catmom, GC felt the warmth of your arms, your tears and the kindness of your heart. You gave this catboy more love in his short life than he ever experienced. You spared him the horrors of his illness. You gave him a gentle passing to a Bridge where he will be greeted, where he will continue to feel love and where he will be well and free of pain and sickness. God Bless you catmom.

So sad that such a young cat was afflicted with both these terrible diseases, and so sick. I am glad that you were able to say good-bye to him in the way you did. I am sure he was able to feel your love.

Rest and be well and at peace, little wild boy. I'm so very sorry your time on Earth had to be so short. But at least you knew love, even if only for a short time.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words and prayers.
I think the hardest things were that he wasn't showing a lot of symptoms at this point - mostly really gunky eyes and that he had to spend his last days caged. I talked with the vet at length before we went ahead and let GC go about whether it was the right thing to do. There just aren't a lot of choices for these poor cats. The sanctuary that takes positives wouldn't take him with any symptoms and he would have lived in a room with other cats with an outdoor enclosure on nice days. I couldn't imagine that GC would be happy in that environment.
If I had not had any others, I would have brought him inside and taken care of him on his terms, but I do have others.
So the kindest thing for GC was to release him from a body that would sooner or later become very sick or life in a cage that would have been worse than death for him.
It's never easy to love them and let them go, but somehow we do what we have to do for them.
I so appreciate being able to come here and talk with you about these hard things. So many others, most others, just don't understand.

Catmom - I am so sad for GC's poor little life, but consoled that he had the love & comfort from a wonderful person who allowed him to be released with care and without the pain and horrors he would have known had you not helped. Run free little boy cat - play forever now.

Catmom, you made a decision that NONE of us envy you for having to make. It was the best and kindest choice for GC, but heart wrenching nevertheless. You are an angel for loving this catboy. He is now happy and free of illness, safe, warm and loved in our Saviors arms.

catmon, I don't know if this helps, but since GC was getting sick, he probably wouldn't have pulled through. Since he was so young and had both diseases, I suspect his mother passed them on to the kittens.
We had a litter come in to the rescue group I used to volunteer for, and they tested positive for leukemia. The foster mom had fallen in love with them, so she agreed to keep them for as long as they lived. We also checked with another bigger rescue group that had a leuk/fiv house.
They told us that when kittens are born with it, they almost never make it past a year, and those that do are usually gone by age two. Cats that get it when older have a good immune system so can live with it for years, but not kittens hit with it before they are born. All but one of the little rescue kittens died by one year. The remaining boy went to live at the other shelter so he wouldn't be alone. He lived another 3 months before getting sick and quickly passing on.

I brought GC home today. It feels right to have him here with me. He didn't have much in his short life, but he surely has known a lot of love in the past few weeks. I hope he knows that. cm5
