Help! I have neighbors who have been gone for almost 4 days and left their sweet pregnant young cat outside to fend for herself. Even before this she was always hungry as I took her food occassionally. I am now feeding her daily by putting food and a bowl of water in their yard. These neighbors had previously lived in this same house 3 years ago. At that time they adopted a yellow kitty that I had rescued from a tree. Needless to say that when they moved out they left the cat which later became seriously injured. I took this kitty to our no kill Humane Society so it's wounds could be tended to and then adopted out. So, Here they are back again now with this pregnant kitty. Other than continuing to feed this little girl, what are your suggestions? Do I confront the neighbors or just continue to take care of her? I am guessing that she is due to deliver any time now. I worry about the babies as I don't no nuthin about birthin no babies!

This happens to Me a lot. Is she outdoors? And how long will they be home? some cats can die from having kittens, and they will hide. I would bring Her in and let Her have Her kittens first, and then decide what to do next. Can you do that?

If you can take her in please do so. I think she needs a safe place to have those babies and someone to at least monitor the birth. Sounds as if those folks really wouldn't miss her anyway. (Reminds me a bit of Linus and his first family ~ figured probably the hawks got him so didn't bother to look for him for 5 days ~ a 12 week old kitten!) She's also going to need good nutrition if she's nursing those kittens. If she was in my area I'd snatch this girl and then make a decision about what to do next. I would not just leave her outside and feed her.
At the very least I would take her to the no kill shelter you took their former cat. Maybe some of the others here wouldn't agree with me, but after this long, knowing she was pregnant, I'd say she's been abandoned, neglected at least.
Keep us posted. Blessings catmom5

Bringing her in is not an option at this time. I would be too afraid that my cats might be exposed to anything she might be carrying. One of the young adults who live in this house actually came home a little while ago and she went in the house with him. Earlier I tried to feel if the kitties were moving in her tummy and I could not feel anything. I'm worried.......... Edit: she did not go in the house.

This sort of thing is always so distressing: people adopting a cat which they proceed to neglect. I think that if you cannot house this poor pregnant cat even temporarily (and I totally understand your qualms since you have other cats and this is a "strange cat"), then you know what? I would go ahead and take this poor kitty to the no-kill shelter where she and her newborns will at least get adequate care. If you feel guilty about doing that, you can leave a note on your neighbors' door explaining what happened. My guess will be that your neighbors will let go of the situation becuase they don't know if they wold be cited for animal cruelty by the shelter. Besides, it is hard to imagine how they can leave a cat in that condition and claim they miss it! Gee, such people make me so angry!

Laurie- I have to agree with everyone else, you should grab her & take her to the no kill shelter. I doubt if they will even look for her. At least you will know she is safe & cared for,& they will spay her when the kittens are weaned.

Yes, Please. You have to do something for this girl. Do you have any spare room for Her, anywhere in your house at all? If not, i would go to a no kill shelter. Did you say you don't feel the kittens moving? that's not a good thing, either. she can very well die having these kittens. Or something can smell her and come and kill the whole bunch. Please help this cat, somehow. And don't worry about the neighbors. If they weren't smart enough to spay Her, then they shouldn't even have her. Poor cat.

Laurie Just to add to the votes for taking her to the shelter, that's what I would do if I couldn't bring her into the house. I don't know whether the neighbours would even care to know what happened to her; they sound like the kind of people that would dump her anyway, once she'd had kittens.

Thank you everyone for your advice! I have a friend who works for the Humane Society that I have gotten to know by visiting the pets they keep at Petsmart where she often works. I plan on trying to contact her first to see if there is room at the shelter and how prego kitty will be handled. If all goes well then I will contact Animal Control to come and pick her up. I feel so badly that I cannot adopt her myself. Trudy I am in Ohio.

Trudy, I wish you were closer too. It has been mentioned to me that sometimes shelters will abort the babies. Anyone have any info on this?

If it was early in the pregnancy they would & spay at the same time. But since it is late I don't think they would. Unless there is a problem, which there could be since you felt no movement.

I would want a no kill shelter. Because i would worry more about the mother. Around here, when the mother cat has Her kittens, She is the one put down, because everyone wants a kitten. If She's very big you've got to do something quickly. Is there a no kill, or someone who could help you with Her until she has Her kittens and can be spayed?
