Lansing State Journal November 13, 2009

"Each week seems to be worse than the last," said McAloon Lampman, shelter director. ICAC wants to stem that tide by reaching out to at-risk pet owners with assistance programs that will help those same families keep their pets.

Thanks to a collaborative effort with the city of Mason, Ingham County government, Mason Rotary Club and Kent Feeds, the ICAC has food in its pet food bank to help pet owners get through these rough times.

When shelter staff members ask pet owners what they can do to help them keep their pet, the answer is often simple: "We need food." Often they ask for just enough to get through the end of the month, or help with a minor veterinary concern, a doghouse and some straw, or help with spaying the cat.

ICAC found that providing pet owners with enough food to get them through a few weeks has helped take a huge burden off an already stressed family situation. For some families, it has been as simple as providing a doghouse or a bag of dog food.

ICAC is seeking additional doghouses and straw to give away to needy families.

The pet owner assistance programs are not funded with tax dollars. All funding comes solely from donations and grants.

Donations of money, dog and cat food for the animal food bank and dog houses are needed. To donate, call (517) 676-8373 or drop it off at the shelter, located at 600 Curtis St., or go to the Web site.

Spay and neuter programs.

Anyone caring for a dog or cat may use C-SNIP, but due to limited time, space and funding we give highest priority to financially challenged owners.

There may be circumstances which prevent you from being able to afford some or all of the spay or neutering cost for your dog or cat. C-SNIP may be able to help with some of the surgery costs in some cases. If you need such assistance or know of someone who does contact the clinic at 616-455-8220 or e-mail
info@csnip.org.

CAT SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC:
The Oakland Pet Adoption Center, along with the Michigan Pet Fund Alliance, is offering spay/neuter clinics for low income Oakland County residents in our service area for healthy, social cats between the ages of 12 weeks and eight years.

Along with the sterilization, each cat receives rabies and distemper vaccinations to help prevent the spread of disease in our communities.  They are also treated for ear mites, if needed, and sent home with de-worming medication.

RABIES CLINIC:
Once a year we offer Oakland County residents a rabies clinic. Rabies vaccinations are offered at a discounted rate of $7.50, half the cost of a normal rabies vaccination. Residents are also encouraged at the time to pay $15, covering both the rabies vaccine and the licensing fee. Check our calendar page for the 2010 Rabies Clinic.

No 2010 dates for either posted on the website yet.
