Eddie's Blog has been updated... http://www.petsfortheenvironment.org/blog/2008/09/16/a_little_update_on_pet_food_testing"Right now Environmental Working Group's getting preliminary results back from the lab and their smart humans are double checking the results to make sure they're accurate. And they're also doing research on ingredients (kinda like me, but sciency-er) and possible health effects that could be linked to the chemicals they found. "Hmm, wonder if the pfi is also hanging out around there now to see what's up.. [Pssst PFI: If you'd clue your folks in that testing for contaminants and excess levels of ingredients/chemicals in their finished product is a good thing to do before selling it, then you'd not be sweating this out ... but then, pet owners ARE continuing to sweat when they open a can or bag of pet food & have been since March 2007... well, this is what happens when due diligence is on the wrong end of the equation and the business end continues to bury their heads in the sand... ..Mars (I seriously hope) got singed by the CDC report on their foods contaminated with salmonella were sickening humans last year & with the recent recalls from Mars for the SAME issues... private testing will surely be on the increase - and sooner or later, the PFI/PFC's carefully planned and orchestrated "ignorance" will no longer be supplying more of their blissful "we've had no complaints" "you're the first complaint" "that's proprietary" BS responses to their customers. ]

Part quote from Eddie's blog from Offy's post above...."And they're also doing research on ingredients (kinda like me, but sciency-er) and possible health effects that could be linked to the chemicals they found. "This is disturbing to say the least....I feel better that perhaps my donation and others, is being used to test pet food and perhaps is helping find something.

Thank you for finding that Offy, this could be of utmost importance to all of us in the weeks to come as we learn the results of their testing. Without you and Carol and all the others here that have found all these things recently, this update, the Mars recall, etc I dont know what I would do.

Absolutely everybody at Itchmo has contributed to the research to help all our furkids (like you too Sandi -for one instance, the Evanger's info.) LOL, the Itchmo members list is a veritable repository of researcher names! To bring up some earlier info from Eddie's blog: http://www.petsfortheenvironment.org/blog/2008/06/02/were_gonna_test_us_some_pet_food"Anyway, it looks like we'll be testing Iams, Wellness, Hill's Science Diet, Innova, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Purina ONE, and more. Don't see your brand? There's still time to tell me what you want tested!

Of all the people I have spoken with since January, 2007 - these are the two questions that haunt every one of us -- exactly what have our pets been exposed to and what are the long-term effects on their health. Has ANY pet food company, manufacturer, government agency or the PFI offered any assistance in answering these questions? Have they shown any real concern about the health of our pets? From all of their denials; their silence; their threats, lies and accusations against consumers, as noted in the many posts on this forum, I would say the answer is "NO!"

Did I read Eddie's first blog right that said they were only testing for heavy metals? Or maybe it was just worded in a way that sounded like that:
"We're going to get the ball rolling by testing 10 kinds of pet food for toxic heavy metals like lead, mercury and chromium"
I sure hope more tests are included, but either way, I hope they post the results soon. I know they have to be careful and double check, but meanwhile we're feeding our pets this stuff.

Whatever they tested for, sure sounds like they found some of it! Hope it wasn't in Wellness since my pets are getting a lot of it.

I got this e:mail response from EWG in regard to my donation and question about their testing programs. Im leaving the name off but am posting the rest:
Thanks for your support of Pets for the Environment -- I apologize that you haven't heard back from us sooner! (Amanda has actually stopped working at EWG, which might explain some of the problem.) We have sent pet food to a laboratory to be tested, and we're currently waiting on the results. As soon as we have received and analyzed them, we'll release a report. If you stay tuned to the Pets for the Environment website and our e-mail updates, you won't miss it.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. Again, we appreciate your support!
Regards,
|

Thanks, Sandi! Good to know they will post as soon as they know.
I may have misread the articles, but it sounded like this is the second round of testing to confirm the first results. I wonder if they did the first batch of tests themselves, then sent them out to a standard lab. Not sure if they do any testing there.
