I was reading about the postcard blitz and that's a great idea!  Also mentioned in that topic were lots of media contacts that should be notified so more national stories will get out on the airwaves.  Another I happened to think of is Oprah Winfrey.  She is a proclaimed animal lover and has pets of her own.  Her show is watched by millions and she is respected in her own right.  Here's the link where you can suggest topics for her show:

Another animal-loving celebrity with a talk show is Ellen DeGeneres.  Here's the link to her show's site to suggest topics:

She's also holding a contest looking for unusual pets to put on her show, which I thought was interesting seeing as we're looking for a celebrity pet lover to help us get this story out! Smiley

I've sent my pleas to these ladies to do a show on this and urge you all to do the same!

On Wednesday, Oprah's entire show was devoted to dogs. One of her guests was veterinarian Martin Goldstein who was promoting his book, "The Nature of Animal Healing."  He gave a brief overview of the pet food recalls, explained that dogs are carnivores who need meat but not most of the crap that's in dry pet food, and showed viewers how to make their own food for their dogs.

In writing to Oprah's show, I think we should say "Thanks!" for devoting some time to the issue this week.

I am curious, did Oprah say what she fed her dogs?

Oprah first mentioned that her dog Sophie was in kidney failure about 2 weeks ago. At that time, she started to tear up, but gave no details whatsoever.
On this week's show, she didn't say what food she was feeding when her dog got sick. In fact, she did not say that Sophie was sick because of the food.  She didn't even say the dog ate contaminated food. Oprah just said the dog was in kidney failure, and NOW she is feeding home-cooked food to help keep Sophie comfortable. (The use of the word "comfortable" makes me think the prognosis is not good.)
Oprah did say she is now feeding a mixture of cooked chicken, potatoes, and carrots. She demonstated how she mashes them all up in a bowl.  The vet who was there gave her a look when she was adding the potatoes, as if she were putting in too much. He emphasized that dogs are carnivores, they need meat, and only small amounts of potatoes should be added.
Remember, Oprah was sued big time by the beef industry when she uttered the sentence, "I will never eat a hamburger again."  Besides the great potential financial loss, that lawsuit was almost the end of her TV show as she would've lost the right to free speech if she had lost that case.  I seriously doubt Oprah is going to speak out against the pet food industry in a way that most of us would like.

I'm sorry I missed that show - and I'd sure like to know when Sophie's problems started and what Oprah had been feeding her!!  Sounds like maybe even she is dancing around the issue!    I'd just like to see a show or newscast or something done to ask why and how...and get the facts out.  You can't be sued for asking why and how, or simply stating facts or else all news anchors would be in court all the time!  Not a show that accuses anyone of anything - just stick to straight facts.  Isn't that what news is?!  And why won't anyone do it?!!!

I am sorry I missed the show, as well. Had I known the show was going to be dedicated to pets, I would have watched it.  However, I have to admit, I gave up watching Oprah for personal reasons of my own.

As an animal lover, though, I have to say I respect her, and I feel for her, as I know she LOVES her babies very much - that much is very clear.  I have seen shows with her and her dogs, and one can tell how much joy she receives from them.

I do hope Sophie will be okay, as will her other dogs.

Katie Couric, on the CBS Evening News, did several small spots. One of them was on how much food products we import from China and their history of food safety products. It is several billion dollars a year and growing. Some of the products would surprise you, Like apple juice.
The problem is: most celebreties are backed by companies with ties to the pet food industry. It is big business. They cannot afford to allienate these people.
