I swear people have no compassion anymore. I cannot believe they cannot make some arrangement for her to buy a permit or something for a little while till she finds homes or the people come back. Of course they go after the pets, in VA we can 50 illegals living in one house or apartment with 10 cars parked in the yard but that's okay. I will never get it.

For cripes sake, what has happened to this country? Too caught up in enforcing "rules" rather than helping someone out. I will send my pleas to the links right away. Thanks Klondike

That was quick, got a reply from the Council stating to "rest assured", that "the city will give Ms. VanDusen sufficient time to find new homes for her animals as long as she is making a good faith effort". And they are also helping her get the word out through their weekly publication.

Wow, I don't think I even got a response yet! That is very encouraging. Maybe they just changed course.
Thanks everyone that has written or will write! I figure it can't hurt. I have sent this to a couple of local papers, too. Who knows, I may even spur an adoption.
Please don't hesitate to write if you haven't yet. Even if the city is bending the rule, the more encouragement they get, the easier it is for them to stay on this compassionate course.
The lady that runs the shelter has been slowly adopting them. Sounds like she is down to 20 from 31. It looks like such a nice home for them that you hate to see them get the bum's rush since she was working hard to do good placements.
I'm hopeful that now she may get the time to at least avoid the final solution for them. I'm sure that most can be placed and then she could keep several that can't.

I think Ms. VanDusen is a true hero and rather than the City giving her time to find homes, I think they should try to find a facility where she can keep them and care for them, its the only right thing to do. She is fillling a need that is there and doing the job that the Ft Lewis ANimal Shelter and the City of Lakewood should be doing, they ought to pay HER for doing their work for them. Im sure it wont happen, but I can always dream. Its heartening to see people like Diana VanDusen still exist.

I just put it on one dog forum, so if you want to put it elsewhere, that couldn't hurt. You can copy it or link to it.
Someone from the Tacoma animal shelter saw my other post and said she'd try to help place an animal. She hated to hear about Ft. Lewis shutting down its shelter, since they already are getting pets from the base. I wonder why the base shelter shut down....I might try to find out.
Thanks for writing!

Thanks for keeping this in the news, Klondike. She has placed all the dogs, and had 14 cats today, before today's adoptathon at PetSmart. PetSmart offered to run these adoptathons every weekend this month. Emailed the city, and included my blog link to keep them "encouraged". Looks like the assistant city manager may actually be considering a zoning change for her. http://redstarcafe.wordpress.com/2008/04/12/buying-time-for-soldiers-pets/Over on another Itchmo thread, Geff posted about the Tacoma shelter's kill philosophy. Van Dusen did not want to place the animals there for that reason. http://itchmoforums.com/against-animal-abuse-and-cruelty/inhumane-society-t3671.0.htmlBTW, little bit of Lakewood trivia: Diana VanDusen lives near Steilacoom Lake. The book, "Shadowland", documented the abuse of actress Frances Farmer at the Steilacoom mental facility. She was incarcerated as part of the anti-Communist blacklisting, and subjected to a lobotomy as well as abuse by the guards.
