High Levels of Toxic Industrial Chemicals Contaminate Cats And Dogs

They are trying their best to warn us.

In the first study of its kind, Environmental Working Group found that American pets are polluted with even higher levels of many of the same synthetic industrial chemicals that researchers have recently found in people, including newborns.

The results show that America’s pets are serving as involuntary sentinels of the widespread chemical contamination that scientists increasingly link to a growing array of health problems across a wide range of animals—wild, domesticated and human.

The story has been on NPR news in the past hour too, several times as a headline and one more in-depth story so far.

I hope that will get an awful lot of people mad and saying GRRRR.  That is the only way to get anything to change--if enough people get mad enough.

Please don't let them miss this... it's not just outside them.. we're feeding it to them too!!

Yes, they had a scientist on talking about the very study of cat hyperthyroidism related to food can linings that we have discussed here before.

Here's a link to the text of the NPR story:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89726772

It's on the front page on the NPR website.

We really need to bombard FDA with comments before that upcoming meeting in May.  I wish I could attend but if anyone can, heres the info:

The Federal Register Notice of Meeting (FR NOM) for the FDAAA Public Meeting has not published yet.  The published update was based on it publishing the same day but as we all know, there are bound to be delays just when we really don't need one.  I am hoping the notice will publish today (fingers crossed).

Basically I can tell you that there will be a public meeting on May 13 at the Holiday Inn in Gaithersburg, MD.  The time is tentatively set for 9:00 to 4:30.  This is an information-seeking meeting.  The FR notice will have a list of questions that we (CVM) would like the public to address. You will be able to register in advance to speak or just to attend if that is your preference.

Please keep an eye on the CVM Web Page for the notice of meeting.

Sorry for the delay.

And they still think this is limited to melamine and cyanuric acid?

I think this entire 26-27 page report is sufficient to file with the FDA /CVM by EWG. I hope they do.

And, I can't wait to see what the pet food industry does with it in their magazine. The pfcs seem to have ignored the ACS report, which didn't include the brands of cat food tested.

Sure looks like fish is going to be eliminated from my cats diets as far as possible.

Maybe we are going to see some movement on the FDAAA.

AAFCO & PFI are you reading or hiding?

Offy, do you think they will submit it to FDA? If not we certainly can.  And we can submit it to the Pet Food Industry magazine too if they dont do anything with it.  Im sure this is something that Duane will have a hard time countering, with all of his constant talk of how safe pet food is, what will he do now?

Hey all--

As a dog-lover and a member of EWG's web team, I've been lurking around here for a while. I hope you don't mind!

As far as I know, we don't have plans to submit the study to FDA. We've got a whole list of pet-related research that we're hoping to do over the next year (although we're pretty little as non-profits go, so a lot is dependent on funding and other projects), which should be pretty interesting.

Anyhow, this just seemed like a good moment to introduce myself. If you have specific thoughts or questions about the report or the http://www.petsfortheenvironment.org campaign, please let me know!
