Monday night, 9/14/09 I had to rush my precious Barkley Peeperton to the emergency clinic and have him pts.    Poor, dear Barkley had CRF, and I had been giving him lactated ringers for about 2 years.  He was 18 1/2 years old and an extremely sweet and gentle cat.  Barkley was born on Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.  He was a descendent of the Cuban Missile Crisis dependents' cats who had to be abandoned on the base when the dependents were evacuated from Guantanamo during the C M crisis.
When I was teaching on the base in 91, I befriended his mother, one of the then stray colony of descendent cats, and by the end of the year, she had had kittens, and when I returned to the continental US, I brought the whole family home with me.    Barkley's last surviving brother Scoutie passed last July 24 08, and so Barkley was the very last of my Guantanamo Bay cats.
We lived through many experiences and in many places together, over the years.
I feel as if a whole period of my life has closed now.  We were both old together for a while.  I am 77.
I pray he is now healthy and happy over the Rainbow Bridge and has joined the rest of his family there, as well as my other dear cats who have passed over the years.
Of course I still wonder what I could have, should have done differently, somehow in order to have him with me a little longer, but, but........
So this is a memorium to a very special, and precious, loving old man, my dear Barkley Peeperton.   His name is on the Rainbow Bridge list for the Monday evening candlelight ceremony, and thanks to Menusux, I have lit a candle for him on the candlelight website in our Itchmo group.

BW, I am sorry for your loss.  You and Barkley shared a great love.  I believe with all of my heart that little Barkley and his family were sent there to that exact place to give you companionship and perhaps help you through life.  I think our little Angels are sent to us in this manner to teach us many things we need in life to survive,  both emotionally and physically.  I know I have learned a great many things from my pets, things I rarely see in people of this age anymore.  Unconditional love, strength, courage, the ability to live day by day, worry free, along with many many more...  I know your little buddy will be missed, I am sorry for the loss of him in the physical, please know they await us in another place, much too beautiful to imagine.  God Bless, I too lit a candle for your baby.

What an incredible story! How wonderful a person you are to have taken the whole family home with you -- very lucky cats indeed. As a responsible person, you didn't opt to carry on the lineage, but instead carried on with the knowledge that one day, they would all go to a better place. I asked a priest one day, after my first husband died, if he thought those who passed on would remember us. Having lost his mother recently at the time, he had thought about that himself and was certain that not only would they remember us, they were living a parallel life and missed us as much as we missed them and they, too, knew that one day we'd all be reunited.

I was watching the Barbara Walters special with Patrick Swayze and his wife last night and the last thing he said was that he did believe the last line from "Ghost" -- that all they (the deceased) take with them is the love you'd given them. Barkley has 18 1/2 years of your love with him. He's a happy boy.

My little babies, you'll always be in my heart. Mom will see you later. Look after each other, ok?

Thank you 3 cat.  I also had 3 cats with kidney failure,  my Tommy, my Barkley, and my Scoutie.  They were all Guantanamo cats, all brothers.  I always thought they got the disease from the contaminated food, but of course I can't be sure.  Barkley lasted the longest.  First I lost Tommy, then Scoutie last summer and now Barkley.  I pray he is at peace and healthy again over the Rainbow Bridge.
Thank you again for your message.  Bless you.

Thank you MGT for lighting a candle for Barkley, and thank you for your message.  Yes, our dear pets can teach us a great deal about unconditional love and all their other many virtues.  You are so right.  thanks so much again.

Justme, Rom6, Meoli, JoMax and Bug, thank you all for your messages.  I know my Barkley appreciates it too.
I also watched the Barbara Walters special on Patrick Swayze and he and Barkley passed on the same day.  9/14,  a sad day.
That was indeed kind of your priest to tell you thatk Bug.  Very comforting.
Thanks again to your all.  Barb W

What a beautiful story of your rescue of a few of the GB cats, and Barkley's long life with you.  I'm sorry you lost him, but I'm sure you made the only decision that was right for him in his final illness.  Peace and prayers to you as you adjust to his loss.

I, too, feel like we are losing many of our pets too early because of low levels of poisons in their food in 07.  I think the damage was much more widespread than the "official numbers" show.

BW,

So sorry that your little boy had to leave you. You gave him years of love and care that he may not have had otherwise, had you not taken chosen to care of him and his little family.

Hugs
