one way to avoid bugs is to get a small metal trash can with a tight fitting lid and transfer the litters to the can when you buy them. You can find various sizes sold for the kitchen. I keep all my grains and flours in containers for that reason. Haven't had any  bugs show up in ages. If the litter isn't sold in a paper type bag, you would be less likely to bring home hitchhikers.

So far the paper litter is going really well.  I can't believe how much easier is to take care of over silica.

I have a question.  My Mom would also like to slowly transition to paper litter.

I'm using one that is white and clumps but does not turn any color when there is urine (I can see that it is light yellow, and it is easy for me to see to scoop out).

However, my mom's eyesight isn't very good and I wonder if she'll be able to spot the urine clumps?

There are paper litters that turn blue (or other colors  ) when there is urine.  I can only assume that coloring isn't very healthy...but does anyone know?  I imagine it would be easier for my mom if she could easily see the clumps of urine, but I'm concerned about what is in the product to make it turn color.  Anyone know?
