Amanda, thank you to you and your organization for doing these studies.  Its something that really needs to be done and your group could well be the saving grace for our pets.  I have some questions, one being, do you think it would be helpful or beneficial if one of us submits your report to FDA?  I havent done so yet but was getting ready to but wanted to know your thoughts on this.  Also, a funding question, does your group ask for donations from individuals or do you primarily get donations from bigger sources?

You had indicated you have more pet-related research that will be done over the next year, can I ask what some of those studies are?  Just curious.  And finally, would of any the studies be including any of the pets who have survived after eating the tainted pet food in 2007 but may have kidney damage, etc?  There are many individuals here that have pets with long-term health issues (myself not included as my pet died) due to the tainted food and alot of us have wondered if any organization would be following or monitoring these pets for a long-term effect study?  I hope you dont mind me asking these question and sorry for bombarding you with so many.  Thank you again for the study your group just released, and thank you in advance for your efforts on behalf of pets.  And welcome to Itchmo!     Smiley

Thanks for the welcome, everyone!

Sandi K., to answer your questions: Because the study was on a very small and not representative sample of pets (all of the 60 animals live in one small, suburban town), we aren't planning on submitting it to FDA. We did the tests, more than anything else, to demonstrate that there's a real problem here, and something needs to be done.

As for research, we've got big things in the works, including tests on dog and cat food (we hope). If enough owners of pets with long-term health effects from contaminated food came forward, and we could come up with the funding, we might consider a study in that area -- but it would probably be really expensive.

Basically, it all comes down to money. We anticipate that a lot of our funding for the pets project will come from individual donors -- if that plays out like we hope, we'll be able to test pet products. I'm certainly not here to drum up donations, but since you asked, here's the link! (Plus you can get a "Pets for the Environment" pet id tag!)

I hope I covered everything!

Amanda, thanks so much for the information.  I know of several people at Itchmo that have pets that survived and are suffering the effects of ingesting the tainted food.  For folks at Itchmo with pets in this predicament, this might be something good to get involved in so maybe you could contact Amanda, either thru here or the e:mail addy she gave to let them know abut your pet.  Studies on the long-term effects of the pet food toxin is a big thing we have all wanted done, partly to know what other illnesses might eventually show up beside kidney issues and it could help you and your vet know things to look for and how to treat your furbaby later on down the road.

WElcome to itchmo amanda--thanks for all you are doing to bring up this in the public eye--you may be aware of a website which one of our members started after the nightmare of 2007--it's www.pfpsa.org and he has been able to raise donations for testing foods---too bad you guys couldn't  "hook up" as far as food testing! Smiley

I do have Smudge, 15 yr old calico, still with me, she is a survivor of last year's nightmare--if any long term studies were started---although in my local area here in southern RI I don't know how many others survived. Huh

Again welcome and thanks for all you do to keep our pets healthy!

Thanks for the link, Carol, I have a feeling that will come in handy.

For those of you who were asking: we launched a campaign today to raise $47,000 by May 23rd in order to test pet food. This blog post explains it all: http://www.petsfortheenvironment.org/blog/2008/04/24/i_need_your_help_to_test_pet_food_for_safety

We really want to do this work, but we can't do it unless we can come up with the money, so please spread the word! Thanks.

Amanda - What's the status of the pet food testing  for which  donations were solicited?

I went to the website for EWG and found this further entry on the blog there.  It appears that this may have been written sometime in the beginning of June.

I don't see anything else indicating any results of tests.

Dang - I didn't realize it was so expensive to test pet food.  No wonder the PFC don't do it!   Roll Eyes  Somebody needs to invent that Star Trek "point and scan" thingy ASAP!

According to her profile, Amanda has not visited this site since July 3, 2008, so I don't think she is going to see the question.  If anyone here has donated, perhaps you could e-mail her.  Her e-mail address is not hidden.

I donated quite a bit to that organization and I have e:mailed her several times and she has not responded.  I have to say, that I am a bit irked about this.  Im hoping testing is being done or will be done and I can see something from all of it but right now I dont know what to think.

Sandi,
I hope this turns out to be a legitimate cause since you have donated to it.  I think we have to be careful about organizations who come here soliciting money.  They know there are soft touches here because of our love of pets.  I'm posting again the link to the blog page at EWG website.  You will note that on the left side of the page there is a choice to send an e-mail to contact "Eddie".  Maybe you can try this route to get some answers.  Good luck!

Mandycat, thanks for that but I did try that too earlier with no response.  Guess I'll try it one more time and see.....
