New Animal Food Pantry opens at Rolla Animal Shelter

Rolla Animal Control teamed up with the Phelps County Animal Welfare League (PCAWL) and Royal Canin, USA to open a new Animal Food Pantry at the Rolla Animal Shelter located at 1915 Sharp Road in Rolla.

The Animal Food Pantry officially opened to the public on Friday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Rolla Animal Shelter, and will operate strictly through donations of dog and cat food from Royal Canin, USA and donations to PCAWL.

The Pantry will be available to pet owners who have fallen on hard times, the elderly and disabled. Only qualified applicants, who meet the financial and residential guidelines of the program, will be eligible to use the Animal Food Pantry. It will be open only to citizens living in the City of Rolla and Phelps County.

"Due to the economic times we are experiencing, more and more individuals are dropping off their dogs and cats at the Rolla Animal Shelter," said Inge Wilson, Rolla Animal Control Manager. "We wanted to proactively respond to this situation, before escalates any further."

Wilson is hopeful that the Animal Food Pantry will not only prevent an influx of animals relinquished to the Rolla Animal Shelter, but it will also provide a valuable service to the public.

The pantry is scheduled to open one day a month, depending on donations, and the level of demand for this new program. Future dates and hours of operation of the Animal Food Pantry will be announced at a later date.

For more information regarding the Animal Food Pantry please contact Rolla Animal Control at 364-6995.

NORTHLAND PET PANTRY - GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THOSE REQUESTING ASSISTANCE
* One applicant per household
* The amount of pet food a household receives depends on the number of pets as
well as the availability of pet food at the time of distribution.
* We ask for a donation of any amount at the time one receives food. This should
be in whatever amount one can afford and is not required.
* Food is not distributed daily. Please contact us to verify upcoming distribution
location, dates and times.
* We reserve the right to refuse anyone under any circumstance, such as someone
who is a habitual recipient. We offer temporary assistance for feeding pets only.
* We ask for personal information when one applies but we do not share that
information. It is kept strictly confidential.
* No one in the household is to resell food or items provided by the Pantry. If we
find that any food or item(s) was resold, the household and all members will be
banned indefinitely.
* We consider special requests for certain formulas or flavors of pet foods but are
only able to give what we have at the time the request is processed.
* All potential recipients must come to our distribution site in order to receive pet
food.
* We reserve the right to make exceptions based on individual need.
* We are unable to offer pet food deliveries at this time.
* We are providing a service to the community and ask that recipients only take
what they need.
* We accept all kinds of pet food. By accepting food and/or services from the
Pantry, all household members, their friend and family agree not to hold the
Pantry, it's staff, volunteers and benefactors legally liable in the unfortunate event
the recipient's pet(s) become ill if the food upsets the pet's stomach.
* When one receives pet food from the Pantry, they should be aware of the
potential for stomach upsets with feeding their pet(s) a new food, since it is unlikely
the pet food received is the pets usual brand(s).

Connect MidMissouri March 12, 2010

ELDON, MO. -- "Doctors Kathy Bisges and Joann Kunz at Lake Pet Hospital are on a mission to help pets in Eldon and the surrounding communities.

""We pretty much maxed out as far as what we could do for the adoption and the rescue agencies around," Bisges said. "We do a lot of spays and neuters at low cost. But I wanted to do more."

"The two have created "AniMEALS Food Pantry," located on Highway 52 heading out of Eldon.

"They collect pet food at their office and in green bins throughout the community and hand it out the second Saturday of each month.

"The AniMEALS Food Pantry had its first distribution day last month. In just two short hours, they helped over 40 families in need of pet food and supplies.

"Kunz said with the economic downturn, there's no better time for a program like this.

""People are just really having a hard time just providing food and basic care for their pets," Kunz said. "So we're seeing a lot of people have to give them up for adoption at shelters. And there's people living out in the country that are finding pets just kind of abandoned."

"The AniMEALS Food Pantry is open to pet owners in Miller, Camden, and Morgan counties. The doctors have yet to turn anyone away.

"The AniMEALS Food Pantry will distribute food this Saturday, March 13, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Lake Pet Hospital.

"You can donate dry or canned dog and cat food, cat litter, other pet supplies, and of course cash if you want to make sure mid-Missouri's four-legged friends whether this recession with the rest of us.

StLToday May 22, 2010

"Pet lovers Sandy Lynn and Kylie Shafferkoetter kept hearing stories about people who couldn't afford to pay for cat food or dog supplies because of the tough economy.

"The longtime friends realized how agonizing it must be to part with a pet in tight times. They talked about the need for a pet food bank or pantry, where people in a financial crunch could get supplies for their furry friends.

"They eventually decided to give it a go themselves, and the result is the Bi-State Pet Food Pantry.

"For now, the pantry is in Shafferkoetter's basement and consists of a few bags of dog food and an assortment of other supplies. But the pantry's Facebook page is already linking supplies with cash-strapped owners through an active comments section.

"The pet food pantry has nearly doubled its Facebook fans in about a month, to 620. The goal is to help families in need of pet food, cat litter, dog collars, leashes, bowls or flea and tick medication.

"A pet pantry operates in St. Charles County, called Animeals, which opened in 2006 and is run in conjunction with the St. Charles Humane Society. The pantry is for pet owners on limited incomes. They have to provide documentation of their financial situation.

"Lynn, 38, and Shafferkoetter, 36, plan to set up a similar system of requiring financial documents to prevent people from taking advantage of their project."
