4leggers - have you considered food allergies for your itchy dog? There may be a meat, veg or other ingredient in the food you are feeding that is not being tolerated. Labs do seem to often have overreactive skin, whether food or environment related.
My dogs are very allergic to chicken, and get really itchy and develop yeast infections in their ears if they eat it. I think a few people on here felt the tapioca in that food might have been a problem for their pets too. Not to say it's a bad food, just may have ingredients your lab might be reacting to, or you may need to switch proteins.
I also learned from a vet awhile back that dogs don't have the same problems with cholesterol as people do. Also, even though my dogs are allergic to chicken meat, they do well with eggs. Vet said it was a different kind of protein at that stage of development. They are supposed to be a good protein source for pets.

YesBiscuit and Petslave,
Thank you for your knowledge, I feel better about feeding the eggs. Petslave, we have recently decided to switch our Labs to Nature's Logic, I was going to go with the Chicken formula. However, after reading what you said may try a different protein source in that line. This is such a valuable site. Thank you.

It could be something other than chicken, or even food, but that's a good place to start. A lot of people put their dogs on bland home-cooked diets for awhile to see if the symptoms lessen or go away, then start adding different proteins and carbs to ID problem foods. Some vets will test for food allergies, others say it's not reliable. This article has some info on the whole issue, including "challange" diets: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1664&articleid=143

4leggersMom- My cats did fine with the NL other than constipation[which acidophilus & pumpkin helped] but it was too rich for the dogs. Same problem with NV. It may have been the mont. clay which both have or the fruits & fats sprayed on both for vitamin content. If yours just have skin problems & no stomach issues either 1 should work for you.

I have been going to a small meat processing plant near me. Local people raise their own goats, lambs, cows, deer (in season) and have them butchered here. This means they are not pumped full of antibiotics for shipping and auctions. I can get FDA also but really not necessary as the animals are locally raised and healthy. So I find out which day a particular breed of animal will get butchered and then I go get the throwaway parts that are tossed in a huge barrel. And such throwaway parts! Kidneys (some people don't want them) lots of bones with lots of meat on them, just a feast. I put them in a pan, turn on high, when they sizzle I turn down to low until they are cooked. Then I separate them into freezer bags so I have a couple of weeks worth of happiness. They are happy to give me all these parts free to haul away. So if you live near an area where they raise animals, even if they are doing it on a big scale and shipping them, there is sure to be a local meat processing place nearby, as the ranchers always raise some for themselves. Go there, make friends, and get all the free meat you want.

Welcome, tenaj! That is a very helpful tip. The local meat market where I live works a lot with meeting pet owner needs and I know one of the employees there has them cook up scraps for her dogs right in the shop. She loves knowing exactly what is in her pet food.
