I couldn't be happier that many of you are seeing empty pet food aisles or changes in what is stocked.
Went to my local PetSmart this weekend (October 20) to pick up kitty litter wearing a T-shirt that said Don't Buy Congealed Chemical Crap in Cans, It's Not Pet Food. Oddly enough, none of the PetSmart staff asked if they could help me. The store was advertising a Big Brands sale event. And having a dog training class. There were way too many people purchasing. And the store staff was talking to customers about the great new line of Nutro Natural Choices food in pretty new packages. A lady behind me was purchasing dry Nutro Complete Care cat food. I asked her if she was sure it was safe, and she assured me it was. I asked her if she realized this manufacturer was one involved in producing bad pet food, and she gave me a blank look. So I guess the message here is keep trying everywhere you go to make consumers think about this.
I am pleased to report that the Wild Oats store here has started taking special orders for pet foods, where they had refused to do that just a month or so ago. The manager I spoke with said the foods were flying off the shelves, and they had to do this to keep up with demand and keep their customers satisfied.
So there are mixed results here. Just keep up the good work of spreading the message every time you can. 3cats

Noontime today. Big grocery store chain. Not a single person in the double cat/dog food aisle, except DH and myself buying cat litter. Shelves fully stocked from floor to top. Local feed store which carries holistic pet foods. Difficult keeping shelves stocked. Much demand for holistic foods. Mostly the cat food shelves are lean. Seemed to be plenty of dog food. Biggest demand seems to be for turkey canned.

It is the same in my area. Grocery stores stocked with pet food & no one buying when I am in there. Pet stores are getting the business as there are lines most of the time when I go in there. Lots of coupons around too. Pet Supermarket has $2 off coupons regularily in the newspaper.

My local Petsmart is virtually empty everytime I go in there. Same for Petco. Recently while I was there I saw that someone, most likely a sales rep, had stuck $2 off coupons in all the boxes containing the canned Nutro foods. I proceeded to gather them all up and threw them in the trash on my way out. I'm soooo bad.

oh Laurie... you're too much I had to get some aqua plants for the beta fish tanks 2 weeks ago so dropped into Petco. The handful of customers I saw in the Huuuuuuge store were looking at various stuff but not petfood. One lady was checking out cat trees; a gentleman with his dog was checking out leashes; two at the check out counter had kitty litter, some spray stuff, a cat carrier... but no pet food. The salespeople looked depressed.

You go, Laurie!!!!
This weekend local "animal food warehouse" still practically giving away Nutro. Big billboards up all over town advertising specials on it. I buy my Wellness there because it is less expensive there than elsewhere. Employees at this store are now kind of "shadowing" customers in the dog and cat food aisles; they never did this before. If they see you spending a lot of time, or looking closely at labels, they come over and ask if they can help. I don't know exactly what their motive is. One of them tried to point out to me that the Nutro is on special. Boy, did I give him an earful!

Nutro is pushing their products like crazy around here. When I informed the clerk why I would never buy Nutro (or Purina or Hills or . . . she told me that the recall was a long time ago and that it's over now )One chain has closed 1/3 stores (Pet Supplies Plus), another has closed at least 2 of its stores (Soldans). Wish we could get a good holistic pet store started around here. The closest is about an hour away . . . Don't expect to see much growth here since Michigan's economy has tanked!

Still getting coupons in the mail from big box pet store for new products and products I used to buy. Also getting lots of email coupons I don't need.
They never sent me coupons when I was purchasing some of these products on a regular basis and needed the coupons.

The local farm & feed store is broadening its line and searching for USA made toys, collars, leashes, etc. ...Said they were somewhat difficult to find, but they are looking and will get them because people are asking and even making special orders!
Whether people want USA-made products out of prudence, paranoia, patriotism, or protectionism... the consumer demand is there and swelling!

My supermarket has those cash register generated coupons for a competitor's brand when you buy certain products. I've been getting coupons for FREE cans of Alpo cuts and gravy and Mighty Dog. Both were part of the recall. They're actually trying to GIVE the stuff away to get their customers back.

You're right there. I took great pleasure in mailing some coupons back in the summer/fall.

Nutro coupons I have received some from either Petco or Petsmart as well as Hill coupons.
People still buying pet food in my grocery store. Well so do I I'm still buying Fancy Feast and Newmans there.
I find a lot of people do think the food is safe now. I do not.

Just got a Christmas gift for the Holidays, 2007. Went into my local Kroger-owned grocery store. The pet food aisle is down to one side of a complete aisle, where it used to be four times that size, and separated into two aisles for dogs and two aisles for cats. Merry Christmas 2007, PFI. It couldn't happen to a better group of poison purveyors who deserve it more-- 3cats

I honestly never go to the pet food aisles in the grocery stores but now that you mention it, I can't remember seeing anybody in those aisles.....tee hee. Also used to see people with huge bags of dog & cat foods in their baskets.....haven't seen that in a while either......double tee hee. Then there's the high-end pet store I go to (a half hour away......Petsmart & Petco two mins away). This little store is always packed with people. The first time I went in, I remember one or two freezers against the wall......now that entire wall is all freezers. Amazing how many people have the frozen raw in their little baskets. I also noticed that Merricks & Evangers has not only the cans on the shelves but cases & cases of the food stored on the very top of those shelves. I bet they were running out so now they are obviously well stocked. They carry only the best which is why I like to go there. Have got a lot of other people going there too. Plan on going to Petsmart to see if any dog toys are on sale (if I can find any NOT MIC) & will look around. However, the last few times I went in there for fish stuff, it just wasn't busy like it used to be. Oh boo hoo.......
