Arlo, I was wondering too if a lecture and assignment focusing on the ingredients would steer things back to the science.  Maybe there needs to be an extracurricular club for those interested in the politics.  Think how much this semester's rushed planning is helping you prepare for teaching it again next semester    Hang in there!
