combination of the Sturgis' 3 dogs.

New York-Barneveld/Holland Patent area-

http://www.wktv.com/news/local/-Sarahs-Pet-Pantry-becoming-a-busy-place-114370769.html

WKTV January 21, 2011

Sarah's Pet Pantry
First Presbyterian Church
7835 Church Street
Holland Patent
896-6372

"In these tough financial times, some pet owners are finding it harder and harder to find the cash to purchase pet food. As a result, more pets are finding their way to shelters. That's why Lois Reed of Barneveld started up Sarah's Pet Pantry.

"The pantry is run out of the basement of The First Presbyterian Church on Church Street in Holland Patent, alongside the Foothills Rural Community Ministry's Food Pantry. Reed says the pairing is perfect, "we're associated with the Rural Christian Ministry here, the Foothills, because we really couldn't do this on our own. We're under their guidelines, and they have the Foodbank, and they have certain guidelines they have to use to allow people to come in and get food, and if they have a pet, then they can come over to our little pet pantry area and we disperse cat and dog food.
"If you would like to donate pet food, snacks or even toys, you can do so at the first Presbyterian church in Holland Patent...you can also send a monetary donation to the church as well.

"Sarah's Pet Pantry is open from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on the first three Saturdays of the month plus the fourth Thursday of every month. The Pet Pantry allows families in need to choose food and even some snacks and toys for their pets.

"If you would like to donate pet food, pet snacks or pet toys, you can drop them off at 8297 Old Poland Road, Barneveld or at the pantry at 7835 Church Street in Holland Patent during regular hours. If you need to have a pick up, call 896-6372. Monetary donations to be used to purchase needed items can be sent to Lois Reed, 8297 Old Poland Road, Barneveld, NY 13304 or to FRCM, PO Box 156, Holland Patent, NY 13354. Checks should be made out to FRCM. It should be noted that the donation is for Sarah's Pet Pantry or for pet food on the check."

Below is what we require from applicants for pet food assistance:

? Completed HVPFP Application;

? Copy of proof of financial need (most recent tax return, copy of annual earnings through SSI, welfare, disability, or other hardship);

We only provide assistance to owners who register and humanely care for their pets.

http://www.hvpetfoodpantry.org/Want%20To%20Help.htm

To enable us to serve those who come to our door, we need a variety of types of food for dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and other domesticated pets.  To keep the pantry operating, we need funding. Here are some suggestions that would help us tremendously:

•      Become a “Pantry Pal” with a donation which will help us to buy pet food and cover the operating expenses of the pantry!

•      Host a fundraising event at your home – this can be very creative on your part!

•      Have a Hudson Valley Pet Food Pantry Day at your store with a percentage of sales benefitting the pantry!

•      Host a pet food drive or fundraiser at your school, company, house of worship!
