I am just curious how many animals everyone has?? I am beginning to think we are just crazy. We have 4 cats and 2 dogs (one lab and a 8 week old golden retriever). That makes 6 animals! And we havent even started having kids yet! Shocked

So you DID get your lab a playmate, lacy!!  How is it going?  Any cat problems?  How are the 2 pups interacting?  An 8 week old pup will be easy to train to the house rules, so I'm sure everything will settle down just fine.  When they are about 6 years old.

I'm even nuttier than you--I have 6 cats (ages 8-12) & 3 dogs (2 big 2.5 year olds & one little 11.5 year old).

I always say I have 2 cats that I adopted & 4 more that I'm permanently fostering for the rest of their lives.  Which is actually true since I DID intend to just foster them as kittens until adoptable (then when they spent a few days at my house they became mine of course).

And hey, the small dog is a quarter of the size of the other two, so I could just say I have 2 cats & 2.25 dogs.  That sounds better.

Obviously I live with five cats. CJ is the grand old ladycat of the bunch at almost 12 years old (in February). Anyone who has followed my posts knows that we never thought she'd survive to see 11 and she's almost 12! She's a brown tiger/calico ~ I'm certain it's the calico attitude that has kept her fighting! Jess is a catboy, 7 years old. He's a buff and white tiger. When I fostered him 6 years ago (he crashed at the humane society) I KNEW he wouldn't be going back. The triplets are all black and white 4 year old catgirls. Cassie and Gracie are long haired tuxedos and Rascal is a medium haired "cow" kitty. I fostered them (and mom and two more sisters) from the time they were 3 weeks old. When it was time, mom and the other two were adopted, but my three were supposed to go back . . . didn't happen. They usually get along very well, but Jess gets after Gracie from time to time and CJ ALWAYS reminds the others that she's the alpha! (Geez, I thought I was the alpha)
Probably more than you wanted to know. I have fostered many others but these are the ones who got to stay.

5 cats and a big community fish tank.  I love birds and rodents too, but realize they would not be a good fit in my predatory household.  So I make do with feeding the outdoor wildlife and watching them.  I like dogs but my husband doesn't, so we have never had any.

Lacy, We have two goldens -2 1/2yo (Harry and Lucy)
one kitty - 14yo (Smudge) Calico and angel Jessica who was an orange and white tabby-rescued from side of road (or stolen--we never figured it out)
two "fancy" rats - 2yo I think - (Heroin Bob and Anthrax)  (they belong to my daughter and are white-I really don't like the names much but I wasn't consulted Roll Eyes)

and   two with hands -age 21 and 26!  - the least obedient!!

edited to add angel Jessica----I felt like someone was missing

Oscar

« Reply #10 on: January 11, 2008, 07:36:36 AM »

We currently have "only" three cats - the smallest number in many years. Our oldest (12-13), Oscar -an orange &white was given to me by a friend at work who would have otherwise brought him to a pet shop (eek!). Hes the alpha I call the "thug". The middle one, (8 -9),Amir is a huge orange tabby adopted as a kitten from a no-kill shelter. He was dumped on their doorstep in a box and has had issues of trust and food. The youngest (6-7), Casey, is a buff tabby and a real mellow creampuff adopted from a different no-kill shelter. He has food issues too, but I don't know his full story.

Thanks guys! I dont feel so crazy now! I love hearing all of your stories! I guess just friends and family who have just one pet make me feel like Im nuts when they say "How many animals do you have NOW?" and things of that nature. All of you guys made me feel much better!

Petslave you sound just like us! I rescued our newest kitten thinking I would find her a home and fell madly in love with her so I couldnt let her go. She is almost full grown now and the smallest cat I have ever seen, so I always say we only have 3.5 cats. Then my husband argues that we have a maine coon and he counts him as 1.5 so it all equals back out to 4. Haha.

Yes we did get our Lab a playmate!! Things are a little crazy right now. She chases the cats and trys to nibble on them so Im trying to teach her not too, cuz that is something that REALLY bothers me. But on the other hand she slept next to one of them the other day, so thats good.
Our lab is WAY to rough with her. She doesnt mean to be, but I guess being 9 months herself she just wants to play. BUT the puppy is vicious. She attacks, growls, snarls, and bites.
The Kennel is a completely different story. She HATES being in there. The sounds she makes I have never heard any animal make in my life. Then she turns crazy attacking the cage with her teeth and snarling. I definitely think she is going to be a handful. I am trying to keep in mind that she is only 8 weeks and hopefully she will grow out of it!!
I guess my vision of happy dogs keeping each other occupied with have to wait until they both get older!!

Crazy in only having one pet! Grin

I have 3 cats and a dog.

Badness #1 cat - black and white tuxedo medium furred girl, 8 years old.  She is the real head of the house.  We all obey her.
Scrappy #2 cat- blue and cream dilute tortie, with tortitude to match
Tucker #3 cat - 18lb classic tabby boy.  He is a lover not a fighter.
Daisy - the dog, chi/doxie mix, 16lbs of precious girl.

That is one of the reasons I come to this forum too.  The average person for some reason seems to find it scandalous that I have "all those cats."  Here, I realize that it's a normal kind of thing, and can talk about it with like-minded people.

Glad you decided to get the pup; have fun!

I would love to have more than two cats but seeing how my other half is allergic to dogs and cats, 2 is all i can get away with and they came with me when we met.

Infact my dream would be to run a big no-kill shelter and keep all the furbabies safe and sound.
