I did let Monde go today.  There may have been more that I could do or maybe I could have gotten her stable after a few weeks but I'm trying not to second guess myself.  I knew her very well and I had promised myself a long time ago I wouldn't put her through tons and tons of interventions and vet visits.  She would hate it.  Trying to understand for her, I'm not sure that 4 or 6 months of good life would be worth 3 or 4 weeks of extensive intervention from her POV.  For me, yes, I would gladly do that to have her a little longer. I would have been happy to do whatever it took - but I could not watch her suffer.  I have seen too many cases where people needed to let go sooner but didn't.  I'm always happy to hear things like catmom5's experience - I worried it would not be mine.

Just so you understand, her whole right side wasn't working.  If I supported her, she couldn't move her right legs to "walk" or put weight on them or really lift them or anything.  I figure she at at least 4 seizures.  I think she no longer had control of her bowels or bladder (I'm not sure if she was just too weak or what.)  I came in just after one of her last seizures and she was horribly miserable.  Panting and hot and scared.  She had pretty much stopped trying to drag herself around.  She was eating but not drinking.  I understand that seizures make them very hungry.

The vet said she was failing.  There was no reason, other than possibly blood pressure, that she should be having extreme weakness on only one side of her body.  Extreme weakness, yes, due to potassium deficiency, but only one?  None of us knew about her inability to walk when I took her in yesterday - my decision might have been different if we had.  The sitter hadn't seen her walk when she was there.   There was no reason in the blood work for her to be having seizures (again, aside from BP).

We had a good run.  I would have loved to have had her for another 5 years, but the almost 18 we had were precious.  The last one especially so because I really expected to lose her last winter so her good spring and summer were a gift to both of us.  I think next spring I will plant a flowering crab apple with her ashes.  It seems fitting given her torti attitude.

Thank you all for your support, prayers, thoughts, good words and suggestions.  They have been invaluable these past few weeks.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.

Oh Jen, you did what you needed to do because you loved her.  We can't do more than that but it is so terribly difficult.  Please know we're all thinking about you.   Cry

I am very, very sorry to hear that Monde is gone. Cry  Rest in peace, sweet, feisty tortie girl.

JenC, since you are new to the forum, you may not be aware of our custom for lighting candles in honor of those pets who have passed away, and for other concerns about our pets and friends.  Several candles have already been lit in Monde's honor.

Aww, I'm so sorry to hear it turned out this way Jen.  Rest in Peace little Angel Monde.

It sounds like she had a stroke, probably after she got home from the vet's.  I'm sure with all the years you shared, you understood what was best for her and made the right decision.  Peace and prayers to you in your loss and grieving.
