That which does not kill us makes us stronger

OK

Long story but here goes. About 11 years ago our vet called us and asked if we would be interested in rescuing a female Kuvasz 7 months old, the owners could not handle her and they were going to put her down in 3 days. So we visited and what we saw made us crazy. She was tied to a tree with a prong collar, the kids were tormenting her and she was nuts.

We picked her up the next day. Then we did some research and found out that she was a puppy mill dog, bred in MT, shipped to MO and then sold to a pet store in ILL.

She had been vacinnated multiple times (each time she changed hands they would vaccinate her), wormed over and over, and kept in a cage. Someone from the KCA had seen her at the pet store and informed the manager about what kind of breed this was and to definitely not sell this dog to a first time owner, which of course he did, a first time owner with 2 small boys, and no experience, told the owner that this was basically a white golden retriever.

So this person picked up the dog at 4 months old, had trouble handling her and then put her through intensive obedience training (with a prong collar) which I understand was very harsh. Keep in mind that puppymill dogs do not get handled, loved or have contact with humans so the bonds never develop. Then her only contact with humans was very harsh, use of the prong collar on a 4 month old dog is a bit extreme.

Her immune system was compromised from all the shots, when she got a set of shots from our vet she
developed parvo and almost died (at the time we had no idea that she had been vaccinated over and over, only after getting her health record and papers we found out). For one solid year she was constantly ill, vomitting, diarhea weekly, poor health. After tons of vitamins and care she finally got over that.

However never having bonded with humans she became a fear biter and would not allow anyone including us to handle her when ill. She would snap at us and bite us if we continued, but only enough to say "stay away from me, I don't trust you".

At the age of about 16 months she jumped on the screen door and broke the glass and cut her paw, which bled severely. She wouldn't let us do anything, and it kept opening up, she finally lost so much blood and was so weak that we could finally wrap it up.

At the age of 9 she developed pyometra, again we had to wait until she was half dead before we could bring her in to the vet. The next day the vet called us and told us (not asked) to take her home. She was feeling better and was impossible to handle.

So she went out like she lived, snarly and nasty, snapped at us and the vet, fighting to the end, she never gave up.

By the way, her parents were Hungarian, she had papers showing a long line of champions. From what we were able to find out, some morons got the idea to make money by breeding Kuvasz so they bought a pair of champions bred them and sold the puppies to puppy mills.

May they all burn in hell.

db, thank you for sharing Jasmine's story, although I know it must have taken a lot of courage to do so.  What a sad start she had in life!  Thank you for rescuing her, and giving her the best life she could have had.

Thank you for sharing Jasmine's story.  I know it had to be hard for you at this time.  You are such an Angel for giving her a wonderful life after such a cruel start in life.  I wish puppy mills could be outlawed.

db- Thank you for sharing Jasmine's sad story. Thank goodness you & your wife took her in and she knew love and caring. I agree with you about puppy mills, the owners should get the same treatment they give to the dogs they have.

It is for stories like this that I sometimes wish I believed in hell.  Angry

I'm glad you were able to rescue her and give her as much comfort and safety as she would accept.

Oh my gosh, db, bless your hearts for rescuing this dog and giving her all the care possible.

And good for you for telling the story and revealing another example of terrible mistreatment associated with puppy mills.

Poor Jasmine. Thank God that you and your wife were able to take her and give her love and care that she certainly didn't get early on. I believe that someday, somehow people will have to pay for what they do. And the people who let her down and caused her such agony and suffering will have to pay for that. And they should . . .

db, a very sad story for Jasmine's beginning.  I am so thankful you came into her life before it was too late and gave  her a good life, love and care that she didnt have in the beginning. Likecatmom5, I also hope what goes around, comes around for these people.

Thank you for sharing her story. There is much love in those words and my heart goes out to you on your loss. You have my deepest sympathy on the loss of Jasmine, one very special soul.

We have a secret, you and I,
That no one else shall know,
For who, but I can see you lie,
Each night, in fire glow?
And who but I can reach my hand
Before we go to bed,
And feel the living warmth of you
And touch your silken head?
And only I walk woodland paths,
And see, ahead of me,
Your small form racing with the wind,
So young again, and free.
And only I can see you swim
In every brook I pass...
And, when I call, no one but I
Can see the bending grass.

That's quite a story, db.  You and your wife are extraordinary
people to be able to work with these special dogs.

My Smorgi cat, born feral, is like your Jasmine, db, and like Pygmypets' poem. Only we will
know the loving beings that made such an impression in our hearts.
