5Cat, this site was founded by Dr Remillard.....I remember a long time ago using it for KiKi when she was having IBD issues. It was very expensive but they were helpful. We ended up not using the diet because they had us adding rice and we had felt it was maybe one of the triggers for her but it actually ended up being fish. But this diet was specific for her so I dont know if they would add rice in every diet or not.....one page at their site that concerns me is this statement, it looks like their opinion is that soy, corn and wheat are OK?  http://www.petdiets.com/default.asp?Menu=Facts&Submenu=Ingredients&PageName=/facts/ingred.aspDo ingredients really matter to pet owners?
Yes, apparently they do. The pet food marketing teams are playing that card for all it’s worth and in any direction necessary to make a sale, hence the importance of naming the product. Also note the advertising statements that a product “does not contain soy, corn, or wheat”; such statements imply there is something wrong with these ingredients and hence the foods containing them. In fact, there are no problems associated with these ingredients unless your pet demonstrates allergic reactions to them. |

Something I saw looks like they use BalanceIt supplements.

A couple of freinds of mine each bought a recipe for their respective cats from this site. When they compared notes, they found the recipes they recieved were identical  Maybe they have a "generic" recipe for pets with no health issue like IBD, CRF, Diabetes, etc. |

Kaffe,
Looks like they have a basic recipe for a healthy 12lb cat for $15. I was thinking of buying it to compare with the one I'm using, but if it uses the BalanceIt supplements, it wouldn't be very helpful.

Yes - that seems to be the case, 5Cat. I lookd at this site some time ago and remember seeing the ingredients in their "Balance It" supplement. There was something there that turned me off - was it bone meal? I can't find it now.

Supposedly, you can have specific diets made up geared to your pet's condition, but they have to consult with your vet. Kaffe, are you saying the consult diets are the same as the generic ones?

JustMe: I assume they were generic ones since my freinds' cats are young with no health conditions as of yet. But one of them paid something like $50.00 or $100.00 if I remember correctly  I thought that was pretty steep. I did want to look at one of the recipes for healthy cats just to use as a template. But at that price, I think not. |

5CatMom, I would be careful purchasing pet diets over the Internet; unless you know the person's qualifications. BalanceIt is a mix of "chemicals" similar to what the pet food companies add as a vitamin/mineral premix to commercial food. If memory serves me...it was developed by a vet at U Cal Davis and he was hired by Wal Mart to push it for home cooking while the pet food recalls were on going and until "safe food" was brought back on board. I don't have that info. in my files anymore; maybe someone else still has it in memory?
