RIP little angel Katey

« on: December 20, 2009, 07:48:08 AM »

I was at my corner grocery the other day and saw a donation box at the checkout with a newspaper clipping attached. I started reading it and then realized, part way through that the girl in the photograph was one of the vet techs at my clinic. I had read enough by then to get the gist of what was going on and went down to the clinic to make a donation and have a chat with my vet and Karina:

It turns out that Marvin seems to have some neurological deficit as well, so Karina is driving him one province over to the western College of Veterinary Medicine where he will be getting additional tests including an MRI. I saw his x-rays and this poor little guy will be needing major surgery to correct his limbs (all four). We have a board-certified surgeon here who will be doing the operation once he's more stable. He had a good day two days ago, but yesterday was having a bad day.

Please include Marvin in your thoughts and prayers so that hopefully, they can figure out what else is going on and help this pup be as normal as possible.

bug Thanks so much for spreading the word about Marvin. Year-round neglect is bad enough, but seems especially awful in the winter. Too many people are dropping animals off in the street at this time of year.

A group of us did a search yesterday for a beagle who had been rescued from an Ohio kill shelter and placed with a west end family. He jumped the fence on his first night. He was let out, off-leash, and part of the fence probably wasn't even 3 feet high. I don't know both sides of the story except that his adopters had not bothered to put up any signs, were too busy to do any searching and didn't want to upset the kids.

He hasn't been found yet. Although it's cold, it hasn't been snowing (knock wood) and he seems to be sheltering in backyard sheds in a ravine area with a creek. There's a steakhouse where someone's leaving food out back for him.

Can't get the little guy out of my mind, but it's overwhelming when you think of all of the neglect out there. I don't know how shelter workers and animal rescuers do it.

Shibadiva, it's a tough gig working at a shelter. I did it for four years and saw a wide range of reasons why animals were ending up there. From ones that were found to ones that had to come because their owner had passed away. Some in great shape and some in bad. It was sucking up much of my life and you do get desensitized after awhile, though you never wind up not caring. It really hits you once you take a step back and look at the years gone by. I hope you guys find this poor dog. I know the cold isn't as bad where you are, but he's in a strange place. I also hope that whoever finds him will keep it hush and get him a better home.

Oh, these poor pups.  I will keep them both in my prayers.

Adding my prayers that all goes well for Marvin.

The person(s) who did this - I ask myself always when hearing of such cruelty - how do they look at themselves in the mirror? Do they think to themselves "ah, job well done?" These need to be persecuted, oops maybe I mean prosescuted, (nah first one)  as if they had tortured a 'human' child.

How many of us at Itchmo, who love all animals with much compassion and caring, would like nothing less than to have 5 min. alone with these scum with a baseball bat to inflict pain so they can feel what they have done to innocent, loving, living animals of God.

Apparently they do not believe that god said "take care of my animals".

Sending prayers and good thoughts for both of these dogs. Hoping all goes well with Marvin's surgery, and that the lost dog will be found.

Many people out walking with their dogs this weekend. It was a reminder that there are good people and loved dogs out there.
