There Bridgett, You have My next question. what about the roaches? And if I spray the soap and water next to the walls, will it keep things out? I am now infested with hornets. Anything for that?

Supposedly hornet do not like MINT.... a all natural wasp hornet kill was the main ingrediant of dish soap and most shampoos ( dish work but you need a less concetrated form or youll use alot ) and mint ....
I do the soap and water weekly all baseboards and the exterior plus use it to soap the yard

I do use a spray in my garden that is for organic gardening and it contains garlic and peppermint oil and rosemary and cottonseed oil and it seems to keep the insects at bay---I was skeptical but it worked

Hmmm, I'm no gardener, but I wonder if planting catnip (aka catmint) around your house or garden would help repel the bugs? Of course then you'd attract all neighborhood cats.....

Why do cats always jump on your lap with their claws out? Especially when you are wearing shorts?

Ha ha excellent question, Bridgett! No easy answer, either! (I do prefer the company of pesky cats, though.)

Trudy, I have found that cloves keep the hornets away. I tie about a tablespoon up in cheesecloth and pin it up in the corners of my porch and the hornets stay away. Best, Arlo

Catbird, maybe while the cats are running towards the catnip they will meet the bugs who are running from the capnip and, bugs come to screeching halt but it's too late - no more bugs. It's worth a try.

On a serious note, thanks for the idea about the mint, Sharky, and thanks also to Carol for your experiences; we'll soon we up to our eyeballs in bugs in my area.
Also thank you Arlo for the cloves idea. We have hornets, too.
I so like the idea of natural bug repellents.

The bugs will only have to worry about getting trampled to death. Cats with catnip on the brain are pretty much useless except for entertainment purposes.
...what am I saying! They are useless all the time!

I think the borax will work sprinkled around the foundation. Klondike, I have so many roses, and they all turn black sooner or later, and just fall all apart. So, what is the difference between cornmeal? i just bought some, but i'm sure it's plain old cornmeal. Yes, yellowjackets can have a very nasty bite. My daughter is allergic, and one did bite our Doxie. He didn't want to go out for a long time after that. We also have something here i never had in Maine. they are called yellow flies. and when they bite Me I swell all up. I don't know what their real name is.
Natural-and Organic--New- I bought a can of something called Pure Citrus. It is made with Orange and You sure don't need much. I've been wanting to tell you guys all about it but kept forgetting. It's also a non-aerosol. Not tested on animals. Says Made in the USA. I love it.

You can make your own "yardguard" also, 1 part original scent listerine,1 part mint mouthwash & 1 part water[generic mouthwash works fine].Put in an empty spray bottle & you have a spray for crawling & flying bugs safe for kids & animals.
