Livonia-based Tail Wagger's Inc., is helping animals stay healthy by offering a series of four low-cost vaccination clinics.

All clinics run 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first is today, Sunday, Aug. 15, at Sheehy Animal Hospital, 1870 Middlebelt, south of Seven Mile, in Livonia. Other clinics will be held Saturday, Aug. 21, at Pet Food More, 15399 Merriman, at Five Mile, in Livonia; Sunday, Aug. 22, at Pet Food More, 3050 Union Lake Road, at Haggerty, in Commerce Township; and Sunday, Sept. 12, at Pet Food More, 1068 W. 14 Mile, Clawson

Distemper, Rabies or Bordetella will cost $12 each. Bordetella is recommended especially for dogs that frequent dog parks, boarding facilities and doggy day cares. All three vaccines are available for $30. Sheehy Animal Hospital also is offering micro-chips for $30 per pet and heartworm testing for $18.

No appointment is needed but an RSVP will help Tail Wagger's with planning. Pets will be taken on a first-come first-served basis. Zain expects a minimal wait time. To RSVP call (734) 560-4660 or e-mail vaccinationclinic@yahoo.com.

Michigan-Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties-

http://www.animalsbestfriendfund.org/home.html

Animal's Best Friend Fund
P.O. Box 443
Oshtemo, MI 49077
269-624-1090

cwk99@aol.com

Providing a subsidy for spay or neuter surgery is our main function. We also provide a limited feral cat program where we will pay for the neuter or spay and the felv/fiv combo test. Funding for this program is limited. Please call for details.

http://www.animalsbestfriendfund.org/provide.html

If funding is available, Animal's Best Friend will pay for part of your pet's spay/neuter surgery. The supplement amounts are as follows:

Male Cat   $30     Female Cat   $40

Male Dog   $50    Female Dog  $60

Each month ABF works with certain area vet clinics by authorizing the clinic to provide a certain amount in subsidies.

Call 269-624-1090 and listen to the recording to find out what vets have been selected and then make an appointment with one of them. Ask when you schedule the appointment if there is any ABF money left to apply to your pet's surgery.

Your best chance of getting the surgery subsidized is by scheduling your appointment early in the month when the clinics are first authorized to use the money.

Once a year we offer Oakland County residents a rabies clinic. Rabies vaccinations are offered at a discounted rate of $7.50, half the cost of a normal rabies vaccination. Residents are also encouraged at the time to pay $15, covering both the rabies vaccine and the licensing fee. Check our calendar page for the 2010 Rabies Clinic.

The Oakland Pet Adoption Center, along with the Michigan Pet Fund Alliance, is offering spay/neuter clinics for low income Oakland County residents in our service area for healthy, social cats between the ages of 12 weeks and eight years.

Along with the sterilization, each cat receives rabies and distemper vaccinations to help prevent the spread of disease in our communities.  They are also treated for ear mites, if needed, and sent home with de-worming medication.

Detroit Free Press January 3, 2009

"With financial support from the nonprofit Michigan Pet Fund Alliance -- which Obrecht helped found -- and the Michigan Humane Society, the center schedules events to help low-income residents get pet care. Qualified pet owners can have their animal spayed or neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas and ear mites, and even have their animal's nails trimmed.

""They pay $20, but they get about $200 worth of service," Obrecht said."

Traverse City Record-Eagle January 16, 2010

"At MSU's Veterinary Teaching Hospital more and more pet owners are looking to the Lucky Fund, causing the fund to rapidly decrease, said hospital director Pat LeBlanc. Named after an unidentified dog that was struck by a car and treated with community contributions, the fund helps subsidize veterinary bills for owners who can't afford care and can't obtain credit to finance it."

Contact the hospital for more information--nothing on their website about the fund.

Traverse City Record-Eagle January 16, 2010

""There are people making life or death decisions (for their pets) every day because they don't have money," said Banfield Pet Hospital manager Cyndie Bobier. Like other veterinary clinics in the area, Bobier said Banfield is doing what it can to help, from calling pharmacies for free medications and giving other meds at cost, to making house calls, to waiving some of its fees.

"The hospital also holds low-cost walk-in "wellness hours" from 2 to 4 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday, offers "Optimum Wellness Plans" which provide free office visits and discounts on preventive care, and works with Cherryland Humane Society and other agencies to access emergency funds and find alternate placements."

The city of Southgate is offering discounted pet vaccinations, as per a news story in the Southgate News Herald May 6, 2010.  The problem is that when you try to read the story in the Southgate News Herald, there is a virus connected with the page.

Suggest calling the city's Animal Control for information about the discounted program as it doesn't appear on their website.

Grand Traverse, Benzie, Leelanau, Kalkaska, Antrim and Wexford counties

http://www.helpingownerswithpetexpenses.org/index.html

http://www.helpingownerswithpetexpenses.org/contact-us.html

H.O.P.E. : Helping Owners With Pet Expenses
P.O. Box 184,
Acme MI,  49610
(231) 631-7222 (Please do not call after 6pm unless it is an emergency)

We seek to provide temporary pet food assistance with donations from our pet food pantry. We also seek to provide medical care for pets when pet owners are faced with unexpected medical problems in which not treating the animal would result in serious injury or illness.

In most cases, we will not approve spay/neuters, vaccines and routine exams. We also do not approve already incurred vet bills. We want to help the person who is faced with a temporary crisis and otherwise would have nowhere to turn to ensure the health of their pet.

We serve Grand Traverse county only at this time for our pet pantry. However, for vet care, we will take applications from the counties of: Grand Traverse, Benzie, Leelanau, Kalkaska, Antrim and Wexford.

GUIDELINES FOR APPROVAL:
1. MUST LIVE IN ONE OF THE COUNTIES LISTED ABOVE

2. We do not help with spay and neutering ( unless it is a medical reason or the pet will have to be surrendered if not neutered, or due to behavior problems). We do not assist with vaccinations or routine worming etc.

3. We assist with sick, or injured, pets in pain or if you can't get them to the veterinary you will have to relinquish them in order to get them medical attention.

4. Low income, poverty level senoir citizens on a fixed income, disbled pet parents, or situations that have suddenly lowered your income like being laid off, losing job, unemployment ran out, unexpected costs that were not expected.

We try to help people that have been responsible pet owners and have had financial difficulties that make them suddenly in need of help.  However, our main concern is the pets.

6. We do not help with stray cats or newly acquired pets that you cannot afford.

7. You need to have proof of your income unless it is a recent situation.

8.  If you are misleading or give untruthful information on the application you will be exempt from receiving assistance.
