Let's start a thread posting things We can use in our home, that won't harm the pets,. I think that would include people anyway.
Things like what can We buy that is not toxic-Like the Un-flameable [can't think of the word I need]
what to use for floors, countertops, etc.?
Beds, linens, cat and dog food containers.?
Water, shampoos?
Think of everything , and We'll make a list of safe things.

Trudy, Thanks for this.
Today I saw my neighbor's lawn chemical company come and douse the place with ganulars and liquids.
So badly that I could taste this stuff.
Two minutes later some dopey kid comes along with his puppy and the pup goes right through the stuff, along with the boy.  I started hollering at the guy putting the stuff down.  He looked at me, shrugged his shoulders and said....No English.

I hate the weeds that grow in the cracks of my walkways and drive way.
Vinegar in a squirt bottle, with a little dish wash liquid mixed in makes an awesome weed killer.
Applied on a sunny day, those babies are cooked in 2 hours.
Applied on a cloudy day, takes a little longer.

Doesn't work on weeds in the grass though......will kill some of the grass.

Edited to add:  The soap is a surfectant......makes the vinegar really penetrate the soil. Grin

We know that the chemical will hurt or kill the puppy. that's for sure.
Now I know what to put on some of my weeds, because I won't use chemicals.
I bought  some borax soap powder and mixed it with confectionary sugar and put it down out side where the ants are. they took it back to their homes and it got them all.
We don't worry too much about weeds in the grass. It just looks like We have more grass Grin

Same here!  at least it is green. Wink

I have a hard time myself when neighbors have these lawn companies apply this cr*p to their lawns.  I have to keep all my windows shut for a day or so, because I get violently sick otherwise from the chemicals.  Any tiny exposure to malathion (insecticide) will make me deathly ill for days.  Where I live, the law says they have to put up little marker signs warning people to keep children and pets off.  The signs have to stay in place for 24 hours, and are in English, Spanish, and with pictures.

I use vinegar on the driveway weeds too, but have not added the dish soap.  Will have to try that!

The dish soap should work good. I put too much on My daughters' and son-in laws plants last year and killed them all by mistake.

I know some safe things for the kitchen, house-
Baking soda, Vinegar, and lemons. I also heard that lemons are disinfectants. Has anyone else heard that? Because I do need a disinfectant, and have been using lemon juice.

Yes & so is vinegar. Just be careful with the lemon j,it bleaches. You can wash vinyl & tile floors with vinegar in hot water, but you need to rinse it also.

This thread reminded of me of something that happened to a friend of mine a couple of months ago.

My friend has a property and horses down south of town.  She has been using Chem-Lawn, a chemical fertilizer/pesticide company, for her property for many years.  She HAD a dog name Paisley, a red heeler, who would get aggressive towards the guys.  So Shelby told them to always call before they came to make sure that she would around to restrain the dog.

Well, the last time they visited they didn't call.  Shelby was outside giving the man what for about not calling, she was about to leave, when Paisley comes up and starts growling at the guy.  The guy, being the scum that he is, sprayed whatever chemicals he was using down on the ground right in front of Paisley to stop her from approaching.  Immediately, she started sneezing and her eyes were watering.  Three weeks later she was dead.  Little Paisley died and this jerk killed her with his chemicals.

Shelby is trying to go after Chem-lawn but so far they aren't admitting anything.

Poor Paisley.  It just shows how dangerous all this stuff is.  Sure, Paisley recieved it full force in the face but what are the cummulative affects of these chemicals on the environment, pets and people?  I don't use chemicals either.

Vinegar will clean just about anything.  As far as weeds, I yank um!  With bugs, I have a live and let live policy.  Except for roaches ,centipedes and black widows.  They die by squishing.  All other spiders are caught and carried outside.

a good bug spray but it is a bit scary ... hand dish soap and water ... 4 oz to 8 oz of soap to about a gallon of water in a spray bottle ( being lazy I use a battery operated sprayer;) ) I kills bugs and spider s instantly

If the soap and water will kill bugs, then good. I was going to ask that next.

This is in the south, and the fields i talk about are for planting our food.  Angry

Bridgett, I'll tell you what happens to the pets, and no one says anything.
Every year when I worked for the vets, pets came in with poisening. All the vets would always ask- Have they been in the fields? If they had been the vets knew they had been poisened. some lived and some died. Now, if a pet went into the fields righ after spraying, they would die right then. that should tell someone something Huh Huh
It makes Me sick. Angry

Bridgett,
I have used it but only outside of my house, along the foundation line.
When applying, don not do so on a windy day.
I wore a face mask and eye protection.
Looking at this under a microscope it is very jagged edged, comes from pulverized shells I think.  The boxes themselves warn you not to inhale or to get it in your eyes.

I use it on the outside of the house ie near the foundation .... no problems here but I guess some have had breathing issues ( I guess the keep the pets out of area while laying wasnt done) .... DOWN side is you have to reapply after rain...

I solve the issue of plants by buying local and as much organic as I can ... yeah greater risk of salmonella and ecoli but Smiley

I have been wanting to try it for the roaches around here.  Darn things!  I think I will give it a whirl.  I have to wait for the wind to stop blowing around here though.

Thanks all!
