MLive-Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan-

"GRAND RAPIDS -- The Kibble Konnection, a new pet food pantry run by the local Humane Society, is aiming to help owners keep their pets' food dishes full in these tight times.

"The local Humane Society is launching a new pet food pantry program called Kibble Konnection to help needy families and their critters.

"Eligible for the free dog food are those on government assistance, who meet certain income criteria or who have experienced significant hardships the past six months, such as home foreclosure, eviction or job loss, Self said.

"As many as five animals per family may be served with 5-gallon buckets of chow each month.

"The Humane Society hopes to establish another pantry in Lowell in April, Self said.

"To donate to the Kibble Konnection, drop off food to the site or make checks payable to the Humane Society of Kent County, 3077 Wilson Drive NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49534"

The general public can get their low-cost vaccines from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Families must have proof of low-income status to get the reduced cost vaccines.

"The following vaccinations, including a physical exam, will be available: Rabies for $15, distemper combo for $10 and bordatella for $10. Pet ID microchips will be available for $10 as well. Heartworm and Feline Leukemia/FIV tests will not be offered, HSKC said. Payments will be accepted by cash or credit card only. All cats must be kenneled and dogs must be on a leash. Service to aggressive animals may be declined.

"If you think you qualify for the Kibble Konnection program, you should fill out an application"

"or pick one up at HSKC (3077 Wilson NW in Grand Rapids, 49534). The application will need to be processed and approved, and it's likely too late to get it in for Sunday's food distribution (although Yuhas hinted that if she receives them Friday, she could process them Saturday for this week's event)."

A. There are a few ways to tell if you qualify:

2. If you receive disability or social security benefits.
3. If you receive unemployment compensation.
4. If you are homeless

Q. How do I receive pet food and supplies?

A. Pet Pantry has set dates, in different locations for what are called distribution days. These are days are for anyone needing assistance, to come and receive help that day. We are trying to keep our distribution days all in the same places each time, so that people know where to go and when. If you are unclear on where to go, please call or email us and we can give you that information. On distribution day you will be asked for proof of public assistance, disability, social security or unemployment. Please bring those with you, you maybe be asked to return with them in order to receive assistance. Help is available in emergency situations. We do not deliver pet food between distribution days as it can get extremely costly. Contact information can be found in the “contact us” portion of this website.

Youths help out local Humane Society: Donations sought for new pet pantry

"The Humane Society's Lori Zimmerman said that many food pantries have removed pet food from their shelves because of the need for space for people.

""Someone has to fill this need," Zimmerman said.

"She said that many people, especially those who are being laid off, are finding themselves in situations where they are no longer able to consistently afford food for their animals. The pet food pantry aims to fill this need.

"The Humane Society does not have a permanent space for storing pet food pantry items, but it does respond to people's requests. The Humane Society can be reached at (989) 948-8804.

Pet food and new or gently used toys, collars, leashes, dishes and beds can be dropped off at the following locations:

Michigan-Roscommon County-

Roscommon Animal Shelter
1110 Short Drive
Prudenville, MI 48651
Phone: 989-366-0260

Our shelter has recently started a food pantry for the animals. We were getting families having to make the painful choice of bringing in their pets and giving them up because they couldn't afford to feed them. The Roscommon County Animal Shelter would rather see these pets stay in their homes so we have started collecting dog food, cat food and kitty litter to give to families in need.

Contact them for more information.

Antrim Review

"But there are others that Walker and the other staff at the Antrim County Animal Shelter are seeing even more often. “People who give up their animals, much as they love them, because they just can’t afford the cost of them any more,” she said. “Some of them have big vet bills, others are in such bad economic shape they’re having trouble feeding their children, much less their pets.”

"So, with the go-ahead from both Brenda McGuire, Antrim County Animal Control Officer, and Antrim County, Rhonda Walker and the other volunteers at the shelter are doing whatever they can to help people keep their pets-by opening a pet food pantry.

“"We’re hoping to open it this week,” said Walker, pointing to a closet of the shelter packed with everything from oats to dog chow to kitty litter to gerbil bedding. “Our hours will be the same as the shelter’s-Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.”

"For more information on the Antrim County Pet Food Pantry, call the shelter during regular business hours at 533-6421. "

Michigan-Cheboygan and Presque Isle Counties-

Cheboygan County Humane Society
1536 E Hackleburg Rd
Cheboygan MI 49721

9 & 10 News December 30, 2009

"The Cheboygan County Humane Society says more people are coming to their pet food pantry for help. The shelter just got a lot of food donated for Christmas-time, but the director says this stock should only last through January.

"Instead of serving one or two people during the week, they're helping up to five people a day now. The director says this is a good thing.

""People who may ordinarily have to give up their pets are able to just come and get the food they need to keep them maybe just to get through the winter until their seasonal job starts," Mary Talaske, director of the Cheboygan County Humane Society, said.

"Any one from Cheboygan or Presque Isle Counties can use the pantry. To donate, just stop by the Humane Society."

I don't find any mention of the pantry on their website, but above is the news story saying they do have one and that more people are making use of it.  Contact the shelter for more information.

"When Covington School student Sophia Rotger, 9, heard a news story about families having to give away their pets because they couldn't afford to feed them, she wanted to help.

"And so The Birmingham Pet Pantry was created as an annual promotion to collect pet food donations from Birmingham area pet enthusiasts.

"Sophia and her mom didn't have to look far to gather other partners around the project. For distribution, Gleaners Food Bank connected them with Community Sharing, a pantry in its network that offers the option for families to shop for pet food.

"So far they have collected over 1,800 pounds of food and the donations will be delivered to Community Sharing on April 1."

Basil's Buddies

MI Live August 23, 2010

"Unemployed pet owners in Woodhaven, Michigan, who are having a hard time feeding their pets will soon have a pet food bank in their hometown.

"Patti Radakovich, co-founder and chairwoman of Basil’s Buddies, a nonprofit animal welfare organization, is planning to open a pet food bank at the Woodhaven/Trenton Animal Shelter, 21860 Van Horn on Sept. 1.

"The pet food bank will be open to Downriver residents that show proof of financial need — either a Michigan Bridge Card or an unemployment benefits stub. The food bank will be open one day a week and will grow as more volunteers come forward.  The facility will be open to Trenton and Woodhaven residents from noon to 5 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month.

"Anyone who receives the free pet food will have to volunteer an hour once a month, which is standard practice for pet food banks, according to Radakovich. Pet owners will also have to prove their pet has been spayed or neutered.  If a pet is not spayed or neutered, the owner can get food one time, but must have the animal fixed before returning for assistance, Radakovich said.  For more information, you can send an e-mail to "

Anyone who would like to donate dog food, cat food and/or cat litter can call 1-734-926-1098.
