RIP little angel Katey

I had gone into a new franchise location of a popular pet store in my city (6 or so outlets). Their shelves were fully stocked -- all with food that was not so fresh. I think the other outlets sent this one their almost-expired products because it's a not-so-well-to-do end of town. I found two bags of a food whose formulation, subsequent to these bags, had been changed and my cats liked the original formula. I considered myself lucky. One of the bags had a small hole in it and the expiry date was 3 months away. I brought the bag up to the register and told the cashier that the contents would be oxidized and no good by now. She thanked me and put the bag aside.

The next time I was in the store, the stupid bag was back on the shelf! I pulled it off again. That so-and-so put a piece of tape over the hole and put it back out. This time I was mad and I told a different cashier what I did the first time. I then asked if she would like me to take a big black marker and write "NO GOOD" all over the bag because that is what I would do if I saw it back on the shelf. She attached a note to the bag and set it aside. I'll have to go back one more time to make sure it's been tossed.

Just an aside on older lots of food. I purposely buy cans that are as old as possible (within reason) because then I'm ensured that they are not "suffering" from botulism. There would have been plenty of time for the cans to bloat. Not necessarily so with new production.

My little babies, you'll always be in my heart. Mom will see you later. Look after each other, ok?

I just got a notice from the online vendor apologizing & telling me their distributor sent them expired product & shipping me another bag.

I guess I'm about to find out if it was the expiration combined with the natural preservatives that turned the furkids against their favorite kibble .. & if they will accept it now.

Whole Foods Market in White Plains received the biggest fine, $12,250 for 156 outdated food items.

Boy is that annoying-disturbing.

Offy, I sure hate that you have had to go through so much trouble with this.  I hope your kitties will be happy with the new bad and go back to enjoying it.

Glad they are making companies pay fines for outdated product, but wish it didn't happen in the first place.  Company I work for is very stringent on date checks, which I like.  Sad that a person has to take hours to go shopping between reading labels for ingredients then having to date check everything they are buying.  UGH!

Alek0,

That really is awful, and what's more, since we live out of the States it can take so long to replace an order.  Sad

Just so you know, I still haven't found any good cat stores to recommend for your Japan trip (at least in Tokyo, though I guess you know that, since I'm always ordering from the States/Hong Kong).  Have a safe trip in and if you have some time, give me a ring!

I wonder if you'll be bringing an empty suitcase for Aixia...  Cheesy

Just a quick update, since I am in Tokyo and typing from a really tiny comp.

Petsage promptly responded, distributor problem, offered 15% discount, and said it is OK to fee for about 2 months after expiry if kept sealed in the fridge. I will still donate excess bags, hopefully order from ONP will arrive Monday.

August, in reent months I have started ordering half of the quantity I want from ONP and half from Petsage to avoid problems if one of the shipments is delayed. Last order of Ziwipeak from ONP was with expiry date Feb. 2010, while Petsage was also March 2009 (which wasnt a problem at that time since there was enough time left).

this is why mom always goes to the pet store to buy cat food. so she dosent have worry getting  expired cat food. she can look at the dates on the bags and cans herself.

Unfortunately not everyone has that option. I'm lucky to have many independant stores near me ,2 of which will special order anything in. But many people have to rely on online ordering to get most brands. And a lot of pfc's & online sites do not ship overseas.
