Massive Beef Recall Issued After E. coli Probe

Beef Products In 15 States Recalled

A meat company is recalling nearly 130,000 pounds of beef products in 15 states because of possible E. coli contamination.

See Press Release Pdf for More Specific Info

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said the meat products were made in March and April by Davis Creek Meats and Seafood, based in Kalamazoo, Mich., and were being sold by Gordon Food Service stores.

The products were shipped to distribution centers and retailers in Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

The items being recalled include boxes of mechanically tenderized steaks and ground beef of varying weighs. Labels on the boxes bear the establishment number "Est. 1974 A" inside the USDA mark of inspection and a date code (on the top right corner of the label) between "060: and "120." Only products with those date codes are subject to recall.

Each box also bears a net weight declaration and the message, "Manufactured for Gordon Food Service" or "Distributed by Gordon Food Service."

The problem was discovered by the Michigan Department of Community Health as part of an E. coli investigation.

E. coli symptoms include stomach cramps that may be severe and diarrhea that may turn bloody within one to three days. E. coli can cause complications including kidney failure.

Martha....

Thanks for the post!

Do you by any chance know if that alert extends into anywhere in Canada? I know here in Toronto we have a Gordon's Food Services....but have not heard or read anything about Canada's possible involvement for this particular alert. Anything you know would be much appreciated!

My thanks in advance!

At least the recalls seem to be increasing instead of decreasing. Why is this going on? What is the reason behind it all? Is someone crying out for people to wake up and question where their food comes from? And how it is handled/stored etc? Could it possibly be that we need a separate agency responsible for inspecting all of the food here? Not run by the FDA or the USDA but independent of those two. Now I know why I stopped buying ground beef years ago. Too dangerous unless it's from Whole Foods with grass fed cows. Thanks for the heads up on this as many people rely on this forum to keep them well informed. Did not hear about this on the local news stations. So again-thx!

You're so welcome, JJ.

It just so happend that I got the news alert while I was EATING some GROUND ROUND... for the first time in a long while. The dogs had theirs the night before and everyone was fine, so I really wasn't all that worried ... but I was glad I had passed up the cheaper ground beef. I called the meat market (mid sandwich eating) and found out they do not get meat from this company.
 Smiley Yippee!

Wondering where the Buffalo I bought elsewhere is from. It's still frozen so don't know if the dogs will even want it yet....

We do seem to be running out of options, don't we?

Huh

JJ:  it's Karma.  When corporations lie, cheat, cut corners, deceive consumers long enough, don't get inspected, use faulty and contaminated equipment, stop taking pride in their product to make more money, and eventually the beef is gonna hit the fan...along with the fish, poultry, and hogs...the list is getting kinda long isn't it?!?

The only thing I have been able to find out is that they, GFS, are apparenly the same company...one in Canada and the other in the US.

Maybe more info will surface in another day or so.

BTW I did discover it wasn't the cheaper ground beef...but SIRLOIN.

I'll post to you, right away, if I hear of anything on/from the Canadian Gordon's Food Service.

You might want to call your meat market anyway, just to see if they buy anything from GFS...either of them.

Aside from the mad cow deal this is yet one more reason I raise my own. I'm thankful to have started doing that years ago. At least thats one thing I don't have to worry about.

anything i should look out for when buying a side? i know grass fed/finished. hopefully organic certified or almost there pasture . . .  anything else i should be aware of in the raising?

Thanks both CodyBear and Martha, I agree also. Your both right that we are running out of options. It is on here as well as other forums that we will be able to help and save each other from further contaminating ourselves or our pets. The majority of people on here are greatly concerned and as soon as they see something amiss they are nice enough to put it on here for everyone to see. Without each other who would help us?

I agree and I, for one, am very appreciative.

It really does "take an Itchmo Village to raise a pet"!

I am luckier than most because I live in a rural, farm country area.  Our local farmer's market always has someone who brings free-range and grain fed meats to market.  If they want to bring in meat, they flash freeze it, then keep it in a freezer by electrical outlets at the market.  In this small area, there is no hesitation in buying these meats, because if we don't actually know the person, the surname is familiar.  I just don't ever buy "store-bought" meats anymore (and very little produce at a store).  As I've posted before, the taste of these fresh meats, produce, eggs, etc., makes "store-bought" taste like what it is.  It's worth the drive if you have to get out of a major metropolitan area to find such a place to purchase your foods.

Some people always say to me, "but it is so much more expensive."  Yep, it is more expensive.  I also need far less of good, fresh food to feel full and satisfied.  As a result, I've lost weight without ever trying.  My overall health has improved saving me thousands of dollars in healthcare costs and medications.  In the long run, it has been ridiculously cheaper, and more healthy.  When I look into the bright eyes of my dogs, see the behaviorial problems all disappear without additional training, and see their glowing coats, I know that they are doing better also.

"it's Karma" Grin

Well put CodyBear. Grin Whether you call it "what goes around comes around, it's all on the wheel" or whatever that is exactly what is happening.

Why is this all happening now? you might ask. Simple they (greedy corporations) have pushed too far. So now there is a beef recall. So maybe everyone is starting to check for things that they didn't in the past. Maybe they are becoming more aware of the situation. Whatever the reasons this is the beginning, they have pushed the envelope and it is pushing back. This has been going on and off for years but I would bet that everyone out there is testing as much as they can. They see the "red flags" raised over the pet food, they realize that people are NOT going to take this anymore.

Old Native American legend about this, sort of goes something like this, pardon me if I offend anyone don't remember this exactly.

Well about a thousand or so years ago the Native Americans did not treat the animals with respect, now the animals understood that it was their job to feed man and they accepted that fact but they only asked to be treated with respect. So they made the men sick to show their displeasure with just being treated poorly. All the meat that was eaten made the people ill, the people cried out to the Great Spirit for help. The Great spirit heard them and provided the plants as medicine with the understanding that they would never dis-respect the animals again.

As stories go it has some interesting points. Are we treating the animals that we eat with respect, NO.

Are we having lots of problems with food, YES.

So just maybe we should heed the old legends. Known fact for you hunters out there, you want a clean kill with no adrenalin rush, spoils the meat. How are these animals being treated?

Karma ( again no offense to anyone) tells us this, action=reaction. What we send out we receive. The greedy corps have no respect for the food, they  use rendered products in the pet food, they clip beaks off the chickens etc. Now it is coming back to them. The lawsuits, loss of good name, the loss of income, profits all because they have not treated any of us with respect.

Yes real food costs more, but like CodyBear said you save that in medical alone. I guess we really do get what we pay for don't we. Huh

Sad

I think I could easily become a vegaterian after reading tips on slaughtering a cow... pig... chicken... goat..etc. etc.

I know the doggies need the meat, but I don't know if I could do it even for them.... glad I'm not having to make that choice ~ at the moment anyway. I'd likely come closer to just going fishing instead. Smiley
