Well, I know I can't afford to feed feline's pride since I have 10 cats.  I just figured it out.  It would conservatively cost me $10,000 to $11,000 per year to feed my cats, figuring an average weight of 10 pounds per cat, roughly 100 ounces a day this brand per day for 10 cats. 100 ounces x 365 days equal 36,500 ounces (or 2,281 pounds) per year ($30 per day)   Shocked   I could cook and supplement for less than that and I would have more confidence than with commercial raw.

I do think Dr. Hodgkin's diabetic cats site is very informative (she does talk about feeding canned, pouched food, not just raw food)

I do not use Felines Pride but the raw I use for Jasper costs about $50.00 per month for 10 pounds of food including shipping. Jasper is a big boy at 19 lbs and has a very hearty appetite. Unless you have a lot of large kitties, the amount consumed would hopefully be much less per cat.

Laurie,

Jasper only eats 1/3 pound a day of raw?  Does he eat something else in addition?

All my cats are at least 10-15 pounders, except for 3 of them.  They are mostly big cats.

What brand are you using?

Yup, that is pretty much the average for him. He eats Aunt Jeni's.

Per www.barfdirect.com s calculator ... a 10lb cat / dog they do not differentiate species that want s to maintain current and is fully grown... 4 oz of raw is the recommendation... for 19 lb it is 7.6 oz .48 of a lb ( for slight loss 6 oz ... with just the two on just raw my bill was under 6 a week for premade that was "complete"

http://www.barfdirect.com/catalogs/store.asp?pid=173798&catid=27349 is the calc;)

Raw feeds eat way less... my cat at 5-7 oz but with CRF she needed to add wt continually... my yorkie ate 4-5 oz ... right now Ben is working up to all raw ( yippy for my $$s ) to gain wt 2 cups XXX dry and 24 oz raw ... He is 75 needing to add about 10 lbs

hmmm.  It must vary by which commercial raw you are using, just like it varies with commercial canned cat food.  I calculated for the feline's pride commercial raw, 3/4-1 ounce per 1 pound of weight per day.

Aunt Jeni's feeding calculator is similar to Barfdirect. http://www.auntjeni.com/feeding.htm

Auntjeni's may actually cost less than what I am feeding now, depending on the shipping.

JustMe, I'm feeding my 16 lb 9YO boy Felines Pride, and he eats 7 ozs a day.  But in talking with Laurie they eat less on AuntJeni's.  He loves the FP so much I'm going to stick with it, and he's doing wonderfully on it.  I've been tempted to try the AuntJeni's so if you do let us know how it goes.

Just noted today that my big grocery store has added a small selection of frozen food for pets.  Steve's Real Food, one flavor for cats and three for dogs, and another brand for dogs (sorry; middle-aged brain forgot name between grocery store and home.) This is the same store that added Wysong shortly after the recalls, and the Wysong mixes for adding to homemade food.  I wonder if they are just tuned in to market trends, or if they have had requests?  The frozen food did not look to be selling very well.

Unfortunately, I am seeing more and more people in the regular pet food aisles, which were deserted last summer and fall.  I'm guessing people are now thinking those foods are OK again.   Sad

Catbird:  Yes - I think petfood sellers are picking up on the fact that there is a growing number of raw and whole-food feeders now ... these usually come into a petfood store or feed store and ask, "You have any raw for cats/dogs?"  --- they get enough of those querries and hence get the point.  My local small petfood store has added THREE more freezers for storing raw pet food and some new lines I've not seen before.  Pity my cats won't eat commercial raw food and will eat only what Meowmie makes for them --- so, I'm stuck with he grinder every two or three weeks.

OY! I just accompanied my daughter to our local Petco to buy acquarium supplies... 1/4 of the petfood shelves are empty  Huh  I asked and all they would say to me is that they are "re-arranging" stuff... Maybe they are making room for Wellness?
